<strong>The</strong> <strong>Edinburgh</strong> <strong>Canal</strong> <strong>Strategy</strong><strong>The</strong> <strong>Canal</strong> HubsIn order to sustain the full waterway corridor the canalside at Ratho should not be further developed as amajor overnight visitor mooring destination to avoidthis distracting from Lochrin basin as the perceiveddestination and end to terminus to navigation in<strong>Edinburgh</strong>. Ratho should therefore be a place topause and enjoy en route to the <strong>City</strong>.PROJECTS<strong>The</strong>re are a number <strong>of</strong> opportunities for improvingthe canal at Ratho including:• Improve the access between the canal and thevillage, particularly along the western edge <strong>of</strong> thevillage and promote the creation <strong>of</strong> a pedestrian/ cycle loops along the canal• Improving the condition <strong>of</strong> existing mooringsand commercial <strong>of</strong>fer on the canal• A marina at Freelands Road with a mix <strong>of</strong>residential and commercial boats within newmarina• Improved links from the canal to the AdventureCentre, helping to promote the facility asaccessible by bike and foot.• Improving education, awareness, villageinformation, and links with existing communityuses, including the need for a public squarealong the canal and,• Siting canal mooring facilities at Wilkies Basinalongside the Motorway<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Edinburgh</strong> <strong>Council</strong> <strong>City</strong> Development December 2011 27
