He was regarded by many practitioners in<strong>Singapore</strong> not just as a formidable advocate and adviser but also as a friend and mentor.His cases include <strong>the</strong> leading decision <strong>of</strong> Caparo v Dickman [1990] 2 AC 605 and in morerecent years he developed a substantial <strong>Singapore</strong>an arbitration practice. As ViscountBledisloe QC, Christopher was an elected hereditary peer, and a popular and energeticcross-bench member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> House <strong>of</strong> Lords.This Prize seeks to honour his memory.The PrizeThe contributor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best paper will win an all-expense-paid 2-week internship withFountain Court Chambers in London, which will take place at a time to be mutuallyagreed between <strong>the</strong> winner and Fountain Court within a year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> announcement <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> winning entry.Essay TopicThe <strong>essay</strong> topic is: “How can an anti-suit injunction in relation to proceedingsbefore a competent court <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r jurisdiction ever be justified?”About Fountain Court and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>Fountain Court Chambers is a substantial and long-established set <strong>of</strong> commercialbarristers based in <strong>the</strong> Temple, London, UK. CHRISTOPHER BATHURST ESSAY PRIZE RULES1. Fountain Court Chambers (Fountain Court) and <strong>the</strong> Estate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 3 rd Viscount Bledisloe, with <strong>the</strong>support <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Singapore</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> (<strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>), sponsors <strong>the</strong> Christopher Bathurst EssayPrize (<strong>the</strong> Essay Prize). The Essay Prize will be awarded to <strong>the</strong> best original, unpublished <strong>essay</strong> on aspecified topic dealing with an aspect <strong>of</strong> commercial litigation and dispute resolution.2. Eligibility: The competition is open to:a. every full-time student enrolled in <strong>the</strong> LL.B. or LL.M. or PhD programme at <strong>the</strong> NationalUniversity <strong>of</strong> <strong>Singapore</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>;b. every full-time student enrolled in <strong>the</strong> LL.B. or JD programme at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Singapore</strong> ManagementUniversity School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>; andc. every Qualified Person under <strong>the</strong> Legal Pr<strong>of</strong>ession Act who is aged 30 years or younger, asat 1 January 2013.Please note that only one entry per person is allowed.Persons related to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> (full -time and part -time staff, members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Senate, Committeesand Sub-committees) and Fountain Court (all barristers and support staff) are not eligible.3. Criteria: Entries will be judged on <strong>the</strong> following criteria (in no particular order): originality; criticalanalysis; succinctness; clarity; persuasiveness (where arguments are made) and pragmatism (in <strong>the</strong>case <strong>of</strong> suggestions or proposals).4. Format: Entries are to be written in English. Entries should not exceed 1300 words, includingreferences, footnotes, charts, tables, diagrams, and appendices. Entries must be submitted in Wordformat, double-spaced. Compliance with <strong>the</strong> style guide for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Singapore</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> Journal isrecommended but not required.5. Identification: Entries must be prefaced with a separate cover sheet (<strong>essay</strong> and cover sheet to beattached to <strong>the</strong> e-mail as separate documents) with <strong>the</strong> following information on <strong>the</strong> cover sheet:a. Deadline: The deadline for submission is 12 July 2013 at 4 pm. No entry will be accepted after <strong>the</strong>deadline. Prize: The Prize is an all-expense-paid 2-week internship at Fountain Court Chambers in London. Expensescovered: return (economy) airfare; accommodation in a self-contained flat or studio apartment; and a per diemallowance to cover reasonable living and work travel expenses in London. The Prize will be awarded on <strong>the</strong>recommendation <strong>of</strong> a Judging Panel. The internship will take place within one year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> announcement <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> winner, on dates to be agreed on between Fountain Court and <strong>the</strong> winner.8. Judging Panel: The Judging Panel will comprise members appointed by Fountain Court, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>,and <strong>the</strong> National University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Singapore</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> or <strong>Singapore</strong> Management University School <strong>of</strong><strong>Law</strong>. All decisions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Judging Panel and incidental decisions <strong>the</strong>reto, are final, and nocorrespondence will be entertained.9. Publication <strong>of</strong> Winning Entry: The winning <strong>essay</strong> may be considered for publication in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Singapore</strong><strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> Journal and on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>’s websites, subject to <strong>the</strong> usual editorial procedures.Fountain Court and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>’s decision on whe<strong>the</strong>r to publish <strong>the</strong> winning <strong>essay</strong> is final. FountainCourt and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> reserve <strong>the</strong> right to recommend non-winning entries to be published in <strong>the</strong><strong>Singapore</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> Journal.10. Sole Original Work, Copyright: By participating in <strong>the</strong> Essay Prize, <strong>the</strong> author warrants that <strong>the</strong> work isentirely <strong>the</strong> author's own. Joint submissions are not allowed. The following sentence is to be added at<strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>essay</strong>: "The author agrees to assign copyright in <strong>the</strong> work to Fountain Court Chambersand <strong>the</strong> <strong>Singapore</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>, which shall hold <strong>the</strong> copyright jointly."
