DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT (INEKE HOUTMAN)“I think Sjoerd wrote a magnificent scenario at daggers drawn; it keeps tipping over in all directions. It seems to have been written effortlessly, but everything has been thought about. It’s a scenariothat dares to take a risk, the risk of a signature of its own. The scenario is multifarious but it has onesingle style. It’s emotional as well as light, it puts things in perspective and it is tragicomic. On thesurface is the smile that makes you eager to see this film, but under the surface is that deeper andmelancholy tone that makes you even more eager to watch this film.Love and forgetting are the two central themes in the film. They are treated both hilariously andharrowingly. Hilarious in the scenes in which grandpa fools his relatives, who’ve come to ‘guard’ himby acting demented. Or the scenes where Grace and grandpa try to make the old people’s home alivelier place. Harrowing because it’s tragic that people die, or want to forget or are forgotten or areunable to forget.Fortunately grandpa and Grace are cheerful persons, stubbornly looking for quality of life. As a resultthe film is not a gloomy but a tragic-comic and in the end an adventurous film about two people whoneed each other to struggle their way out of their situation. It’s a multifaceted film with a deep, sensitive layer and an absurd, comic layer. During the film Grace develops from being a highlyadaptive girl into a girl that stands up for herself. Eventually this allows her to have the kind ofcontact with her mother that she always wanted. Grandpa is a wonderfully extreme personality. He’ssturdy as well as incredibly clumsy, deeply unhappy and utterly cheerful. He finds himself and then, finally, dares to stand up for himself too.The “De Haan” family lives in a realistic universe. A universe one can leave by going out of theneighbourhood. From their point of view the rest of the world lies behind that gate. The world of thebank, the cars and the offices. Vincent de Pater was responsible for the art direction, he has atimeless and classic style.Music is very important in this film. We were very fortunate to work with Vincent van Warmerdamagain. He composed the music for the western songs and the western themes and Melcher Meirman,Merlijn Snitker and Chris Nanne Wiegel composed the rest of the score and other songs.”
