162 (detail)64162162AN EXTREMELY RARE SOUTH GERMAN MILITARYBROADSWORD ‘KATZBALGER', SECOND QUARTER OFTHE 16TH CENTURYin excavated condition, with broad double-edged blade offlattened-diamond section strongly tapering at the point andcut with a near full length slender fuller on each face,rectangular ricasso, steel hilt comprising a pair of horizontallyrecurved quillons, each formed of a writhen bar issuant froma serpent’s head and with near spherical terminal almosttouching the root, moulded quillon block, tapering pommel offishtail form with pronounced medial ridge fluted en suitewith the quillons, and retaining its original burrwood grip78cm; 30N in bladeVery few swords of this distinctive form remain extant. Notableexamples include that of Ulrich von Schellenberg ImperialFeldOberst (circa 1487-1558), preserved in the KunthistorischesMuseum, Vienna (inv. nr. A287) and another, with hilt encasedin chased silver and possibly that of Duke Heinrich the Pius ofSaxony (1473-1541), preserved in the Historisches Museum,Dresden (Inv. 1567 S.110). 163 (detail)163A FINE AND RARE BROADSWORD, LAST QUARTER OFTHE 15TH CENTURY, PROBABLY VENETIANwith straight double-edged blade of pronounced flattenedsection, stamped with a series of small marks within a broadcentral fuller between a pair of slender fullers over the lowerthird on each side, steel hilt comprising rear quillon withflattened globular terminal formed with an additional barcurling along the plane of the blade, forward quillonextending at a right angle to form the knuckle-guard anddrawn-out at the base to form an additional loop-guard, theknuckle-guard of flattened section and cut with pairs ofdecorative notched lines, square pommel drawn-out oneach side to a raised central moulding, and wooden grip,perhaps the original (the steel parts with areas of patinationand light pitting, the grip with worm damage)92.8cm; 36I in bladeThe hilt is a variant form of Norman type 6. A large numberof similar swords are preserved in the <strong>Armour</strong>y of theDoges Palace, Venice, one such example is struck with thesame series of marks on the blade (inv. no. A300). Otherexamples are preserved in the Kunsthistorisches Museum,Vienna. A number of the swords in the Doges Palace areimpressed ‘CX’ on the grip for the Consiglio Dieci. TheCouncil of Ten was established in 1310 following a revoltand was intended as a temporary Government body.However, it became permanent in 1334 with powers thatincreased substantially and, a century later, it wasoverseeing the Republic’s diplomatic and intelligenceservices as well as managing its military affairs.
