Organising and Selecting ResourcesThoughtfully arranged resources in an environment that is tidy, neat and beautifulencourage children to be respectful of their environment. Children develop apositive self concept when they are able to access the materials on their own. Asense of responsibility is also nurtured when they are given the opportunity to put thematerials back to where they have taken them from. When resources areneatly organised, children can accessthem and put themaway easily.A well-resourced environment with sufficient provisions for children encouragesthem to decide what and how they would like to explore and experiment withthe resources. Such resources should include the following types of games andmanipulatives:• Construction and manipulative toys such as wooden blocks and interlockingcubes/bricks which enable children to work together on a common project• Puzzles which encourage cooperation to complete the task• Board games which help children learn to take turns, enjoy winning and toaccept losing gracefully• Dressing-up games and playing with puppets which support children’slanguage and social development by encouraging them to communicatewith each other and express their feelings and ideasCopyright © 2013, Ministry of Education, Singapore 43
