11 sales talksunday 2 march 2014 ANZSALES TALKInglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale“The 2014 Australian sales season has started in very positivefashion and there seems to be genuine optimism that that cancarry on through this sale, particularly given it’s hugely progressiveprofile over the last number of years.“There looks set to be a strong buying bench at the sale andour draft appears to have been very well received on the evidenceof early inspections. High Chaparral continues to prove himself aworld-class sire, so it’s predictable that a colt like Lot 210 [ex BeatThe Bullet] would prove popular. That same stallion looks set fora big Autumn with his fillies, including the likes of Forever Loved,Veloce Forte, Vaquera and Soubrettes, who all have credentials tomake a big impression in Group One company, so with that in mind,a good filly like Lot 32 [ex Aliceinwonderland] is sure to appeal to awide variety of buyers.”Shane McGrath - CoolmoreAustralia Bloodstock Sales Manager“Inspection levels have been strong over the past three days - itis probably fair to say we have been busier than last year howeverwe have double the draft.“We think that we have an even, quality offering for differentlevels of buyers so viewings have been well distributed. Clearly aswe draw closer to sale time, prospectively interested parties whittledown the options so we’ll get a clearer idea of the favourites. The 2014 Premier catalogue has plenty of quality on paperand well grown horses with good conformation should attractcompetition in the Ring tomorrow. [Sunday]”Cathy Hains, Burnewang North“I think the sale overall is quite good. I think in general thereseem to be better colts on the ground than fillies. Melbourne isalways a sale that sells a racehorse and not the sizzle!“I thought that Arrowfield has the best draft down here inMelbourne that they have ever brought.“I was highly impressed by the Equianos in the northernhemisphere and the southern crop are not letting us down either.”Troy corstens, Malua Racing“By and large the vendors have presented their horses very welland the quality seems to be quite comparable to previous years. Westarted our inspections on Tuesday and now have a very diverse bidlist of 49 yearlings, represented by stock by 30 different stallions.“We have a couple of favourites that we expect will be amongthe sale toppers however the majority of the horses on our list willbe in the middle market and we are hoping to find some diamondsin the rough.“Aside from the obvious leading stallions - Fastnet Rock,Redoutes Choice, Snitzel, Exceed and Excel etc - is difficult to pindown a particular stallion that will be popular but the lucrative VobisGold scheme makes the Vobis qualified horses are particularlyattractive. In saying that, we have seen several good types byformer Champion Sire Encosta De Lago who is enjoying a very goodpatch at the moment with recent Group One winners Puccini, CostaViva and the exciting two-year-old, Rubick.“The Magic Millions Gold Coast and Sydney Classic sales were bothstrong, so we expect the market to continue being very competitive.Jason Timperley, David hayes racing“Inspections have been great, Inglis has done a good job inattracting a large group of buyers fom Australia and abroad anddeserve credit. The staff have been kept busy showing our wellbalanced draft.“Some of our best lots include Lot 162, Bernardini - Doojahcolt, Lot 102 Al Maher - Chauncy Lane colt and a horse that will gounder the radar is Lot 662 Artie Schiller - Divine Rubi.”Bryan Carlson, Emirates Park“There has been a mix of quality but there are certainly someexciting yearlings that we are hoping to secure. It’s been a greatsale for us in previous years with the likes of Hot Snitzel, FlyingSnitzel etc and this year looks to be no different.“Following on from the earlier sales this year, I think the middlemarket will have plenty of depth and this will most likely flow through toa good clearance rate. There seems to be a number of the internationalbuyers here which will only mean further depth of buyers.“I think the popular stallions will be the usual suspects againlike Fastnet Rock, Northern Meteor, Redoute’s Choice, Snitzel andyoung gun I Am Invincible.”Chris Ward - Triple Crown“Inspections have been constant today [Saturday]. The Not ASingle Doubt - Dowry colt, Charge Forward - Wild Orange colt and allsix of our yearlings by Redoute’s Choice have been popular.“The middle market has been strong so far this year, andMelbourne Sale buyers have had a lot of success with Arrowfieldyearlings in recent years, so we look forward to achieving solidresults in the next few days.”Sam FAIRGRAY - Arrowfield StudOperations Manager“Inspections have been strong again today [Saturday]. Thehorses are spending more time out of their boxes then in whichis obviously a good sign. I’m really encouraged by the positivefeedback that we are getting about the quality of our colts so amlooking forward to the sale getting underway.”Gerard Jones, Stud ManagerADVERTISING alice@anzbloodstocknews.comEDITORIAL editor@anzbloodstocknews.com

