What I learned at Gibault…
I learned to forgive people
who have hurt me. I have
also learned to forgive myself.
I learned people do want
to help me and the staff at
Gibault care about me. Life
is better when you are honest
with yourself. You don’t have
to hide who you are or lie
about what you have done.
Having people who care about
me has given me a chance to
fi x my life. I am thankful for
Gibault and everyone here
who has helped me. Most
importantly I have learned I
am a good person and that my
life is awesome.
Gibault Children’s Services
Providing life-changing opportunities for children, families and communities.
Each year Gibault helps many students achieve their potential
and learn new skills to improve their lives. Each student’s
individual journey at Gibault is unique. A child’s time is often
diffi cult as they struggle to open up and learn to accept healthy
ways of conducting themselves. This struggle gives way to
excitement as the child grows and moves through the program.
When a child accomplishes their goals at Gibault they often
return home or to other caring environments. When a student
leaves Gibault we can all stand a little taller knowing we have
made a difference for that child.
Today I encourage you to look at the impact one child can have on their community.
When a child goes back and can better interact with their family, a home is enhanced.
When a teacher can work with each of their students and not have to focus on negative
behaviors of one student, a classroom is enhanced. When a child can walk away from a bad
situation…a community is enhanced.
When a child achieves, we all succeed. These children grow up and the direction in which
they take their lives can be infl uenced by our actions today.
Thank you to each and every donor, advocate and friend of Gibault who has contributed
their time, talent and fi nancial gifts to help us change the world…one child at a time.
Sincerely,
Jim Sinclair
Why I
care
www.gibault.org
Going to the Knights of Columbus meeting and the State
Convention, I really didn’t know what Gibault was all about, but the
year I became Grand Knight, our Council had a bus trip to Gibault.
After seeing the campus and the work of the counselors, as well as
meeting some of the kids, I was inspired to become a part of this
organization.
Envoy Charlie Castleman, Evansville
When I joined the Knights of Columbus on April 26, 1976; I knew I was going
to get involved with this organization.
It took many years before I was actively asked to get involved but not before I transferred
from Jasper, IN Council #1584. From there we started a new council in Santa Claus, IN April
2004; Holy Trinity Council #13504 where I became the charter treasurer.
I have always been involved with raising funds for other organizations and when I was asked
to become the Gibault Envoy, 2005-2010 for Holy Trinity Council #13504 I graciously said yes
to the request. I have been actively engaged with my duties as Envoy and came to appreciate
what Gibault does when I took the Gibault tour in April 2007. That tour given by Patty
Stiegelbauer totally convinced me to stay involved with the Knights of Columbus and fund
raising for Gibault.
I consider it a privilege to be the Gibault Envoy for Holy Trinity Council #13504 and expect to
stay in this position for many years to come. I have even recruited many of our Knights to be
engaged in Raffl e Ticket Sales for Gibault.
Envoy Bob Seger, Santa Claus
I have only been a Gibault Envoy for the past year. I’m still learning about
the entire mission of the work done at Gibault. My wife and I were excited about how our
collection of Christmas gifts turned out this past year. We invited our religious education
students to help with this program. We unfortunately could not make it down for the
Christmas party as planned but were glad to hear the kids really enjoyed the gifts.
As a Knight I have taken an oath to perform acts of charity for those who need my help. I
guess that is the main reason I want to help the kids at Gibault. I was blessed with a good
home and upbringing. If I can play even a small part in making a difference in one of the
students at Gibault then I’ve been successful. This help is the root to the teaching of Jesus
Christ “What so ever you do to the least of my brother, that you have done unto me.”
Envoy Ken Bloom, Fort Wayne
For You…
...and the kids we serve!
By providing Gibault with a Charitable Gift Annuity you
help ensure the future of our mission to provide life-changing
opportunities to the kids we serve.
Charitable Gift Annuities are simple! You make a fi nancial
contribution to Gibault of $5,000 or more and we agree to
pay you back a percentage of that gift for the rest of your
life!
Example: If you are 70-years old and you contribute $10,000
to a Charitable Gift Annuity for Gibault you would receive a
6.5% ($650) return on your money for the rest of your life!
The income is partially tax-free and you can also receive a
tax-deduction for your gift!
On the way to success!
