Dynanet
Dynanet, a flexible product family for primary
access networks forms the core of Nokia
narrowband access product range together with
Eksos N20 V5.2 access equipment, and network
management equipment. The Nokia solution
is cost effective and provides high flexibility
and high reliability in the access network.
Flexibility is one of Nokia’s Dynanet competitive
advantages in Nokia access product range.
Due to modular product architecture and
distributed power supplies node installations
are economical both in small and large
DM2/DM2+
DN2
DB2
configurations. The broad range of interface
units, VF, data and ISDN interface units
can be used in all Dynanet primary order
multiplexers. Nokia access products are
especially well suited for dedicated network
solutions - branching and the support of
many different digital and analog interfaces.
In networks that are changing over time
Dynanet offers easy and fast adaptation.
Dynacards permit this by adding new units
and taking unused interfaces into use. Only
those interfaces, which are needed, are
taken into use and unused interfaces
may be taken in use later when needed.
The high reliability of Dynanet is achieved
through a high level of integration, strict
design rules and careful component control.
The equipment mtbf values have been
increased and field reliability statistics show
actual reliability to be even higher than
the pre-calculated values. If, nevertheless,
a problem arises an effective real-time
supervision system and built-in diagnostic
features minimise the downtime.
Nokia DM2 performs the functions of dynamically controllable
primary multiplex equipment. DM2 has been designed for
multiplexing analogue speech and signalling as well as data
channels of different bit rates into a common 2 Mbit/s frame.
DM2 can be used as a traditional PCM mux in subscriber and
junction line networks, in corporate networks, as a one-way
branching equipment in rural or private networks, as a pre-ISDN
mux or for efficient data multiplexing. The heart of the equipment
is a MUX unit which is common to all channel and special units of
the DM2 system.
DN2 dynamic node equipment provides an efficient three-inone
node for network flexibility and reliability. Part of the Nokia
Dynanet family, it provides cross-connect functionality with
drop/insert and multiplexing capabilities, supporting up to
40 x 2 Mbit/s interfaces.
DN2 is highly reliable due to its modular and decentralised
design. The cross-connection functions are distributed.
Furthermore, most of the DN2 units can be duplicated, thus
the node can be configured flexibly to give the required level of
redundancy and reliability. DN2 fully supports the implementation
of loop and mesh networks.
Nokia DB2 performs branching equipment functions and can
be controlled dynamically. DB2 offers a wide range of different
branching and drop/insert functions. The DB2 branching equipment
forms a 2 Mbit/s bi-directional branch to a main line signal. The
branch and the main line signal have the same speed and frame
structure. Individual channels are connected through or branched
and the operation is completely digital.
The DB2 branching equipment consists of two plug-in units for
branching and a wide range of VF and data interface units for
dropping and inserting individual channels.
data channel. The equipment consists of control unit and
channel unit and it has its own cartridge.
TMS Adaptor, Smart Branching Unit and Supervisory Substation
are part of Nokia Transmission Management System, TMS.
TMS can be used to manage equipment involved in
telecommunications networks. TMS may be used to localize
network faults from the management centre down to the
level of at least one station, and in most cases, down to the
level of one plug-in unit or unit group.
Data IF units
Voice IF units
ISDN units
The Dynanet data interface units are designed to provide data
interfaces to the 2048 kbit/s transmission systems with the
Nokia Dynanet family of products. These products include
primary multiplexing, digital branching and digital cross-connect
equipment. Data Interface Units (DIU) provide flexibility in data
transmission arrangements. The data interface units can be
used in most Dynanet products and they can freely be used in
conjunction with VF- and ISDN-channel units. The data interface
cards cover the most frequently used interfaces to data terminals
and mainframes, i.e. V.35, V.11, V.24/V.28, X.21 and G.703.
Configuration and supervision of these data units can be done
locally or remotely with hand-held service terminals or the Nokia
Network Management System.
The Dynanet voice interface units are designed to provide voice
interfaces to the 2048 kbit/s transmission systems with the Nokia
Dynanet family of products. Subscriber interface units provide
subscriber access to the 2 Mbit/s transmission. The subscriber
interface units can be used in most Dynanet products and they can
freely be used in conjunction with VF- Data and ISDN-channel units.
Nokia ISDN interface cards provide the ability for carriers to offer
cost-efficient ISDN service. The range of cards offered by Nokia
includes 4-line ISDN-U 2B1Q card, and 4-line ISDN-S card. ISDN
offers two independent and digital 64 kbit/s voice/data channels
over a single copper line. It also allows multiple terminals with
sub-numbering and added intelligence. The key point with ISDN
is the affordability of the services.
The Nokia DF optical line equipment provides digital signal
transmission on optical fibres at bit rates of 2, 8 and 34 Mbit/s.
Transmitter options take advantage of the low dispersion and
attenuation in the 1300 nm wavelength region. A specially
designed receiver frontend facilitates a very high dynamic range.
