STATUS OF CATFISH FARMING AND RESEARCH IN GHANA 31increased producti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> African catfishClarias gariepinus, which is sec<strong>on</strong>d in order<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> importance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fish species cultured inGhana. To achieve this, it is recommendedthat <strong>the</strong> following measures should betaken:• Genetic characterizati<strong>on</strong> anddocumentati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> local strains <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>Clarias gariepinus in Ghana;• Evaluati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> performance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong>local strains in a number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> producti<strong>on</strong>systems;• Establishment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a breeding and selecti<strong>on</strong>program to improve <strong>the</strong> growth rate <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>the</strong> species;• Establishment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nucleus centers andregi<strong>on</strong>al hatcheries for distributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>high quality catfish brood stock andfingerlings to farmers;• <strong>Development</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> high quality feed that willsustain <strong>the</strong> aquaculture industry andmake it viable;• Training <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> various levels <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> humanresources to sustain <strong>the</strong> industry. Thisshould include researchers, extensi<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficers and fish farmers;• Streng<strong>the</strong>ning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fish farmers’associati<strong>on</strong>s at local, district, regi<strong>on</strong>aland nati<strong>on</strong>al levels for sustainedec<strong>on</strong>omic growth; and• Provisi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sustainable credit facilities t<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>armers to initiate and/or expandaquaculture operati<strong>on</strong>s.CONCLUSIONThere is a very high potential for aquacultureproducti<strong>on</strong> in Ghana to rapidly expandthrough <strong>the</strong> culture <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> African catfishClarias gariepinus. The climate andgeographical c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s, especially in <strong>the</strong>sou<strong>the</strong>rn porti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> country, favorincreased producti<strong>on</strong>. The government <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>Ghana has taken several positive measuresto support and accelerate <strong>the</strong> growth <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>aquaculture through <strong>the</strong> implementati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>various strategies that have been outlinedin <strong>the</strong> strategic framework for aquaculturedevelopment in <strong>the</strong> country. With carefulplanning and cooperati<strong>on</strong> from all playerswithin <strong>the</strong> sector, aquaculture would be ableto c<strong>on</strong>tribute its quota to uplift <strong>the</strong> ec<strong>on</strong>omythrough <strong>the</strong> alleviati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> poverty andprovisi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> assured food security.REFERENCESAbban, E.K. 2005.