In the short time I have been at Gibault I have watched several children
succeed. The defi nition of “succeed” for some of these children might be just
learning how to communicate with others in a positive way, developing their
social skills, learning how to perform everyday tasks, going to school on a
regular basis and being able to acquire enough credits to graduate high school.
Just recently Jake graduated from our Holy Cross High School. This is a big
success for him, all the hard work and dedication he put forth has helped him
reach his goal.
Upon his arrival, Jake was lacking in communication skills, he had behavioral
diffi culties and was unable to respect personal boundaries of peers and staff.
With the help and hard work of Gibault’s staff, Jake learned to be respectful of
others and to communicate well with his peers and staff. He is very caring and
is always willing to help someone. While at Gibault Jake enjoyed helping others,
decorating the bulletin boards in school and art class.
This is truly a success and Jake has a big future ahead of him.
Gibault Shelbyville Group Homes
Louisville Slugger Museum Outing
No matter who you are, all of us have heard the term “Louisville Slugger.” On
December 30, 2009, a few of the Shelbyville Group Home clients were privileged
to get an in depth look at where that term originated and the impact it has
had on the rich history of America’s favorite pastime—baseball. While driving
through downtown Louisville, a child excitedly remarked “this is the closest
I have ever been to a skyscraper.” Once arriving, we witnessed the world’s
largest bat; inside we went on an excellent tour of the bat making process, from
chopping down the tree to the crack of the bat on game day. The kids were
allowed to hold bats that were used by the “Greats,” experience the thrill of
trying to hit a 95mph fast ball, as well as using
the interactive displays. To cap it off, at the end
of the tour each person was given their own mini Louisville Slugger. The
kids truly enjoyed the outing and it was very educational and enlightening
to us all.—Mylon Albright, YTW
That’s how I give!
Gibault is blessed to have the support of our donors and friends. Each and every
contribution to Gibault makes a difference for the kids we serve.
Making a contribution to Gibault can take place in many forms.
As a contributor to Gibault, I make my donations through payroll deduction. This
giving option allows me to make a strong gift over a longer period of time. I could
not afford to write a large check at any one time. However, being able to make
smaller donations over time helps me to support Gibault the way I would like to.
I admire Gibault and the work they do for kids. I recently authorized Gibault to
withdraw a set donation directly from my checking account. This process was easy to
set up and I chose the date the transaction would occur. This has been a great giving
option for me because I can save a check and I don’t have to remember. This option
allows me to provide my gift over a longer period of time and not have an effect on
my daily expenses.
A few years ago, I made Gibault the benefi ciary of a Knights of Columbus life insurance policy. This policy
will one day allow me to provide Gibault with an extraordinary gift. Today, I make monthly donations to
Gibault to cover the cost of my annual premium for the life-insurance policy. Gibault does great work for
kids and I am proud to help.
Dear Friends,
As the Chairman of the Gibault Board of Trustees I have been able to witness
fi rst hand so many of the life-changing opportunities Gibault provides to the
people it serves.
I have witnessed a child’s excitement as they jump up and down to see an A
on their report card. I have also seen the nervous excitement of a child as they
walk up to receive their High School Diploma.
One thing each life-changing opportunity has in common is donors,
advocates and friends of our program have made them all possible.
As donors we show our commitment to making the world and our own
Chairman of the Board communities stronger by investing in the lives of children. This investment is
Dale Heger, PSD
returned a hundred times over when we help a child fi nd success in school and
and his wife Betty
give them the skills they need to lead productive lives when they leave Gibault.
I am grateful for your support and I hope you continue to see the role your
donations play in making life better for others. I encourage you to learn more about Gibault and visit one of
our programs. I know you will be pleased with what you see, but most importantly you will see your fi nancial
contributions are used to help make life better for others.
Since I have been at Gibault, I have learned many things. I have learned how to be myself, I have also learned the
people are here to help and this place can teach you how to get back with your loved ones. There is always someone
at Gibault to help you.
Katie Hall, CASA Director, receives
award from Deana Rule, Rensselaer
Chamber of Commerce President.
CASA
The Jasper County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program
welcomed an award from the Rensselaer Chamber of Commerce
December 2, 2009. The award honored one business or program that
enhanced the quality of life in Rensselaer for the 2009 year. The program
continues to outreach and gain community support as the awareness
increases. One child writes “I like my CASA because she is supportive. She
listens to me. CASA’s are very helpful. They understand and they try to help
you with their guidance. CASA’s are kind of like counselors, they help you
with issues. My CASA is always there for me, and I can trust her.”
