KILLARNEY COMMUNITY CENTRE SOCIETY

A Message from the President of Killarney Community Centre Society

Killarney Community Centre Society (KCCS)

serves to enhance the Killarney Community

Mission Statement:

The Killarney Community Centre Society fosters community spirit and better quality of life by supporting

social, educational and physical activities for the whole community, with accessibility and fairness for all.

KCCS Governance:

The Killarney Board of Directors consists of a group of people elected at the Annual General Meeting of the Society.

It establishes policy and governs the organization in the most effective and efficient manner possible. The KCCS Board

of Directors makes and reviews policy, delegates action to committees and to staff. The Board has general charge and

control of the Community Centre programs, memberships, funds, equipment and assets. It is accountable to the

membership of the Society. Membership in the Society is open to the public.

From time to time, KCCS lobbies the various levels of government for improvements that enhance the safety and/or the

availability of facilities or programs for the community. The grants that we receive help us subsidize programs to

help keep registration costs down.

The relationship that the KCCS Board has with the Vancouver Park Board is set out in a Joint Operating Agreement.

This agreement divides responsibility for the activities in the Centre, the Rink, and the Pool.

Revenues and Expenditures:

The revenues raised by KCCS either through programs, government grants, Bingo grants, or private donations are

reinvested into the Killarney community in a number of ways such as: purchases of equipment, supplies, and in some cases

capital expenditures.

For more information on the Society or how to participate with the KCCS, please contact Frieda Trip at (604) 718-8210.

I remain yours sincerely,

Ainslie Kwan

President KCCS

Centre Information: 604·718·8200 A valid Killarney Community Centre Membership is required for all programs.

GORD HAUKA’S TENNIS PROGRAMS

Fall 2012 Tennis Lessons

“The Game For Life, Played For Fun”

We are bringing the summer tennis fun indoors for the fall season. Come and join our Children’s Indoor Tennis Lessons - the

most fun and the best teaching route to successful tennis for your kids. Over the course of 8 weeks, depending on the age

and skill level, all players will develop and improve their level of play through instruction and cooperative activities. All tennis

equipment are provided by the program. Tennis program is provided by Gord Hauka's Tennis.

BEGINNERS

Beginners are just that - never had a lesson or played before.

The player's skills are developed in a smaller play area - the

service box to ¾ court. Low compression, squishy balls are

used to develop their skills and confidence until the player

acquires the skill package to move to Novice play - such as

forehand and backhand ground strokes, volleys, and serve.

Games are short point scoring (first player to win 4 points).

Each player is a member of a team playing singles and

doubles. Fair play in a team environment is enforced in the

scoring and totals of all matches.

NOVICE

Novice players will have taken the Beginners lessons or have

met with one of the coaches and demonstrated the skills for

the level, the ability to rally 9 balls in a row using forehand

and backhand in the service box and 6 balls at 3/4 scale. The

play for Novice players is scaled to a size 3/4 of the regular

court. Players develop control at this distance and the skills

to manage a short set - serves, returns, ground strokes,

volleys, and scoring in singles and doubles play. Low

compression balls are used at the beginning moving to the

easy play ball as confidence, skills and positive play develop.

Team play and short games (first to 5 points), and short sets

(1 to 4 games) are used to familiarize players with tennis

while teaching the technical, fitness and personal skills

required to enjoy competitive play.
