Behaviour towards media<br />

When describing the behaviour of plastic towards media, a distinction is made between different interactions:<br />

- chemical reactions, i.e. decomposition of macromolecules and thus decrease in mechanical strength<br />

- stress cracking, i.e. crack formation already without external, mechanical load<br />

- moisture expansion, i.e. the medium penetrates the plastic in a reversible procedure, thus causing a<br />

softening effect<br />

The following table mainly contains details about media for which statements about materials in our range of<br />

products are available. The statements are guide values that correspond to the current state of knowledge and<br />

experience. They are, however, non-binding, also with regard to industrial property rights of third parties. The<br />

customer is not absolved from making careful application tests, especially as the effect of media on plastic depends<br />

very strongly on factors such as temperature, pressure, concentration of the medium, presentation of the result or<br />

type of plastic. The specifications therefore serve for initial orientation with regard to the chemical stability and<br />

cannot be applied to all application cases.<br />

In the case of statements concerning contact with foodstuffs, you should note that often only specific plastic types<br />

have the necessary certification for contact with foodstuffs.<br />

The individual statements mean:<br />

x = excellent stability, i.e. durability for years<br />

o = conditional stability, i.e. durability for weeks or months<br />

u = unstable; application cannot be recommended<br />

Between these three specifications, however, there are also trends identified by the specifications "x/o" or "o/u",<br />

which means that influencing factors such as temperature, concentration and pressure of the medium can displace<br />

the statements in direction "unstable".<br />
