Grigg.November, 1933:August Geinger has agreed to run a steam saw millthis winter at Bunker Hill on Fred Andersen's place.February, 1934:Dr. Elliott Dunn of Edmonton was in town this weeklooking for a location for his medical practice.December, 1934: The editor of the MayerthorpeTimes is now Mr. J.D. Skinner.March, 1935: Mayerthorpe makes further progress.John Fundak, an experienced harness and shoe maker,has opened here for business. His shop is just west ofthe new <strong>Community</strong> Hall. This is another indication ofimproving conditions here.The Mayerthorpe Merchant - Ed Van Den Linden,editor: - June, 1939. This is the first issue of the MayerthorpeMerchant and marks the beginning of a newfree service for the citizens of Mayerthorpe and district.It is sponsored by the Mayerthorpe Chamber of Commerce.The Mayerthorpe business men realize the needfor some medium to keep their customers familiar withthe changes in stock and current events in the town anddistrict. Hence we have the Mayerthorpe Merchant,which will be published the second and fourth week ofeach month. At least 800 copies will be distributed.June, 1939: A meeting was held on June 14th by theLocal of the U.F.A. to discuss the establishment of a Co-Operative Store in their town. The required number ofsignatures was secured and it is believed that an applicationfor a charter will be made shortly.June, 1939: The return bus fare to Edmonton is$2.70 - leaves at 7:00 a.m. and returns at 9:00 p.m.July, 1939: The long awaited hospital vote is overat last and fair minded residents of the <strong>com</strong>munity arerejoicing that at last steps have been taken to free thisdistrict from the ever present fear of sickness and accident.The Chamber of Commerce has undertaken toensure a first class surgeon and are already working onthat important selection.July, 1939: Now that the hospital vote is over wehope that the Chamber of Commerce will be able tospend more time on the subject of telephones. Mr. E.R.Keeley, who is the chairman of the Committee of Communicationsand Transport for the Chamber, has conductedmeetings at Balm, Deer Lodge, Belfast, ConnorCreek, and Hathersage and reports warm enthusiasm. Ifformed, all <strong>com</strong>panies will be Mutual Telephone Companiesowned by the subscribers. They will be connectedthrough central with lines of Alberta Government Telephoneswhich will enable you to make a long distancecall from your own home.September, 1939: For some still obscure reason, thepower plant did not get started quite on time Mondaymorning. However, the ladies who came to investigatesoon found the trouble and corrected it.September, 1939: Alterations are being made to thepump house in Mayerthorpe. A large door is being cutinto the west end of the building.
