PROGRAMSTECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENTThe Herzing University Online Technology Management programsare designed for the tech-savvy individual who would like to developinterpersonal, business and management skills in order to act in aleadership role in a technological discipline (such as networking, graphicdesign, computer science, web development or drafting). Each programalso includes required general education courses.WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT?Companies are increasingly relying on technology for every aspect ofconducting business. As a result, IT departments are growing as companiesadd specialists in networking, programming, applications, and webdevelopment to their staff. To ensure the department runs smoothly andhas the tools, technology and personnel to address the organization’sneeds, a technology manager is needed to oversee it. This professionalmust have a solid understanding of computer science to delegate tasks andprojects and communicate with the IT staff. Students are taught the necessary business skills and academicknowledge to manage other computer science professionals.A minimum of 131 credit hours is required for graduation: 26 hours ofrequired and 13 hours of elective technology management courses, 36 hoursof required and 16 hours of elective computer science courses, 37 hours ofgeneral education courses, and 2 hours of personal development courses.BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENTWITH NO DECLARED MINOR OR CONCENTRATIONThis program allows for a greater number of transfer credits for those withprior college experience in technology-related subject matter. The student’sprior tech courses are integrated with business and management courses,preparing him or her for growth into a managerial role within the specialty.A minimum of 131 credit hours is required for graduation: 26 hours ofrequired and 9 hours of elective technology management courses, 37 hoursof required and 19 hours of elective classes in a minor, 37 hours of generaleducation courses, and 2 hours of personal development courses.A few of the required courses for either program:• Project Management • Business Systems Analysis• Internet Foundation • Object-Oriented Programming• Computer Networks • Database Concepts & ApplicationsSALARY SURVEYWhile incomes vary depending on experience, employer, and location, theaverage reported earnings for technology managers in May 2009 were$113,720. Graduates with some experiencein the field may also qualify for supervisory roles incustomer support departments and entry-level projectmanagement positions. Those with professionalexperience can explore opportunities such as:Chief Technology Officer - evaluate new technologiesto determine which would benefit the company, adviseupper management on benefits or drawbacks of thetechnology, and create & oversee implementationstrategies.Director of Information Technology or Director ofManagement Information Systems - manage the dailyoperations of computing resources for proper function,availability, reliability and security; manage the support/help desk and other department employees.Project Manager - oversee the budgets and schedules fortechnology-related projects (such as software or hardwareupgrades); work with internal and external customers,vendors/suppliers, consultants and trainers to coordinatethe development and implementation of projects.A master’s degree or higher may be required by someemployers; however, qualified upper-level technologymanagers are in short supply, and a candidate’sexperience may be valued more than a post-graduateeducation.