In all hierarchy levels, full laser output power is accepted by the
receiver, so no optical attenuators are needed to build-out low
loss sections.
Nokia’s higher order digital multiplex equipment multiplexes four
tributary signals into the main system, and vice-versa. The digital
multiplex equipment is developed for ITU-T PDH hierarchy level
multiplexing and demultiplexing in different kind of networks,
for example junction networks, dedicated networks for railways,
gas, oil and power companies, corporate networks and networks
for connecting mobile radio base stations. Nokia’s higher order
multiplexing equipment can use any suitable transmission
medium, such as radio links and optical fiber systems.
The change-over equipment is to provide an alternative
transmission path in a case of a line failure. The protection is 1+1
all bit rates 2...34 Mbit/s and it is organized so that in the transmit
direction, the change-over equipment sends the signal to two
redundant transmission lines. In the receive direction, it selects
one of the two incoming signals. The selection is based on the
external control data received from the protected systems.
The change-over function can be controlled either automatically
or manually.

of services from medium bandwidth such
as Fast Internet access to emerging higher
D500 ETSI D500 ANSI
D500 RAM
miniDSLAM
bandwidth multimedia/entertainment
such as video on demand, digital broadcast
TV, and interactive TV. The D500 is designed
to provide operators with the ability to
evolve their networks from ATM to IP in
a seamless manner, as IP becomes the
prevalent protocol in the core, edge, and
access networks.
The Nokia D500 RAM (Remote Access Module) includes all the
benefits of the bigger D500 version in smaller physical size and
smaller capacity. The D500 RAM is is perfect for remote locations
with less subscribers in the area.
Wall mounting and different street cabinets are also possible
with D500 RAM installations.
Available in ETSI and ANSI standards.
• Multiservice platform
• Powerful and scalable
• Versatile
• Future proof
• Modular remote solutions
• Reliable
• Ease of implementation
The miniDSLAM solution is a part of the Nokia total product offerings
complementing the Nokia DSLAM product range. miniDSLAM is
designed to meet the requirements for smaller sites. The compact
assembly enables easy deployment of DSL services in the smaller sites
like, Outdoor Cabinets, Indoor Cabinets, Small Exchanges on remote
low density areas as well as FTTC (Fiber to the curb) applications.
With miniDSLAM solution operators can effectively extend the reach
of DSL by moving the DSL interface closer to the end user. Shorter
loop lengths increase signal strength and access speed at the customer
CPE interface. This is essential with new high bandwidth services
provided with ADSL2+ technology especially.
The miniDSLAM solution comprises a Master unit and Slave units
both supporting 24 ADSL2+ ports. Master unit has one optical
GigE interface for trunking and it serves as an aggregation device
for up to six slave units, the maximum configuration serves 168
ADSL2+ lines including splitters.
RedBack
Redback products are focussed on three main
functionalities as follows: BRAS, Edge Router
and Ethernet aggregation. Operators may use
the same equipment for many different
purposes including termination of DSL
connections, deployment of VOIP, VoD and
offering MPLS/VPN L2/L3 services with
sophisticated QoS features for business
customers. There are several interface
types available for network connection.
The SmartEdge TM 800
30
Broadband Access
The SmartEdge TM 800
Router is targeted at IP dedicated access services, as well as hosting
and network based storage sites and backbone core applications.
The product is distinguished by a number of features for providers
focused on delivering highly available IP services today, and
having total flexibility to support new IP services in the future.
Software modularity and process restartability
The SmartEdge OS is highly modular to improve system reliability.
Every protocol such as PPP, SNMP, BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, and RIP is implemented
as a separate process. The Routing Information Base (RIB) and
configuration UI are also separate processes. Failure of one process
has no impact on any other process. For example, if a network
event crashes BGP process it does not affect any other protocols
and does not cause a system crash. If any process fails, it can
simply be restarted without affecting any other process.
High-performance switching and programmable forwarding
The SmartEdge 800 platform employs a very high-performance
packet mesh, whereby every card is interconnected to every other
card. The packet mesh has 160 Gbps of switching capacity and is built
with ASICs developed by Redback. All of the packet forwarding
functions in the SmartEdge 800 are implemented with Redback’s
specialized network processors, called Packet Processing ASICs (PPA).
The SmartEdge 800 platform uses a dedicated PPA on every line card
for input packet processing and another dedicated PPA on every
line card for outgoing packet processing. With dedicated packet
processors for incoming and outgoing traffic, the SmartEdge 800
platform can support high-performance forwarding, with a rich set
of packet processing features (ACLs, rate limiting, etc.) turned on,
both on the access side (toward the customer) and the backbone
side. Since PPA is fully programmable, new services can be introduced
simply by reprogramming them with right software code. Thus,
PPAs offer investments protection along with ability to add new
functionality with virtually no hardware swap.
