Chaplain’s Cornerby Chaplain Herb SmithThis month we celebrate the 234th anniversary of America’sDeclaration of Independence. During our country’s mosttrying test of survival, President Lincoln provided the leadershipwe needed to bring us through. Upon his election, and en-routeto Washington, he had this to say at a stopover in Philadelphia:“I am filled with deep emotion at finding myself standing herein the place where collected together the wisdom, patriotism anddevotion to principle from which sprang the institutions underwhich we live… All the political sentiments I entertain have beendrawn… from the sentiments, which originated and were givento the world from this hall in which we stand… I have oftenpondered over the dangers which were incurred by the men whoassembled here and adopted that (document)— I have ponderedover the toils that were endured by the officers and soldiers of thearmy who achieved that independence. I have often inquired ofmyself, what great principle or idea it was that kept this (union)so long together.“It was not the mere matter of the separation of the colonies fromthe motherland; but something in that Declaration giving liberty, not alone to the people of this country, but hope to the worldfor all future time. It was that which gave promise that in duetime the weights should be lifted from the shoulders of all men,and that all should have an equal chance. If itcan, I will consider myself one of the happiest men in the world ifI can help to save it… But, if this country cannot be saved withoutgiving up that principle – I would rather be assassinated on thisspot then to surrender it.”Four years later he had this to say at his second inaugural:“Neither party expected for the war the magnitude or the durationwhich it has already attained… Both read the same Bible andpray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare ask a just God’sassistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men’sfaces, but let us judge not, that we be not judged.“The prayers of both could not be answered. That of neither hasbeen answered fully. The Almighty has His own purposes. ‘Woeunto the world because of offenses; for it must needs be thatoffenses come, but woe to (them) by whom the offense cometh.’“If we shall suppose that American slavery is one of those offenseswhich, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills toremove, and that He gives to both North and South this terriblewar as the woe due to those by whom the offense came, shall wediscern therein any departure from those divine attributes whichthe believers in a living God always ascribe to Him?“Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourgeof war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God will that it continueuntil all the wealth piled by the bondsmen’s two hundred andfifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every dropof blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn withthe sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must besaid ‘the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.“With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmnessin the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on tofinish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds, to carefor him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, andhis orphan—to do all which may achieve and cherish a just andlasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.”Timely words even for today. A month later, he was taken. Patricia W. ElkertonATTORNEY AT LAW“Every Estate Needs A Plan”ESTATE PLANNING, TRUSTSPROBATE, CONSERVATORSHIPSAND POWERS OF ATTORNEY7777 Alvarado Rd. The luncheon was held at the El Cajon Elks Lodge. Wehad a good turnout with a little over 100 members and guestspresent. As always, a good time was had by all. There were no special speakers or guests present this time. (Iguess we are all special.) Skip Murphy gave us a little update onwhat the retirement board has been up to lately. The retirementboard was still having a meeting when our meeting started, sowe didn't have a good update on the Tier A medical paymentduring our meeting. Turnsout that the retirement boardis reducing our medicalpayment for the Tier Aretirees (those that retiredwith the 3%@50).Bob Evans (seated) chats with StanHay and Leon Hoffman. We discussed what we weregoing to do for the homelessveterans this year. Aftermaking our deliveries lastyear, I learned that there wasa big need for sweat outfits, socks, and underwear. They also need toiletries—toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, and deodorant. We decided to try to provide as manysupplies as possible. If you would like to donate; all items should be new. We needsweat shirts and pants in various sizes, men and women'sunderwear and socks. I think the only items that need to begender specific is the underwear. We also need new sleepingbags. We had a good raffle with plenty of prizes. The person that tookthe walking stick home last meeting did not bring it back for thisluncheon.
