Photo: Chris Bennion.AUDITIONAn audition is required to be considered for admission to <strong>the</strong>Dance program at <strong>Cornish</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>. The auditiongauges your potential for success in <strong>the</strong> Dance Program. Previousdance training is required for admission.DVD AUDITIONS/ONLINE AUDITIONSThe Dance faculty strongly encourages you to make every effortto audition in person. It is to your benefit. However, if distanceprevents you from auditioning in person, you may send in a DVDaudition or post your audition online at accepted.com.WHEN & WHERE TO AUDITIONWe <strong>of</strong>fer auditions on campus and in several locations around <strong>the</strong>country. Due to <strong>the</strong> popularity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dance program at <strong>Cornish</strong>and <strong>the</strong> limited number <strong>of</strong> spaces available for new students eachyear, you are encouraged to audition in person. If you cannot, youmay audition by DVD. On-Campus auditions for Fall 2013 willtake place on November 15, 2012 and February 18, 2013.Off-campus auditions are held in <strong>the</strong> fall, typically in <strong>the</strong>se cities:Interlochen, Chicago, Minneapolis, Dallas, Houston, Miami,Denver, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Francisco.EARLY AUDITIONS AND OPEN HOUSEFor those students who would prefer to audition early, <strong>the</strong> DanceDepartment hosts Early Auditions on November 15, 2012 and aDance Department Open House on November 16, 2012.THE AUDITIONYou will participate in both a ballet and a modern technique classat an intermediate level. You will be observed and evaluated by amember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dance Faculty on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> previous technicaltraining, alignment, core support, expressive phrasing, andindividual artistic potential.For audition classes you should wear a form-fitting leotard and tights.For ballet classes, wear s<strong>of</strong>t ballet shoes (no pointe work is required).For modern classes, be prepared to dance with bare feet.Your audition material should be 10–20 minutes long. It shoulddemonstrate your technical level and ability in ballet and moderndance. If possible, you should be filmed in your current danceclass. The recorded image should show your entire body.The ballet portion should be 5–10 minutes in length. Pleaseperform several barre exercises (plies, tendus, ronds de jambes,développés, grand battements) and center floor combinationsincluding adagio, pirouette, petit allegro and grand allegro. Ifpossible, <strong>the</strong> camera should be focused on <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bodyduring <strong>the</strong> barre in order to record alignment.The modern portion should be 5–10 minutes in length. Performtypical modern warm-up exercises demonstrating use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>spine; at least some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se exercises should be performed in astanding position. The recording should also include center andacross <strong>the</strong> floor combinations that demonstrate use <strong>of</strong> space.If you have choreographic experience, you are invited to includesamples <strong>of</strong> your choreography in addition to <strong>the</strong> ballet andmodern exercises.If you choose to audition by DVD, two letters <strong>of</strong> recommendationare required, one <strong>of</strong> which must be from a current danceinstructor. These letters should accompany your DVD (sealed inenvelopes and signed on <strong>the</strong> outside by <strong>the</strong> person who wrote<strong>the</strong> recommendation), or your references may send <strong>the</strong> lettersdirectly to <strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Admission.On-campus auditions may also include a short interviewdiscussing your training, experience, goals and interest in<strong>Cornish</strong>. Transfer credits can also be discussed at this time.

Please take time to reflect on <strong>the</strong> topics andcreate a thoughtful response to each.PLEASE WRITE AND SUBMIT TWO WRITTEN PIECESEach composition should be written on separate sheets <strong>of</strong> paper.Each must be 1–2 pages, double-spaced and typed. At <strong>the</strong> top,write your full name, telephone number and email address.1 Personal Statement Please describe your prior education andinvolvement in your art form. Describe <strong>the</strong> work you do andwhat influences it. What are your artistic goals, what are yourpassions and what has led you to pursue a career in <strong>the</strong> field?How will attending <strong>Cornish</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> contribute toyour plans and aspirations?2 Influence Essay How has a piece <strong>of</strong> visual art, a performance, acomposition, an example <strong>of</strong> design, a piece <strong>of</strong> literature or afilm affected you? Please describe <strong>the</strong> work and explain how itaffected you as a person and artist. The piece you write aboutmust be <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> someone o<strong>the</strong>r than yourself.APPLICATION FEE—$40··Payable by check, credit card or online with yourelectronic application.··Need-based fee waivers are available. Current high schoolstudents should request <strong>the</strong> NACAC or <strong>College</strong> Board feewaiver application from <strong>the</strong>ir high school counselor.··All o<strong>the</strong>r students should contact <strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Admission.TRANSCRIPTSHigh school transcript–Required <strong>of</strong> all students with less than oneyear <strong>of</strong> college credit. Minimum GPA is 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.COLLEGE CREDITS EARNED DURING HIGH SCHOOLWashington State students who have taken Running Start classesapply to <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong> as freshmen with earned credit. This alsoapplies to students from o<strong>the</strong>r states with similar dual-enrollmentor “college in <strong>the</strong> high school” programs. To receive credit forcollege level work, students must submit transcripts from <strong>the</strong>college or university where <strong>the</strong>y completed <strong>the</strong> courses.COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTSApplicants who have completed a minimum <strong>of</strong> one college coursefor credit, o<strong>the</strong>r than through a program such as Running Start,are considered transfer applicants and must submit transcriptsfrom each institution attended. Transfer applicants complete <strong>the</strong>same Application for Admission and audition or review asdescribed. Transferability <strong>of</strong> credit is based upon both <strong>the</strong> review<strong>of</strong> college transcripts and <strong>the</strong> audition or portfolio review.HOME SCHOOLED STUDENTSHome schooled applicants will be evaluated on an individualbasis. Applicants should supply as much information as possibleabout <strong>the</strong>ir home school experience. At minimum, a passing scoreon <strong>the</strong> GED exam must be submitted. In addition, transcripts,descriptions <strong>of</strong> all courses, and reading lists should be submittedto <strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Admission. If courses have been taken at a localhigh school or college, transcripts must be submitted. Whereas<strong>Cornish</strong> does not require SAT or ACT scores as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>admission process, <strong>the</strong>se tests are particularly valuable.
