<strong>Italy</strong> & <strong>Spain</strong>Short-term Faculty-led Study Away Program Summer Intersession May 21 - June 6, 2013Course Name: Art and Architecturein <strong>Italy</strong> and <strong>Spain</strong>Course Number: HID 302Credit Hours: 3 undergraduateCourse Overview & Objectives:<strong>Italy</strong> and <strong>Spain</strong> are renowned for theirhistorical impact on art and architecture,as well as for their contemporaryinfluence in all facets of design andculture.This study tour will enable students toexamine the relationship betweennatural landscapes and builtenvironments spanning four millennia in<strong>Italy</strong> and <strong>Spain</strong>.The Program Director andknowledgeable guides will lead tours of20 diverse cities and towns, providingbackground to enhance studentunderstanding of significantarchaeological and historical sites,design periods and styles, buildingmaterials, and the importance of historicpreservation.Students will have the opportunity to seeart, artifacts and structures dating fromclassical antiquity to the Renaissance andon to the present day. Students will alsogain insight into the interrelated, yetunique, cultures of the Italian andSpanish peoples.Program Fee: $4,100Program Fee Includes: Round-trip airfare,lodging, breakfasts, several additional meals,study tour transportation, ISIC card, Study Awaystudent fee, and basic medical insurance;separated costs not available.Program Fee Excludes: Passport, groundtransportation in to St. Louis, some meals,incidentals/misc personal expenses, and souvenirs.$601.44 MSU tuition for 3 hours ofundergraduate credit. Course Schedule & ItineraryThis program explores many dimensions ofItalian and Spanish design. While the primaryfocus is on art and architecture, the broadercontext—including geography, geology,climate, natural resources, ecology, history,religion, language, music, food, politics,economics and Mediterranean culture—also will be considered.First-hand experiences and observations inthe field will be augmented by pre-travellectures, class discussions, and student researchand reflection projects.PRE-TRAVEL CLASS MEETINGSTentative dates of mandatory meetings. Thesemeetings will be held in PCOB 319 from 4 p.m.to 6 p.m.March 12, 2013: Discuss itinerary, syllabus,and travel preparations. Assignment given:research paper on sites to be visited, topicsassigned. Due April 16, 2013.April 16, 2013: Student presentations ofassigned topics, including handouts for everystudent. Discussion of travel safety, packingtips, money, and a Q&A session.May 7, 2013: Hand out ISIC cards, finalitinerary distributed, domestic travelarrangements to St. Louis finalized, last minuteQ&A session.STUDY TOURItinerary subject to change.May 21, 2013: Departure from St Louis forVenice <strong>Italy</strong>.May 22, 2013: Arrive Venice airport andtransfer to Venice center and hotel BelleEpoque. Vaporetto pass will be issued. Timefor light independent sightseeing . A groupdinner will be included.May 23, 2013: Guided walking tour of SanMarco area and free afternoon to visit SanGiorgio Island.May 24, 2013: Museum day in Venice andoptional visits to Torcello and Burano. Travel bytrain to Florence to Hotel Corona d'Italia.May 25, 2013: Meet your guide Emma atSanta Maria Novella for a Renaissance walkingtour. Late afternoon visit to Academy of Art.May 26, 2013: A morning guided visit toUffizi Gallery, followed by an afternoon visit toSiena with guided walking tour. Group dinnerin Siena.May 27, 2013: Travel by train to Pisa. Meetyour private coach for brief stop at Pisa towerthen continue to Massa Carrara. There yourguide will take you into a working mountainquarry and visit to active shop. Continue bycoach to Tuscan town of Volterra and hotel SanLino.May 28, 2013: A walking tour of Volterra withvisit to working Alabaster shop. An olive oil andwine tasting event in the afternoon. An eveningvisit Fattoria Lischeto Organic Farm for a groupdinner.May 29, 2013: Travel by train to Rome. An IClocal representative will walk you to nearby HotelGioberti.May 30, 2013: The Vatican Museum and St.Peters Basilica