Vobis Gold has taken Vobis to another leveland long may it continue.“There is no doubt that you get a premium for nicely conformedand well-bred Vobis yearlings at any sale. Its madness for a Victorianowner or trainer not to be vobis with $20,000,000 annually up forgrabs. Robbie Griffiths takes the greatest advantage and has beenVobis leading trainers for years.”Lot 480 Wanted - Princess PulseHow many yearlings do you have in your 2014 draftand how does that compare to last year?inglis“We have a draft of 25 yearlings this year, which is about thesame as last year.”Which is your stand out colt and which is your stand outfilly?“Our best colt is Lot 480 , by Wanted and out of Princess Pulse.Out of a Group Three Winner and very much in the mould of a FastnetRock, he has a great brain, movement and presence.“Of the fillies, Lot 144, by Denman, out of Dazzerdame. Sheis our best mover and will find a lovely home. All scored well in therecent George Smith Medal (awarded to best overall voted yearlingsby our 150 guests at our yearling parade).Have you targeted the Blue Ribband section of the saleand if so, how many do you have in this session? If not,is it something you may look to take advantage of in thefuture?“The Blue Ribband is a fantastic concept and we certainly target theselect session of the sale, however its difficult to get yearlings in to behonest. Lot 209, by Lonhro, out of Bashful Girl (a Group Three Winner),is our sole entry but he will carry the flag pretty well for the team.”Which of the first season sires do you think will bepopular at this year’s sale and why?“Sons of Fastnet Rock are the future in our opinion, so Hinchbrook,Stryker and Rothesay are the ones to follow. We obviously standStryker and happily admit that we are biased towards him, howeverthe Gold Coast figures speak for themselves and showed us that themarket really believes in Styker’s stock.“A really nice filly sold to Gai Waterhouse for $200,000 and alovely colt sold to Gerald Ryan for $220,000. Fastnet Rock is theking, so commercially it makes sense to follow the cycle with all hissons at stud.”Which Victorian-based sire do you think will be popularat this year’s sale and why?“Victoria has some terrific valued sires and I am sure that theyall will be well represented at the Premier sale but to me the mostimportant aspect of the premier sale and most sales for that matteris “type”.“You can have the best page with no type and you will battle atany sale. So most buyers coming to Melbourne are aware that if theyfind a horse that they like that its most likely affordable and has everychance of succeeding on the racetrack.”What is your favourite restaurant in Melbourne andwhat would you recommend ordering?“Jack’s Satay Bar in Moonee Ponds is our favourite restaurantand the location for our annual staff dinner. We recommend letting‘Jack’ order for you, he always gets it right.”How have you found the introduction of the SuperVOBIS Gold scheme and what impact do you expect it tohave on this year’s sale?“Super VOBIS and Vobis Gold are the envy of every other racingstate in Australia and is one of the most exciting incentive schemethroughout the world.ADVERTISING alice@anzbloodstocknews.comEDITORIAL editor@anzbloodstocknews.com

He was then able to steady topace (first 1000m 61.53) before pinching a break approaching the300m. He then sprinted quickly and fought back gamely to scorehis second Group One victory by a length at the post. Criterionwas back in eighth place to 600m. He got into the clear passingthe 300m and made up good ground for a late-closing second, being disadvantaged a moderate early tempo. Thunder Fantasywas also disadvantaged by the pace and came from tenth at theturn for an eye-catching third. Eurozone ($4.50) raced outsidethe leader and eventual winner Shamus Award. He challengedthat horse at the 200m and briefly looked dangerous but wiltedover the closing stages for fourth beaten one and three quarterlengths. A post race veterinary examination found Eurozone tobe mildly lame in the near fore. Teronado was near last to the600m, fanned wide at the 300m and made good ground for fifth, putting up a smart performance. Surge Ahead was a handy thirdon the rails, after starting from the inside barrier and held onquite well for sixth with little running room late. Prince Haradawas handy all the way and held on for seventh, while the favouriteHucklebuck ($3.75) was wide early and then eased to settle intenth place, racing a bit keenly. He was shuffled back to near lastat the turn, got into the clear at the 400m and ran on fairly wellfor eighth beaten just over two and a half lengths, without everlooking a winning prospect. Co-leader from the 900m, Pucciniupped the ante turning for home, put a three length buffer on hisrivals to the 200m and won with plenty in hand. As she had donea fortnight earlier, Rising Romance was the one to offer the mostcompetition to Puccini. Settling one place ahead of the eventualwinner, Rising Romance was twelfth as Puccini commenced hismove, and although working off the rail at the 800m she wasstanding Puccini a big start. Pushed very wide on straightening,Rising Romance staged a massive finish to finish clearly insecond but could not peg back the winner. The maiden filly Press Report, having only her second start, was a handy third on the rails tothe turn and battled on surprisingly well along the rails to takesecond, putting up a most encouraging effort. Risen From Doubtwas fourth one out and one back to the 600m. He moved up onturning for home and kept battling on fairly well in the straight forthird. He should be improved by the run, his first the Sydney wayof going and and since his impressive debut win at Flemington inOctober. Jim Cassidy settled himoutside the leader (Romantic Touch), travelling at an average pace(first 800m 48.88). He challenged at the 300m and then keptbattling on well with Cassidy lifting him in the closing stages towin by a head. The NZ colt Atlante made a good Australian debuton the Slow7 track especially considering that he is suspect inwet conditions. He was third on the rails and was under ridingby Glyn Schofield nearing the turn. But he kept responding andchallenged at the 200m and then battled gamely for second. Heshould be improved by this first-up run and looks set for a goodpreparation. Savvy Nature was back in fifth place on the railsmost of the way to the turn. He switched between runners onstraightening and kept making ground for a most pleasing firstupthird, beaten a length and a half. Woodbine ($3.40 fav) wastrapped deep in the early stages and eased to settle back insixth place, one off the rails following a moderate tempo. Heswitched wide nearing the 300m and made ground late, in thesprint home, for fourth, beaten a length and three quarters. Themaiden Swiggin’ ($81) was second last in the eight-horse field tothe 600m.