Distributed forwarding
Forwarding functions on the SmartEdge 800 platform are distributed
on every line card and handled by the PPA. A failure of one line card
has no impact whatsoever on packet forwarding for any other line card.
Thus, there is no central point of failure for packet forwarding,
even for specialized packet types.
Chassis:
The SmartEdge 800 chassis has 14 slots with 2 slots dedicated
to the controller cards and 12 slots available for a flexible
combination of traffic cards. A separate area of the chassis has
fans for forced-air cooling. The SmartEdge 800 chassis is designed
for mounting in a standard 19- or 23-inch rack. All cards are
installed at the front of the chassis. With the exception of the DS-3
and E3 traffic cards, the cards have port connectors on their front
panels. Connectors for the DS-3 and E3 cards that are installed in
slots 1 to 5 and 10 to 14 are located at the rear of the chassis.
The SmartEdge TM 400
Available Interface
The SmartEdge TM 400
The SmartEdge 400 router is a carrier-class product with an
architecture that supports packetized traffic. The SmartEdge 400
router can be used as an edge aggregation router to directly
connect customers to the network and supports a variety of
interfaces and vital services, such as quality of service (QoS) and
inbound and outbound access control lists (ACLs). New services
can easily be added with software upgrades. Because of the
optimized packet forwarding capabilities and support of highbandwidth
uplink interfaces, the SmartEdge 400 router can also
be used in the metropolitan core to aggregate traffic from other
routers into the long-haul transit core.
The SmartEdge 400 chassis has six slots with two slots dedicated
to the controller cards and four slots available for a flexible
combination of traffic cards. A separate area of the chassis has
fans for forced-air cooling. The SmartEdge 400 chassis is designed
for mounting in a standard 19- or 23-inch rack. All cards are
installed at the front of the chassis. With the exception of the DS-3
and E3 traffic cards, the cards have their port connectors on their
Broadband Access
The Gigabit Ethernet 3 (GE3) card is the third version of the 4-port
Gigabit Ethernet card. It is designed for traffic management, with
the second generation of the PPAs, each of which supports 1 GB
of memory and can process data internally at a much higher
rate than the PPAs on the first and second versions of the Gigabit
Ethernet card.
The GE3 card provides four optical Ethernet ports; a low-density
version of the card provides two ports that are enabled through
software entitlement. Any combination of the following types
of small form-factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceivers are
supported on any port on the card.
The Gigabit Ethernet 1020 (GE1020) card is designed for traffic
management, with the second generation of the PPAs, each of
which supports 1 GB of memory and can process data internally
to match the line rate of the ports. This version of the GE1020 card
provides 20 optical ports, each of which runs at 1.25 Gbps. Any of
the following types of small form-factor pluggable (SFP) optical
transceivers are supported on any of the ports.
The 10-Gbps Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) card is designed for traffic
management, with the second generation of the PPAs, each of
which supports 1 GB of memory and can process data internally
to match the line rate of the port, which runs at 10 Gbps. Either of
the following types of 10-Gbps small form-factor pluggable (XFP)
transceivers are supported on the port:
• 10GBase-SR or 10GBase-SW
(10GBase-S)
• 10GBase-LR or 10GBase-LW
(10GBase-L)

of their network operation life cycle. Nokia
will support the End-User via the Value Added
Reseller through the phases of building and
expanding the network, efficiently operating
the network, through the recycling of equipment
taken out of use, so that the End-User can
focus focus f on their strategic business performance.
As a leading company in the industry, Nokia
also strives to be a leader in environmental
performance. Nokia is running environmental
programs, which have a direct impact to Nokia’s
Development & Enhancement. Environmental
aspects are highly prioritised throughout
the whole process. If equipment reaches
its end of life, Nokia offers Take back and
Recycling services. An Individual Service
Portfolio suitable for the specific needs
of the End-User can be designed.
As soon as Care & Software Release Service
(Nokia’s basic support package) has been
set up, the End-User can have access to Nokia
on-line support tools. The Value Added Reseller
is granted access to the support functions of
Nokia Care Management, Technical Assistance
Center (TAC) and reporting throughout all
phases of the network operations. This
enables the Value Added Reseller to act
as the sole interface to the End-User.
Care Management, Technical Assistance
Center and Nokia on-line support tools
provide the Value Added Reseller with the
assistance needed to solve both urgent
and non-urgent requests that may occur
in the daily operations of the network.
TAC remote support from expert support
engineers (via telephone, e-mail or web)
is available during normal working hours
and 24 hours a day for some products
(mainly broadband products). These
services are available for the Value Added
Reseller and the End-User from the
very start or expansion of the network
operation throughout all phases of the
life cycle of the network. Care meetings
between the Value Added Reseller and
Nokia and Reporting including case
statistics are an essential part of Nokia’s
support offering to secure service quality
and high Customer satisfaction.
