The Friends’ SchoolFriendsmusic ConcertThursday 3 May 2012Celebrating 125 Years ofMusic at Friends’

Music at Friends’The story of Music at The Friends' School is almost as old as the story of theSchool itself. Many early Quaker schools distrusted music. However, SamuelClemes, the first Headmaster, suggested in 1887 that the new Friends' Schoolshould allow hymn singing. By 1891 there was a singing class and a newpiano. There were successes in Trinity College Examinations, hymns sung inAssembly and an increasing appreciation of music.Edmund Gower was appointed Headmaster in 1901 but his liking for musicconcerned some Quakers. However, when accepting the appointment he promisedthat his enjoyment of music would be pure and wholesome. Echoes reportedin April that Edmund Gower had entertained the school with songs, with all joining in the chorus, on the way home from the holiday excursionthat celebrated his arrival.Ernest Unwin, Headmaster from 1923, loved music and singing. He introducedAlma Mater as the School song, and wanted all members of the school communityto develop an appreciation of music so introduced Musical Hours tothe school program. In 1933 the School received a Carnegie Set, an advancedamplifier and a catalogued collection of 600 records. These records wereused daily in assemblies. The first school orchestra was formed in 1945 and in 1947 Mr. W. Turner wasappointed to conduct the ensemble - Mr. Turner's association with the Orchestralasted nearly twenty years.William Oats, Headmaster from 1945 to 1973, had a great interest in music. His father had been a church choirmaster and his mother the organist - WilliamOats described the choir as his creche. His interest was realised by performancesnot only at assemblies, musical evenings and speech nights, butalso by staging musicals, with Gilbert and Sullivan shows as favourites.William Oats often shared his own music with students, arranging pieces, and conducting the choir and orchestra. He would regularly lead youngerstudents through a song from the piano for which reason he was describedby one student as "the man who sings with us". His daughter and later Co-Principal, Stephanie Farrall, recalls William Oats describing and thenplaying a work from the Carnegie set at each daily assembly. Stephanie alsoremembers with great fondness all Year 4 to 12 students combining to singat the end of year speech nights. These would regularly conclude with thecommunity carol O Come All Ye Faithful followed by a deep silence.

In 1959, Donald Holder, a formerFriends' School student, was appointedas Head of Music and the first fulltime Music Teacher. Interest grew, andin 1962 a Pipe Band was added to otherensembles.During the 1970s - a time full of music -Noel Ancell (1970-74) and then PhilippaMoyes (1975-77) were Directors of Music.Learning to play the bagpipesThere were more Gilbert and Sullivanoperas, the first production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoatand in 1975, the first Whole School Music Festival. The then Principal,Rod Grosvenor, another school leader who loved music, developed theFriends' School Choir and continued the tradition of community singing, something that students of that time still remember. In 1978 the School Orchestra was reformed with Peter Davies as HonoraryConductor. By 1980, the Junior School Orchestra had also been reformed. The Friends' Singers, a group of students, staff, parents and friends ofthe school was created, with Rod Grosvenor as Director - this group is stillin existence today. There was a brass band, a recorder group and a concertband. The old boys' boarding house, currently the High School and ClemesArt rooms, became the Music Suite.During the 1980s Hodgkin Hall became too small for the school concerts andthey were moved to the University Centre. In 1987, the Centenary Year, The Inward Light by Donald Kay was commissioned. This was also the year Peter Davies became Director of Music. WithPeter's direction, and the support of fellow music teachers Frances Underwood, who was also Co-Head of the then Junior School from 1989, and HelenAnderson, the range of music opportunities grew as did student interest inMusic. Ensembles included several orchestras, a concert band, a number ofchoirs and a very successful flute choir, led by Peter Davies' wife, Barbara. In 1988, Grease, the first of our biennial musicals, was performed. Thestrong collaboration between Peter Davies and Susan Williams saw manysuccessful stage productions follow, including several written by staffand students. These included Wapping (1995) and Visions of Vietnam (1997).(Continued Page 6)

In 1996 the parent support group Friendsmusic was formed. The last foundingmember of the group, Gill Edmondson, retired only last year aftersixteen years of superb service.Friendsmusic has made a significant contribution by fund-raising and supportinga wide range of musical events. Members of the group were importantin ensuring that High School and Clemes students were provided withspecialist music facilities; for much of the School's history, rehearsals andMusic classes had taken place in an odd assortment of rooms and buildings. In 2002 the Sheila Given Music Centre was opened and a specialist teachingspace in Morris soon followed. An unforeseen development in the musical life of the School has been theemergence of the open-entry marimba program. What started as a one-dayworkshop for Year 5 and 6 students in 2001 has evolved into an ensembleexperience now involving close to 150 students from Morris to Year 12.Judith Tudball became Director of Music in 2004. Her energetic leadershipand firm belief in what could be achieved created a dynamic music programwhich saw Friends' become one of the top Tasmanian schools for Music. In2007 the School celebrated its 120th anniversary, and to mark the occasion,well-known Australian composer Paul Jarman was commissioned to writeLet Your Life Speak which was performed at the Federation Concert Hall inAugust of that year.In 2009 Craig Fullerton's interest in symphonic music saw an orchestra reformonce more, meeting on an occasional basis as the Symphony of Friends. In 2011 the orchestra performed another commissioned work, this time bySouth Australian Quaker musician and composer, Peter Webb. The piece,Of Friends, The Spirit, was written for choir and orchestra and in Peter'swords, "... reflected in some way on the Quaker beliefs which underpin theunique culture of The Friends' School".Two significant developments have marked the very recent history of Musicat the School. The first is the 2011 opening of the very beautiful FarrallCentre and the second is the 2012 acquisition of a grand piano for the Centre. The Farrall Centre, the building of which was commemorated by PeterWebb's piece, has quickly become a place to gatherand enjoy the talents, musical or otherwise, of membersof the School community. The acquisition of thegrand piano, made possible by the School's Parentsand Friends Association, has enhanced the use ofthe space and helped to ensure the longevity of amusical heritage at The Friends' School.
