Dear Friends and Colleagues of the AAGL, Welcome! As Scientific Program Chair, I welcome you to the 39th AAGL Global Congress of Minimally Invasive Gynecology in Las Vegas! During the past twelve months, the Scientific Program Committee, Board of Trustees and Special Interest groups have launched many innovative ideas and recommendations to make this year’s program truly sensational. Caesars Palace provides the perfect backdrop for our meeting. Placing the scaffolding, templates, and selections of surgical procedures that we felt our audience would enjoy was important. But the heroes of our meeting are our faculty and you. Our faculty were selected because they are recognized thought leaders and teachers. They will provide polished presentations with glimmering clincial pearls. Our coveted surgeons will demonstrate surgical finesse, explain surgical principles and will be riveted by the astute questions from the audience. You are critical because your questions will make us think, brainstorm new collaborative research projects and even influence industry to develop new tools. As I assumed my role as Scientific Program Chair, I did what Eleanor Roosevelt said, “do one thing every day that scares you.” My fear was fleeting. I embraced the need to go green and for the first time all didactic materials are available on a flash drive in your meeting packet. We were bold and savvy to try out new topics for this year. Can a surgical meeting like the AAGL handle female sexuality, menopause management, and hormone replacement therapy ? We gambled and believe that those who attend the Pre-Congress course will take home valuable clinical pearls. Vaginal surgery and ultrasound imaging at the AAGL meeting? Of course, because it will provide options for our patients and provide expert pre-operative assessment that improves or enchances surgical outcomes. Can we debate medical management for abnormal bleeding? Robotic surgery, single port, or straight stick laparoscopy for myriad gynecologic conditions, and incontinence topics are fully integrated into the program. Innovation and research, prized topics, will be presented in two full sessions. Certainly the topics of complications in endoscopy and basic pelvic anatomy can never be reviewed enough. So yes, they are still here on the program, with some of the most engaging lectures ever. Luncheon roundtables will include many veterans and new faces. As our surgical acumen increases, the need for expert suturing skills and retroperitoneal dissection emerges. We have several cadaver labs this year! We will stand shoulder to shoulder by our oncologists who contribute greatly to our meeting. Please let us know what you think about the new poster presentation format and Opening Ceremony. We have a few surprises too. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Michael Roizen is captivating. Please mark your electronic calendar to attend his entertaining lecture, “Doctor, Heal Thyself.” Take time to care for you. Attend the Women’s Breakfast (it’s not only for women) and celebrate the myriad milestones and accomplishments of the women in the AAGL across the globe. Recruiting the best women to the AAGL, retaining women in our organization and developing women leaders are pivotal to the success of this organization. Lessons learned during the breakfast meeting, will be helpful to nuture women residents/ fellows at your institution. Let us not forget the mighty dedicated AAGL staff who play a tremendous role in the execution of this masterful meeting. They are invested in our success. Phones are answered on the first ring with a smile in their voices. Thousands of emails are promptly answered. So we thank all of our AAGL staff who go beyond the call of duty, to make our meeting organized, memorable, and successful. I believe that the work of the 21 st century gynecologist is to provide the best medical and surgical care to women. Our organization, the AAGL, is galvanized to educate, train, and teach minimally invasive surgical skills to gynecologic surgeons. We are also patient advocates, believe in evidence-based medicine, and informed decision making. Most importantly, we are advocates for minimally invasive surgery. Our organization has always been energized by relationships between the generations, continents, and filled with mentors who are activists, movers and shakers. All that we do, all that we teach, all that we advocate for is in the spirit of improving the medical and surgical care to our gynecologic patients. Our work is not done. We have many more miles to go before we sleep. The tools necessary to improve the gynecologic life of our patients are all taught here at the AAGL annual meeting. We look forward to your participation and engagement in the many educational venues this year. Sincerely, Linda D.Bradley, M.D. AAGL Vice President Scientific Program Chair
