Elizabeth Heitkamp from Ohio became<br />

interested in the agriculture communications<br />

field when she competed in<br />

the Agriculture Communications Career<br />

Development Event during her first two<br />

years as a member of the Versailles FFA<br />

Chapter in Ohio. She was able to put her<br />

practice to work when she became the<br />

afternoon farm news director at a local<br />

radio station, where she researches, writes<br />

and broadcasts news stories. In addition,<br />

she records the overnight weather<br />

report. Planning to attend The Ohio State<br />

University, she will continue to hone her<br />

communication skills to one day pursue a<br />

career in agriculture.<br />

As a high school freshman, Nicole<br />

Folger from Oklahoma stood before a<br />

group of fifth grade students and asked<br />

them where their food came from. Not<br />

satisfied with their responses, the Burlington<br />

FFA member decided it was her<br />

destiny to be an agriculture educator. To<br />

prepare for this future career, Folger has<br />

taken many steps to promote agriculture<br />

in her community. Taking an active role<br />

in her chapter’s Food For America and<br />

Partners in Active Learning Support programs,<br />

Folger is educating youth about<br />

agriculture and FFA. Sharing<br />

Kingsburg FFA member Andre Alves<br />

from California has gained knowledge<br />

and experience in agricultural mechanics<br />

through employment experiences<br />

provided to him by his FFA advisor. His<br />

first job was at Wildwood Express truck<br />

yard, where his duties included fabrication<br />

of equipment and trailers. He helped<br />

perform upgrades on big rig trucks. The<br />

following summer, Alves began working<br />

at Kingsburg Cultivator, a manufacturer<br />

of specialized farm equipment. There,<br />

he worked with installing hydraulic components<br />

on machinery. Through these<br />

employment experiences, the California<br />

student has gained a better understanding<br />

of agriculture and will someday<br />

pursue a career in agricultural business.<br />

Noah Sims from Alabama constructs<br />

and repairs ammonia absorption refrigeration<br />

systems with his grandfather,<br />

Eldred. These systems are primarily used<br />

in recreational vehicles. The Falkville FFA<br />

member began assisting in his grandfather’s<br />

business when he was a freshman<br />

in high school. In three short years, his<br />

responsibilities have grown from cleaning<br />

to welding and fabricating. In addition