The CASA program is expanding into Newton county in January 2010. The program hopes to recruit, train
and supervise 10 volunteers for that county. Sadly, Newton County has over 40 abuse and/or neglect cases.
If it is possible, the program hopes to expand to other counties in Indiana. If you know of an Indiana county
looking to start a CASA program, or know an interested volunteer in Jasper and/or Newton county, please
contact the CASA Director, Katie Hall at (219) 866-2196.
Opening their home
Michael and Jelana King, from Shelbyville, Indiana are Gibault’s fi rst
fully licensed foster parents! The Kings have been actively involved
with children in the Shelbyville community for a long time. They are
so excited about the opportunity to work with children in this capacity.
When they learned Gibault was recruiting foster parents, they quickly
jumped at the opportunity.
The Kings are well aware of the problems children face from broken
and troubled homes. Their passion is for the poor, abused and lonely
in their community. They remodeled their home with the intention of
providing a safe, comfortable place for children in need. The Kings
know children need somebody to reach out to them, to love them,
encourage them, be patient with them, and take time to teach them.
As foster parents, the Kings will be able to offer that to children in
their home.
Gibault is proud to have Michael and Jelana working with us to provide
life-changing opportunities for children, families and communities.
Interested in Becoming a Foster Parent?
Gibault’s Foster Care Program is currently recruiting
and training foster parents in the Shelby and the Jasper
County areas. By opening your home and hearts to
foster children, you are not just changing their lives
forever, but also your own. Contact Stephanie Bachelor
ISTEP at Gibault
March in Indiana brings to mind that fi rst Crocus poking its
purple blossom out of the snow drift. For schools in Indiana
it means the beginning of standardized testing. Students
in most grades are going to take ISTEP assessments as
well as the Graduation Qualifying Exam during the second
week of March. This can be a daunting time for students
enrolled in classes at Gibault. Test anxiety along with past
performance can discourage even the best of students. To
prepare Holy Cross students for these assessments, lessons
are planned to coincide with the state standards. Many
classes include some form of a “quick check up” review of
previously covered material at the beginning or end of class.
But as the time for the GQE assessment draws near
organized study sessions are scheduled after school for those
students needing to pass in order to receive a diploma. (The
GQE measures achievement in English and Mathematics.)
These students meet with teachers for an hour a week to
review material that will be on the exam and receive teacher
insights on test taking.
The students seem to realize the importance of these
assessments and appreciate the opportunity to prepare for
the tests.
Middle School Teacher Karen Olsen works with a group of students to
prepare them for the ISTEP.
Karen Olsen, Teacher
Students work with Gibault
teachers during the school week
to review materials they will be
tested on during the ISTEP and
GQE.
It is a diffi cult task for our
students to pass the ISTEP.
Many arrive in our
care without the proper
background to successfully
complete standardized
testing.
This is further compounded
when a child arrives only
days before these tests are
given.
Sadly there is no rule to help
children in these situations.
This is why teachers at
Gibault work diligently to
help our kids make the most
of their situation as they
prepare to take standardized
tests.
EDUCATING AT GIBAULT
As I approach my 10th anniversary as a Holy Cross High School Math
Teacher I wanted to share and refl ect on my role at Gibault.
I came to Gibault after teaching at Lafayette Central Catholic Jr./Sr. High
School for 13 years. What a difference academically between the two
schools! At C.C., I taught students who I am sure learned in spite of me.
Many of these students would become National Merit Scholars, receive
perfect S.A.T. scores and are now doctors, lawyers and business owners
in the community. I hope the students I teach at Holy Cross are able to
learn because of me. They often come to my class without mastery of
the basic skills needed to learn high school math. Some students have
not experienced much success in school. Many have learning disabilities,
which also hampers the learning process, and they may not be able to
learn in the traditional way math is often taught. The time I may have
spent grading the daily work of my 100+ students at Central Catholic is now
spent preparing lessons and adapting them to accommodate the learning
styles of my Holy Cross students, while still teaching the state standards.
