an intersecting double frame; within the outer frame, a repeated<br />
foliage stamp; within the inner frame, ‘Maria hilf’ scrolls; see<br />
Schwenke^Schunke 291 no. 359 (‘Augsburg’). Title on the spine<br />
and across the fore-edge. Strips from a twelfth-century German<br />
liturgical manuscript visible in the binding. Size: 295 ¿ 210 ¿<br />

by diagonal quintuple ¢llets into lozenge-shaped and triangular<br />
compartments, with the same £oral stamp; on the lower cover,<br />
the inner rectangle is divided by quintuple ¢llets into eight triangular<br />
compartments, with the same £oral stamp. On the head and<br />
tail of the spine diagonal triple ¢llets form lozenge-shaped compartments,<br />
each with another small circular £oral stamp. Greenedged<br />
leaves. Rebacked. Size: 345 ¿ 243 ¿ 112 mm. Size of<br />
leaf: 335 ¿ 237 mm.<br />
Marginal annotation in an early hand on [f9 r ]: ‘# hanc glossam<br />
contra Iohannem Brecht’. Early numbering of the gatherings in<br />
the lower margin of the rectos.<br />
Four- to nine-line initials are supplied in red, or sometimes blue,<br />
with pen-work decoration extending into the margin. Paragraph<br />
marks are supplied in red; underlining of chapter headings and<br />
capital strokes in red.<br />
