Great minds,high honorsChamber to present Dr. Alain E. Kaloyeros, Nehme Frangiewith awards on March 10 at 110th Annual DinnerDr. Alain E. Kaloyeros, professor, senior vicepresident and CEO of the College ofNanoscale Science and Engineering of theUniversity at Albany, and Nehme Frangie,vice president of partnerships and operationsat Vicarious Visions, Inc., will receive theAlbany-Colonie Regional Chamber ofCommerce’s highest honors at its 110thAnnual Dinner on Wednesday, March 10 atthe Empire State Plaza Convention Center inAlbany.Dr. Kaloyeros will receive the EnvoySalute, which recognizes an individual whosevision, leadership and contributions havemade a positive and significant impact on theeconomic vitality of the region.Frangie will be presented the Arthur R.Kapner Spirit of the Chamber Award, whichis bestowed upon an individual whose dedicatedservice and efforts have brought credit tothe Chamber and enhanced the Chamber’sstanding in the community. The Spirit of theChamber Award is named in honor of ArthurR. Kapner, who died in June 2004 after fivedecades of volunteer service to the organization,including a stint as president of theChamber’s board of directors.“We are truly honored to recognize Dr.Kaloyeros and Nehme Frangie for their outstandingefforts toward serving, understandingand enhancing our community,” said KenDesmond, vice president of The DesmondHotel & Conference Center and 2010 chairof the Chamber’s board of directors. “Both ofthese individuals exemplify unparalleled leadershipand unwavering commitment. He has authored and co-authoredmore than 150 articles and contributed toeight books on topics pertaining to the scienceand technology of nanoelectronics and nanooptoelectronicsultrathin film materials, atomiclayer vapor phase deposition processes, andnanoscale xray, electron, and photon-basedcharacterization and metrology. He has graduated32 Ph.D.s and more than 50 Masters.Dr. Kaloyeros, who also serves as vice presidentand special advisor to the president forUniversity-wide Economic Innovation andOutreach at UAlbany, has been activelyinvolved in the development and implementationof New York’s high-tech strategy tobecome a global leader in the nanotechnologydriveneconomy of the 21st century.A critical cornerstone of New York’s hightechnology strategy is the establishment of theNanoCollege as a truly global resource forresearch and development (R&D), technologydeployment, education and commercializationfor the international nanoelectronics industry.“The NanoCollege has generated morethan $5 billion in public and private investmentsdue, in large part, to the tireless effortand global vision of Dr. Kaloyeros,” Desmondsaid. “Under his leadership, the NanoCollegehas grown to become an international centerfor nanotechnology education and innovation,and the institution has elevated the CapitalRegion, Tech Valley and New York State, as awhole, in terms of pioneering scientificresearch.”The NanoCollege’s unparalleled AlbanyNanoTech Complex houses major R&D centersinvolving corporate giants that include:IBM, AMD, GlobalFoundries, Toshiba,Tokyo Electron, Applied Materials, ASML,International SEMATECH, NovellusSystems, and Vistec Lithography, amongmany others.
