SIU President Mike Sacco highlighted the progress thathas arisen recently from continuing cooperation withinthe American maritime labor movement. Sacco told thegroup that maritime labor was doing a good job of findingcommon ground and speaking with one voice to those inWashington who need to know the position of seagoingunions. “By taking a united approach,” Sacco said, “everyoneis on the same page and we are all more effective.”MEBA President Ron Davis, during his presentation tothe delegates, reaffirmed his commitment to cooperationwith MM&P, both in the political arena and in exploringareas in which the two unions can generate cost savingsynergies. He cited the recent move of the MEBA portoffice in Jacksonville into the building that houses MM&P’sJacksonville hall as an example of the kind of operations thatcan benefit both unions.Of the 22 resolutions submitted to the conventiondelegates for consideration, eight were adopted as written,eight were voted down, one was tabled and five were referredto either the Shipping Rules Committee, the OffshoreAdvisory Committee or the General Executive Board. Theresolutions that were adopted by the convention will bepublished in their entirety in the November–December 2006issue of The Master, Mate & Pilot.