Teaching at both Central Catholic and Holy Cross has been more than a job;
it is a ministry. While at C.C., I was able to share my faith daily with my students through prayer before every
class, all school Masses, communal confession services and class discussions. At Gibault I believe I am called
to live my faith in all of my interactions with my students. The Peace Prayer of St. Francis on my desk is my
daily reminder of what I am to do because of my faith.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon:
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be
consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Music Makes a Difference
When John fi rst came to us he had failed in school
and had a negative attitude about education. After
his fi rst day in music class I also learned music
wasn’t John’s cup of tea. Within a couple days
John decided to give the bass guitar a chance.
Now John is our bass guitarist for Gibault’s Lab
Band.
Another student, Garrett entered instrumental
music class. He was an undisciplined guitarist
with anger issues. Today Garrett is lead vocalist
and guitarist for our Lab Band.
These boys are examples of how our music
program helps kids get reintroduced to the
educational system while learning skills they can
take away with them.
The success these boys found in music has helped
them to learn hard work can pay off in their other
classes as well as in their personal lives as they
work to overcome their personal obstacles.
Music is a healthy
form of
expression
for many of
our students.
Student Art
Teaching art at Gibault has been an
experience I truly treasure. I am able
to spend each day in the creativity
of our students and guide their
artistic skills. The art room is a
place where each student can come
in and express their thoughts
through the production of art. The
students enjoy the outlet they
receive in art to express what is on
their minds. The art classes allow
them to release any problems they
might have through the tools of a
pencil, paint brush or clay.
Hi, my name is Kaycee. I am 16 and have been
at Gibault for almost 3 ½ months and soon to be
discharged. I can honestly say Gibault has helped me
in more than one way. I have learned skills that will
help me when I’m out on my own. I’ve learned to get
along with my family and how the choices I make
will affect me. In this journey, I have become more
mature in my opinion, and I honestly think this was a
good experience for me. Gibault has helped me want
to change for the better and make positive decisions. I
want to thank the clients, staff, and supervisors who
helped me get through this tough journey and turn it
into something positive!
Thank you,
Mother is glad her daughter
is receiving help at Gibault.
On Friday, December 18, 2009, everyone gathered in the Guardian
Angels Convocation Center for Gibault’s Annual Christmas program
for the kids. The teachers, therapists, secretaries, cooks, maintenance
personnel and even a few parents were able to attend the 11 o’clock
program.
Nearly all the children were seated when I noticed one of the girls
walking over to her mother that was sitting next to me. She handed
her mother a Christmas card. The mother opened the Christmas
card and read the handwritten note she had enclosed. The mother
gave her daughter a “big” hug. You could tell by their hug there was
a lot of love for each other. After her daughter returned to her seat
and joined the other children - the mother stated to me, “ When my
daughter came here nearly a year ago, she could only print two
inch letters on the paper. Now she is writing in cursive.” Chills
went down my back after hearing these words from this mother.
Gibault is truly making a difference in the life of this child!
The Christmas program began with the Pledge of Allegiance and
a prayer. Gibault’s music teacher and three students played
electric guitars and sang Christmas carols. A few of the children
came up to the microphone and sang while the guitars played. Near
the end of the program, all 12 rows with staff and students sang the
Twelve Days of Christmas. It was a joyous time. Before the mother
left, she turned to me and said, “ This is the best Christmas
program I have ever attended.”
Gotta Have Love
A student gathering information for a school project recently asked a question
of me –“What is the one thing you cannot live without?” I offered several silly
answers over which we had a good laugh, and then I was urged by the young
lady to be serious. We discussed basic needs like food, water and sleep; and
agreed obviously we would perish without the right combination of those
things.
Then Emily and I looked at one another and simultaneously said, “Love.” 1
Corinthians 13:13 says, “Three things will last forever--faith, hope, and love--and
the greatest of these is love or charity.” Of people surveyed by Miss Emily with
varying ages, genders and backgrounds the most popular answer was love.
How about that? Are you surprised?
I am not surprised. I see proof of goodness every day of my life and every day
in my work at Gibault. I witness it in the gifts of our donors, in the groups who
ask for a speaker to learn what our mission is at Gibault and in the extra time
and care given by staff members to our children.
I also see it in the hearts of the children at Gibault through their concern
for others and their awareness of things going on in the world. I see it in the way they cheer for the
accomplishments of fellow students. I see it in the form of appreciation of staff that are able to help them
accept their past and encourage them to let go of their pain and heartache and set future goals.
