A unique environment and an<strong>in</strong>novative approach to promote<strong>in</strong>teraction and knowledge shar<strong>in</strong>g.Career opportunitiesThe programme is designed for students who wish toprepare for careers related to <strong>Mathematics</strong>. It enablesthese students to acquire expertise and pr<strong>of</strong>essionalqualification• to work <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>ancial sector• to work <strong>in</strong> other private or public sector companies• to become pr<strong>of</strong>essors <strong>in</strong> secondary e<strong>du</strong>cation• to work <strong>in</strong> public research and higher e<strong>du</strong>cationDue to attractive options and specialisations, e.g. <strong>in</strong><strong>Mathematics</strong> E<strong>du</strong>cation or <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>Mathematics</strong>,along with the practical orientation <strong>of</strong> the programme(<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>du</strong>strial cooperation and <strong>in</strong>ternships <strong>in</strong>secondary schools, banks or companies <strong>in</strong> <strong>Luxembourg</strong>),gra<strong>du</strong>ates are well-prepared for a diversified job-market.For students with the career goal <strong>of</strong> a secondary schoolpr<strong>of</strong>essor, the master’s programme <strong>of</strong>fers (togetherwith a bachelor’s degree) the required 5-year academice<strong>du</strong>cation.Study<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Luxembourg</strong>Course programmeThe <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Luxembourg</strong>, founded <strong>in</strong> 2003, <strong>of</strong>fersan <strong>in</strong>spir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternational multil<strong>in</strong>gual learn<strong>in</strong>genvironment with <strong>in</strong>novative course formats and a highdegree <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>teraction <strong>du</strong>e to small student groups. As <strong>Luxembourg</strong> is one <strong>of</strong> the most important f<strong>in</strong>anceplaces <strong>of</strong> Europe with <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g needs <strong>of</strong> highlyqualified staff, the <strong>Master</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mathematics</strong> with theoption <strong>of</strong> Mathematical F<strong>in</strong>ance <strong>of</strong>fered by the<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Luxembourg</strong> is unique <strong>in</strong> this respect.Students can make their <strong>in</strong>ternship and <strong>Master</strong>’s thesis<strong>in</strong> close cooperation with <strong>Luxembourg</strong>’s f<strong>in</strong>ancial<strong>in</strong>stitutions.Due to close contacts <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Mathematics</strong> ResearchUnit with the secondary e<strong>du</strong>cation school system <strong>in</strong><strong>Luxembourg</strong>, study<strong>in</strong>g at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Luxembourg</strong>has considerable advantages for prospective teachers.Special courses <strong>in</strong> Applied Didactics <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mathematics</strong>(partially given by practitioners) and <strong>in</strong>ternships <strong>in</strong>secondary schools <strong>in</strong> <strong>Luxembourg</strong> City, aim at coach<strong>in</strong>gstudents for the entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ation on the biennialpractical work placement. The first year <strong>of</strong> the curriculum concentrates on deepen<strong>in</strong>g the mathematical skills. The second year allows aspecialisation <strong>in</strong> different options:• General <strong>Mathematics</strong>This study track focuses on new techniques andconcepts <strong>of</strong> Pure and Applied <strong>Mathematics</strong>. Itprovides a high level <strong>of</strong> mathematical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g andfacilitates access to a broad spectrum <strong>of</strong> careers <strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong><strong>du</strong>stry, e<strong>du</strong>cation, and research. This direction isalso <strong>in</strong>tended for prospective secondary schoolpr<strong>of</strong>essors. It supplies these students (via optionalactivities) with a solid theoretical and practicalbackground <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mathematics</strong> and <strong>Mathematics</strong>E<strong>du</strong>cation.• F<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>Mathematics</strong>This option <strong>in</strong>tends to prepare students withmathematical skills for a wide range <strong>of</strong> careeropportunities <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>in</strong><strong>du</strong>stry. Specialemphasis lies on modern stochastic methods used <strong>in</strong>areas such as f<strong>in</strong>ancial modell<strong>in</strong>g, derivatives pric<strong>in</strong>g,hedg<strong>in</strong>g, risk management, stochastic optimisationand control.6 7
