Our vision of care‘The best care, in the best facility, as close to home as possible’The PICS vision extends across the whole cancer care pathwayfrom diagnosis to long-term survival or death, and through themany developmental stages of the child or adolescent’s life.The goal for PICS is as follows:All Victorian children and adolescents with cancer and theirfamilies have access to high quality, safe and effective clinicaland psychosocial care that is well coordinated and provided inenvironments that are conducive to healing and coping. Our core values and principlesThe core values of PICS and its partners are to work as an effective teamtogether to provide optimal family-centred care. In line with these values,the following principles will guide practice:• We accept that the provision of highquality clinical and psychosocial careis the core business of all PICS sitesand agreed regional services.• We will provide family-centred carewith the child and family as the unitof care.• We will provide optimal clinical carein line with evidence-based clinicalpractice and agreed standards of care.• We will support and facilitate thechild / family’s access to appropriateclinical trials.• We will actively participate in orcontribute to a range of laboratory,clinical or psychosocial researchactivities that aim to improveoutcomes for children and familiesin the future.• We work in partnership with the familyto ensure informed decision-makingand to provide care for the child thatmeets their emotional, social, anddevelopmental needs.• We will proactively identify andmeet the needs of the individualchild and family.• We recognise that our families arehighly stressed and distressed.We will take a preventative andearly intervention approach, aimedat building children and families’resilience, and develop systems andprocesses that will reduce and notexacerbate distress wherever possible.• Our services and care will be age anddevelopmentally appropriate.• We recognise that families come fromdiverse backgrounds with differingcapacities and skills.