I often joke with people that I grew up at Gibault as I was young and naïve at the start. But working at
Gibault for 22 years has also caused my heart to grow bigger, which is not a bad thing. Thanks to all of you
for reading this and for all you do for children.
Success
MUST
READ!!!!
Recently I was asked the following question: What
percentage of Gibault children are successful? I
often hesitate when I am asked that question, because I know
I am quite capable of presenting a percentage that explains how many
were discharged with completion of their goals and how many have been
incarcerated within one year following discharge. So why do I hesitate?
I hesitate because the staff at Gibault view success differently than a
percentage and the story below will hopefully explain our defi nition of
success.
Caitlyn is a 15-year old child with a diagnosis of Asperger’s disorder (Autism
spectrum), ADHD, Oppositional Defi ant Disorder, Reactive Attachment
Disorder, and a learning disorder. During her very early years of development,
she experienced a history of neglect and possible physical abuse as an infant.
Fortunately for Caitlyn, she was removed from home and placed with invested
relatives who later adopted her. Caitlyn’s adoptive parents revealed many
struggles with Caitlyn over the years. She displayed physical aggression, harm
to herself, social problems, unprovoked violent behaviors and explosive and dangerous behaviors toward
others when frustrated.
Caitlyn’s adoptive parents pursued assistance from the Public School System, Intensive Community Based
Services, Physicians, Psychiatrist, etc. Eventually the parents’ persistence resulted in Caitlyn’s admission into
our Day Treatment Program. This program provided Caitlyn the opportunity to travel to Gibault daily by bus
and participate in our specialized classroom for children on the Autism Spectrum. This is when we learned,
even Gibault staff can be greatly challenged. Caitlyn refused to participate in classroom lessons, insisted on
sleeping, refused to write, read or even leave an area if it was not her decision. Her behavior management
plan was changed quite often, she would cry and refuse to attend school. Numerous diffi culties occurred
on the bus and her parents and staff were often challenged by Caitlyn. In addition lack of progress required
increased treatment meetings, discussion pertaining to medication regime, etc. Caitlyn’s mother presented
a light for all at the end of the tunnel when she reminded Gibault staff and the Special Education Co-Op that
although we were experiencing diffi culties, she was actually progressing more at Gibault than she had in the
past. At this time it was decided Caitlyn would move into the CARE program to live on Gibault’s campus and
she would receive an individual staff member to work with her during daytime hours.
As Caitlyn began living on campus and attending on grounds school, Gibault staff learned a great deal from
Caitlyn and her parents. Apparently when Caitlyn attended public school she refused to take the ISTEP,
refused to read and write and would sleep or go out of location leaving school regularly. Caityln’s mother
reported she had never taken the ISTEP and she was informed Caitlyn would never write more than two
sentences her entire life.
Today, Caitlyn keeps a journal, she writes daily, she reads out loud in class, she has lost weight, her personal
hygiene has improved, she recently earned the education most improved student award, she receives
constructive criticism more frequently, she has reduced the number of self harming incidents, she is
participating in weekend visits with her family and she has displayed increased patience with certain
situations.
Caitlyn continues to become frustrated with events, she experiences diffi cult days in school, continues to
give up easily, requires assistance with almost all math work, has gone out of location off campus when
frustrated, at times curses at staff when she does not agree with a decision, experiences social problems in
some situations and struggles with interpersonal skills.
All adults involved in Caitlyn’s life understand once she leaves Gibault, she will most likely require assistance
for a very long time. However, I now ask you a very simple question: How do you measure success?
Ken Junk
For more than two decades Ken Junk was a faithful and strong
supporter of Gibault. Ken and his wife Margaret viewed the
children at Gibault as their own. If you were to ask him how many kids
he had, he would tell you, “Many, and they live in Terre Haute.” Ken
would regularly call Gibault and ask. “What do my kids need?” He
worked to make sure these needs were met. Ken clearly defi ned what
it meant to be a parent as he provided for our kids and celebrated their
successes.
Ken and Margaret’s legacy of caring and love
lives on at Gibault’s Campus in the Kenneth and
they live on in the form of young men and
women who have had an opportunity to learn to
lead better lives because of their involvement
