(Smeal), Snyder, NE -- $538,953.00. Followingdiscussion, Ell introduced a resolution to accept the proposal of Danko Emergency EquipmentCo./Smeal Fire Apparatus Co. at Snyder, Nebraska, for a new ladder truck (quintuple combinationpumper) for the West Point Fire Department in the amount of $538,953.00 and that the City of WestPoint and the West Point Rural Fire Protection District shall equally split said cost and each own aone-half interest in said vehicle. Seconded by Paus. Resolution adopted..The Council considered the request from the West Point Optimists for a reduced rate for useof one-fourth of the Nielsen Community Center for a clothing drive. Moved by Grovijohn,seconded by Smidt, to reduce the rate for the use of the Nielsen Community Center by the WestPoint Optimists on November 17 th & 18 th from $100.00 per day to $50.00 per day. Motion carried.Next the Council considered a request from Earl Boston for the City to waive the monthlyelectrical usage for entrance lights at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Earl Boston, representing the Mt. HopeCemetery Association, was present at the meeting and stated that at the east entrance of Mt. Hope
Cemetery a new entry way project is under construction and he would like to place two flood lightsat this entrance with the City waiving the charge of the usage of electricity for these lights. It wasstated that this is a private entity and that this is more about a policy decision than the monetaryissue. It was decided to review the matter in six to twelve months to actually see the lights and theelectrical usage.Bernie Hunke, Cuming County Veterans Service Office, appeared before the Councilrepresenting a Committee which has started the development of a Veterans Memorial to be placed inWest Point honoring Cuming County veterans. He stated that they have no figures yet as to thecosts but are looking for real estate to place the memorial and Earl Boston had drawn up a design togive the Council a general idea of what the project might look like. He suggested one place for thememorial could be the east parking lot of the Nielsen Community Center as the memorial would getmore exposure and walk by traffic. The size of the memorial depends on how much land is givenfor it. The present design is approximately 30 feet by 60 feet and the veterans or families of theveterans will be able to purchase a brass plaque listing the veteran’s name and information on itwhich will then be placed on the memorial. Mr. Hunke further stated that this memorial wasdiscussed with the veterans for the VFW and American Legion in Bancroft, Beemer, Wisner andWest Point and everyone showed support. He also stated that another community may give land forthe memorial. The Council was in support of the memorial but several Councilmembers were notsure if the east parking lot was the best location for it. It was decided to table the matter to take moretime to make a decision and asked the Committee to stake out the area in the parking lot to visualizethe size.Next the Council considered a request from St. Francis Memorial Hospital to install a 1,000gallon propane tank northeast of the hospital to provide interruptible service for the boilers/heatingsystem for the hospital and clinic. Lyle Hansen, Fire Chief, was present and stated that, with theplacement of this tank, it would provide the hospital with a good backup system in the eventsomething happens to the main gas line to the hospital.
