a message from the presidentOn September 7, 2010, Cornish College ofthe Arts hosted our Convocation to open the2010 – 11 academic year. It was my honorto welcome our students, faculty, and staffto the beginning of another year of discoveryand artistic growth. This year’s freshmen class,the class of 2014, is unique. It is Cornish’s100-year class — the class that will graduateduring the celebration of Cornish’s Centennial.It has been my great pleasure and privilegesince I arrived at Cornish in 1994 to guideand reinvigorate the College as we face thechallenges and emerging opportunities of anew century. At the center of my efforts, I havetried to remain true to the core inspiration ofNellie Cornish’s ideas about the education ofthe entire artist. This is an opportune time totake stock both of the rich tradition that hasnurtured Cornish and of its unfolding potential,which is embodied above all in the talents andenthusiasm that our students, faculty, andstaff bring to this community.One of my greatest joys has been to witnessthe gifted work of our faculty and alumni.The alumni and faculty representing Cornishin the pages that follow are wonderfulexamples of the rich quality of educationoffered at Cornish, and the way in whichthat education prepares our students for alife in the arts and in the world.Our faculty and alumni have enhancedCornish College of the Arts’ reputationlocally, nationally, and internationally. FromRon Erickson, who first designed costumesfor Cornish 30 years ago and continues towork with arts organizations across theNorthwest, to Peter Dylan O’Connor andMJ Seiber who are helping to build one ofSeattle’s newest and most exciting theatercompanies, Cornish feeds the culturallandscape. Reaching further out, LukeKehrwald has taught live sound engineeringin Mongolia, and William Nellor, whograduated from Cornish 60 years ago,shares highlights of his extraordinary careerin advertising, cartooning and painting.Karen Guzak is one of the ultimate examplesof the Cornish alumnae who contribute asartists, innovators, and citizens – her rolesinclude artist, teacher, community developer,and now, Mayor of Snohomish, Washington.Cornish College of the Arts is a place wherestudents, faculty, and staff can experiencethe whole human enterprise of creativityand innovative thinking which is essential inorder to meet the challenges of the 21stcentury.
