About us:The profile of children with cancerWhen the PICS was first established,a thorough examination was made ofthe children diagnosed with cancer inthat year (2005). Although the extensivedata collection has not been repeated,the number of newly diagnosed childrenwith malignancies has been rising byapproximately 7–10% per annum inline with population growth in children.On review, we believe the ratios andpercentages relating to the data extractedin 2005 remains the same.605040The following graphs summarise the profiles of newly diagnosed children in 2005by service site.Figure 2:ProfilesProfilesofofnewlynewlydiagnoseddiagnosedchildrenchildrenbybysitesiteandandageageinin 20052005In 2005, 159 children were diagnosedwith cancer at one of the two majorVictorian treatment services (RCH andSH). 1 Of these children:• Over 75% (n =120) occurred inchildren under the age of 13 years• 45% (n=71) were aged 5 yearsand under• 31% (n=49) were aged 6 –12 years• 25% (n=39) were adolescentsaged over 13 years.Of all the different cancers diagnosed:Number30201000 – 5RCH6 – 12AgeMMCPeter Mac * 13+• 51.5% were leukaemias or lymphomas• 27% were solid tumours such asWilms’ tumours and bone cancers• 21.3% were brain tumours or othertumours of the central nervous system(CNS).Figure 1: Types of cancers treated atRCH and MMCIn 2005, approximately 70 childrenreceived radiotherapy at Peter MacCallum<strong>Cancer</strong> Centre.1. All children under the age of 15 years were diagnosed within the two major treating services. At leasta proportion of older adolescents may be diagnosed and managed within adult services.
