The vastmajority of students are well prepared, smart and hopefully raring to go! Theresults this year were excellent. Given the pressure, noted in the press, toreduce grades particularly at the A*/A Level, St John’s did particularly well.At A2 level this was a record year with 85% gaining A*-C grades and 57%achieving a remarkable A*-B. With a 100% pass rate we are delighted.Nearly all students achieved their first choice placements at University andelsewhere. There were quite a number of outstanding performances placingSt John’s well inside the top 25% of 6 th Forms nationally. Some of our topperforming A2 students include:Alex Fforde, Michael Hardy, Michael Loveday, Fiona Moore and TomRogerson who all achieved 2 A* grades. Lucy Budd (A*AA) and SethO’Farrell (AAAA) are set to study English and French respectively atOxford. Head Boy Adam Pratchett with 3 A grades will studyInternational Relations at Nottingham.GCSE has been a focus for a political drive to ‘raise standards’ and ‘makeexams harder’. We were therefore really pleased to find that 69% achieved5A*-C (Inc. English and Maths) and 78% 5A*-C. With re-marks underwayand several upgrades already in, this will raise these percentages, making thisour second best year ever. The following students achieved remarkableresults:Florence Lenehan (11 A* grades and an A), Lucy Smith (10 A* 1 A),Jonny Budd (8 A* 3 A), Josh Baldock (7 A* 5 A), Lizzie Cope (7 A* 5A),Beckie Doyle (8 A* 4A), Sophie Goodrich (8 A* 4A) and Harry Morgan(8 A* 4A)The IB Students did exceptionally well again returning an average points scoreof 33 (out of a possible 45) compared with a world wide average of 29.8.Matt Barker 41 points going to Warwick, Frances Hamblin 41 pointsheaded for Oxford, Carmella Lowkis 40 points also going to Warwick,Dominic Veveris 39 points bound for ICU Japan, Charlie Linney 39points is going to Nottingham University and Dan Callaghan 38 pointsearns him a place at Loughborough.Dr P K HazlewoodPrincipalPage 1

St J o h n ’s N e w sLiteracySupporting Your Child's LiteracyGood literacy skills are essential for success in school as well as in lifeand here are a few simple activities you could do at home to helpimprove your child’s skills: encourage your child to read for pleasure; read with your child; look through your child’s classwork with them andtalk about what they have been learning that day orweek; give books, book tokens and stationery as presents; if a book has been made into a film then read it with your child, watch the film anddiscuss the similarities, differences and how the director has interpreted the story; start a reading group with your child and their friends and parents; discuss articles in newspapers and magazines with your child; discuss films or television programmes with your child; encourage your child to check their writing for mistakes; rather than telling your child correct spellings, encourage dictionary use; join a library with your child; discuss how advertisements on television and in magazines work to persuadeaudiences; encourage your child to write using different sentence structures; where possible, refer to the audiences and purposes of different written and visualtexts; play word games with your child like Scrabble and do crosswords or ‘wordsearches’together; http://www.literacytrust.org.uk/reading_connects is a DCSF funded initiative deliveredby the National Literacy Trust.
