<strong>JOB</strong> <strong>DESCRIPTION</strong>Job Title:Reporting to:Location:Head of ClimbingCentre DirectorWestway Sports CentrePurpose of JobAs Head of Climbing, you will be responsible for managing the climbing centre. This includesresponsibility for the commercial success of the centre, the management of the climbingoperations and coaching teams, the sports development programme, the route settingprogramme, all aspects of health & safety, maintenance and external contractors.The list below outlines the principal duties and tasks related to this role. This is notintended to cover every responsibility since, by the nature of the role, the Head of Climbingwill be expected to take ownership of the areas of accountability below and to develop themin line with the needs of Westway Sports Centre and Westway Development Trust.Main Areas of Accountability:1 Responsible for the achievement of the budget for the climbing centre.2 Responsible for developing the sales ethos amongst the climbing team, ensuring thatthe team have the full product knowledge, sales skills, sales systems and up sellingability, to maximise sales opportunities and achieve sales/income targets.3 Control all operating costs and look to achieve cost savings wherever possible. Operatethe climbing centre within the trusts environmental policies.4 Development of new products and market launch.5 Line management for operations and coaching teams.6 Ensure all team members are trained to the appropriate standard.7 Responsible for managing the Deputy Manager, who is responsible for all aspects of theclimbing centres operations including safe working practices, health & safety systems,maintenance, cleaning and customer service.8 Ensure the route setting programme is a leading edge standard, delivered by theclimbing operations team.9 Work closely with the Project Manager on all facility developments and refurbishments.10 Develop the business plan, annual operational plan and budget. Ensure the operational& business plans are delivered.Page 1 of 7


11 Develop and implement a full programme of activities to cater for all climbing customerneeds.12 Promote excellence in the delivery of the coaching programme, ensure high performinginstructors are recruited and monitor instructor performance.13 Work positively in accordance with the Trust’s Equal <strong>Opportunities</strong> Policy14 Carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required.Page 2 of 7


PERSON SPECIFICATIONEssential qualifications, skills and abilities:1. Extensive experience of managing a leisure (or similar) business, with a proven trackrecord of commercial success.2. Proven success in developing sales & marketing programmes that have increasedparticipation and income.3. Experience of new product development.4. Robust financial experience, including management of large budgets, achievement ofcommercial income targets and cost control.5. Effective leadership skills and a successful track record of leading and managing adiverse team.6. Demonstrable ability to implement projects on time and to budget.7. Substantial experience in providing exceptional customer service.8. Relevant health & safety qualifications and ability to develop effective systems.9. Ability to ensure administrative excellence for the department.10. Effective oral and written communication skills.11. Team coaching and motivational skills.12. The ability to work as part of a team with a successful track record of leading a teamDesirable qualifications, skills and abilities (but not essential):1. Management qualification.2. MAIN TERMS AND CONDITIONS1 Salary:Starting salary £35,000 per annum. There is an annual cost of living review on 1st Aprilevery year.2 Performance Related bonus:You will be eligible to participate in whatever reward system is currently operating foryour post (currently bonuses may be awarded on 1 April each year after you have beenin post for at least one year).3 Hours:40 per week with additional hours as required by the duties of the role. Hours will be workedon a shift system and will include weekends.4 Holidays:25 days with pro rata entitlement in the first year which ends 31 st March.5 Training:The Trust encourages job related training and development and aims to provide thispredominantly through good line management support and in-house programmes.External resources are utilised when appropriate.6 Sick Pay:In addition to statutory sick pay the Trust operates its own occupational sick payscheme, over and above the statutory level, for staff that has been confirmed in post.7 Maternity, paternity and adoption benefit:We run an occupational maternity, paternity and adoption scheme for staff that havebeen with the Trust for 2 years. Statutory maternity, paternity and adoption rights applyfor staff with less than two years service.8 Pension:You will be entitled to join the Trust's contributory occupational pension scheme uponconfirmation in post.9 Probation:There will be a probationary period of 6 months.10 Notice Period:During the probationary period notice will be 4 weeks from you to the Trust and 1 weekfrom the Trust to you. After successfully completing the probationary period and up tocompletion of two years service, notice will be 4 weeks from you to the Trust and 4 weeksfrom the Trust to you. For each further year of completed service, an additional 1 weekswritten notice for each additional full year of completed service up to a maximum of 12weeks notice for 12 years service or more.Page 6 of 7