with a local guide. Group lunch atMiscelleanea, followed by visit to Pantheon.May 31, 2013: A classical guided walking tourin the morning, followed by a trip to the Romantown Tivoli to see Villa d'Este and Hadian's Villa.June 1, 2013: Depart Rome for Barcelona. Takea panoramic coach tour of the city en route tohotel. Half day tour of the capital of Cataluña,featuring the Cathedral, Gothic Quarter, TownHall, Chamber of Deputies, and MontjuichMountain. Later, visit “El Pueblo Español” to seereplicas of <strong>Spain</strong>’s most typical villages.June 2, 2013: Tour along el Paseo de Gracia fora panoramic view of the city with specialemphasis on the unique and exciting architectureof Gaudí. La Casa Batlló, Casa Mila and thefamous Sagrada Familia are all viewed. A stop atEl Museum Gaudí. The culmination of the day is avisit to the Picasso Museum.June 3, 2013: Travel today on a half dayexcursion to the Monastery of Montserrat, whereyou will see the “Moreneta” - patron saint ofCataluña.June 4, 2013: Today a full day takes you toFiguera (Dali Museum) and Gerona.June 5, 2013: A free day is planned foradditional sightseeing and shopping inBarcelona. A special group dinner activity isplanned.June 6, 2013: Depart Barcelona for St Louis.POST-TRAVELJuly 2, 2013: Post-trip assignments due.Reflection papers and journals may be emailed ormailed.Course Credit & RequirementsStudents must fulfill the following academicrequirements:• Attend scheduled meetings before, during,and after the trip.• Attend all lectures, presentations, andrelevant educational excursions providedduring the trip.• Organize, write and present a research reporton an assigned topic.• Maintain a daily reflection journal during thetrip• Reflection paper and journals will beevaluated on depth and details. Includepictures, sketches, and other visuals.Application & Payment Procedures<strong>Missouri</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> students andothers who are approved by a ProgramDirector may apply. Instructions are included onthe program application.MSU Students: A non-refundable depositof $615 will be billed to your <strong>University</strong> accountupon application (deadline Feb. 1, 2013). Youwill receive a second billing on March 1, 2013and a final billing on April 5, 2013, for thebalance of the program fee ($3,485). MSU coursetuition ($601.44) will be billed to your <strong>University</strong>account and is due according to the universitypayment plan.Visiting Students: A non-refundabledeposit of $615 (check or money order) mustaccompany your application (deadline Feb. 1,2013). A check or money order for the balanceof the program fee ($3,485) will be due byApril 5, 2013. MSU course tuition ($601.44)will be billed to your <strong>University</strong> account and isdue according to the university payment plan.IN ORDER TO ENSURE PARTICIPATION INTHIS STUDY AWAY PROGRAM, THE ENTIREAMOUNT OF THE PROGRAM FEE MUST BERECEIVED BY MAY 10, 2013. Program participantsagree to a potential increase of up to 10% ifrates increase before or during travel.Cancellation & Refund Policies• Students who withdraw prior to April 8, 2013will receive a refund of fees paid, less the$615 deposit and any non-refundablepurchases made on his/her behalf.• If a student is forced to withdraw afterApril 8, 2013 or a bona fide medical reason,s/he will receive a refund of fees paid, less the$615 deposit and expenses. A certificate ofincapacitating illness or injury from a licensedphysician is required.• Students withdrawing voluntarily after April8, 2013, or withdrawing due to medicalreasons not protected under the feesrefund policy, receive no refund.• Once the program has started, no refundswill be issued under any circumstances.• All notifications of withdrawal must be madein writing and sent to the Program Directorand Director of Study Away <strong>Programs</strong> at theStudy Away Office, Jim D. Morris Center, Suite403. Non-payment of fees does not guaranteeautomatic withdrawal.• This program may be cancelled if enrollment isfewer than 7 participants. In this event, MSUstudents will receive a full refund.
