Stall-holders, stall volunteers and support volunteers are encouraged to attend.Graeme EwingPresidentHomestay RequestShunsuke Isogai has been working as a Japanese Assistant Teacher (JAT) in the High <strong>School</strong>and Clemes since March. We are currently seeking a homestay placement for Shunsuke,beginning as soon as possible until 20 December.Key requirements of the program involve providing Shunsuke with a bedroom of his own,breakfast and dinner. In return, host families will receive a small allowance to cover nominalexpenses, but more importantly will participate in a wonderful sharing of cultures.Shunsuke has come to Tasmania as part of the Japanese Assistant Teacher Scheme facilitated<strong>by</strong> UTAS. As such he is required to meet the occasional weekend commitment at theuniversity. We are therefore seeking a home stay placement for Shunsuke in theHobart/Eastern Shore areas in order for him to travel to and from the university and schoolwith relative ease. Shunsuke is familiar with our public transport system and is willing to useit to get to and from his sporting commitments and UTAS, providing he is able to access alocal bus route – particularly on a weekend.2

This could be yourchild's tutor, the <strong>School</strong> Counsellor, Lyn Tunbridge, Anne Lynch or Tony Barrett.Jean Yeates Writing Prize<strong>The</strong> winners in this year's Jean Yeates Prize were announced at Assembly last Thursday.Lydia Birch won first place with her short story <strong>The</strong> Glass Cage and Anita Corrigan wasrunner-up. <strong>The</strong> adjudicator for the Jean Yeates Prize must always be a <strong>Friends'</strong> Old Scholar;this year's judge was acclaimed young writer Favel Parret, who now lives in Victoria. Favelcommented that “All of the entries were outstanding."5


She offered some of the wisdom of Shakespeare as inspiration to all budding writers: "Ourdoubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, <strong>by</strong> fearing to attempt."Lydia's prize was $200, sponsored annually <strong>by</strong> the <strong>Friends'</strong> Old Scholars.Evatt TrophyTwo outstanding student public speakers, Andrew Dunn-Lobban and Jethro Cohen, haverecently won the United Nations State Evatt Trophy. <strong>The</strong>y also won the James Brown Awardas best all-rounders. Jethro was voted Best Negotiator as well. Both students now go on tocompete in the national round to be held in Hobart in December.
