Looking forward18|<strong>Paediatric</strong> <strong>Integrated</strong> <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Service</strong> (PICS) <strong>Annual</strong> Report <strong>2007</strong>– 20<strong>08</strong>Adolescent and Young Adults (AYA)A recent audit of children diagnosed withcancer at the RCH indicated that 30%were over the age of 12. An AYA ProjectSteering Committee will be convenedto provide direction and oversight toreview the services, standards of careand service gaps for AYAs admitted toRCH and SH Children’s <strong>Cancer</strong> Centres.The Steering Committee will makerecommendations on strengtheningservices available to AYAs being managedat the CCC. Work will commence in 20<strong>08</strong>and it is envisaged will be completed byJune 2009. PICS will also be contributingto Victoria’s <strong>Cancer</strong> Action Plan (VCAP)statewide AYA service to be lead byonTrac. It is envisaged this will beannounced at the end of 20<strong>08</strong>.Culturally and LinguisticallyDiverse families (CALD)Between January <strong>2007</strong> and June 20<strong>08</strong>,just over 20% of parents of newlydiagnosed children were born in one of27 non-English speaking countries. Thisproject will develop and document aservice model which articulates a seriesof principles to guide practice to respondbetter to the needs of all CALD families,regardless of their English languageproficiency. The model will identify arange of strategies to strengthen theservice system, its policies, protocolsand processes and will include animplementation strategy. It is estimatedthis scoping exercise will be completed byDecember 20<strong>08</strong>, with recommendationsto be reviewed and an implementationplan established early in 2009.
