289289A COMPOSITE EUROPEAN CUIRASSIER'S ARMOUR,EARLY 17TH CENTURYcomprising later collar formed of a single plate front andrear, heavy one-piece breastplate, possibly Flemish, ofvestigial 'peascod' fashion decorated with three narrowbands of incised lines radiating from the waist, the latterlightly flanged and fitted with a heavy fauld of one lamefitted at either side with a modern brass bolt for a pair oflong tassets, possibly Flemish, each of thirteen lamesterminating in a winged poleyn of five lames, decorated onthe front of its third with an embossed six-pointed star,early 16th century backplate formed of a main plate, a pairof side-plates and a culet plate fitted at the centre of itswaist with a modern hook to receive a culet of five lames,the lower four are formed in two halves joined medially byrivets, a pair of pauldrons of five lames incorporating alarge pointed lower plate, vambraces of three lames, upperand lower cannons, poleyns of five lames with centralwinged plate with a recessed border, a pair of fingeredgauntlets (restorations and repairs): painted blackthroughout and with some recessed borders and incisedlinear ornamentStand not included£6000-8000112
290290A RARE ITALIAN VISOR FOR A BASCINET OR BARBUTA,CIRCA 1350of one-piece bulbous form for a T-shaped face opening,with near circular upper part pierced with a pair of flangedvision slots and narrowing to form a long slightly in-curvedlower ‘tongue’ with straight sides towards the base, thelower edge rounded, pierced with a series of circularbreathes on each side of a medial ridge, and fitted at thetop with an iron strap pierced with two slots for attachingto a pair of hooks on a helmet (chemically cleaned)26.8cm; 10I in high overallProvenance:Aroldi Collection, MilanR.T.
