St J o h n ’s N e w sCareers & Work RelatedLearningCareers Update September 2013The careers adviser, Alison Baigrie, attends St John’s once a fortnight and willbe here on 26 September, 10 October, 24 and 25 October this term. Individualmeetings with Alison can be organised through Mrs Smith in F223. Alison isalso running a careers drop-in centre during lunchtimes for students on thesame days – refreshments will be available. No appointment is necessary andstudents can pop in if they have any queries about career ideas, courses oroption choices.Students in Years 12 and 13 are welcome to organise a guidance interview withMr Bowkett, Sixth Form Careers Adviser. These can also be organised throughMrs Smith in F223.The Army Youth Engagement Team will be visiting St John’s on Wednesday2 October – they will be delivering a presentation on the army’s role in societylasting about 45 minutes. Major Ross will also be present at the end of thepresentation to answer questions students may have about careers in the army.Although specific classes have been timetabled for this if there are any studentsin Years 10 or 11 interested in attending the presentation or would like timewith Major Ross after the presentation please could they let the careers office(F223) know in advance of this date.Year 11Students will be allocated group sessions during the term and assemblies willbe as follows:-Monday 30 September – New College and Swindon CollegeThursday 3 October – ApprenticeshipsMonday 14 October – St John’s Sixth FormOpen Day events are advertised on the careers board in student services.Future dates for this year:-Higher Education Fair – Wednesday 23 April 2014Work Experience Year 10 – 7 to 11 July 2014Work Experience Year 12 – 14 to 18 July 2013There will be a work experience briefing evening for parents of Year 10students on Thursday 7 November.Mrs F Havill, Careers and Work Related Learning ManagerPage 6
