SWIMARATHON 2013Congratulations to everyone involved in a tremendouslysuccessful Ashcombe 2013 Swimarathon.A clash with an important Surrey competition meant thatseveral candidates for the speed team were unavailable. This provided the opportunity for some younger swimmersto take part in this exciting race, encouraged all the waythrough by their older team-mates. Our Speed Teamcompleted an exhausting 97 laps! They did well to stayahead of Priory School who also swam 97 laps, but in athrilling finish our final swimmer was 10 metres ahead inthe water when the finishing hooter sounded.A fantastic effort from all our swimmers clocked up anoverall total of 430 laps of 50m – that’s more than 21 km.Even more impressive is the total amount of money raised:over £700 pledged so far which will all go to charities: £108to the Rotary Charity Fund and the remainder split betweenAshcombe’s Romania Fund and The Royal MarsdenHospital. This year saw the return after a few years’ rest of the Staffteam who held their own against the other teams (aided bythe very speedy Jenny Chaplin and Alex Pratt). Thank youto Mrs Cackett, Mrs Beggs, Mr Neumann and Mr Bowie.House-points were awarded for participation andfund-raising in each year group. An impressive effort was made by Tudor house, whoprovided the most swimmers, swam the furthest (118 laps)and pledged the most money. A big thank you to all whotook part.CENTRAL SURREY DISTRICTATHLETICS 2013On 16th May, The Ashcombe School took 51 studentsfrom Years 8, 9 & 10 to compete in the Central SurreyDistrict Athletics at Kingsmeadow. 17 schools took partand we had great successes: Under 15 girls (5th), Under17 Girls (7th), Under 15 Boys (6th) and Under 17 Boys(5th). Special mention must go to Munroe Ritchie whocame 1st in the Shot and who set a new district recordof 37.09m, eclipsing the existing record of 29.95m.12 of these students have been selected to represent theCentral Surrey District at the Surrey SchoolsChampionships on Saturday 8th June. Success at thiscompetition enables students to represent Surrey at theprestigious English Schools Championships that aretelevised on Sky Sports. The Ashcombe School havehigh hopes for Year 10 Student Munroe Ritchie who isranked 5th in the UK in the Inter Boys Hammer with apersonal best throw of 56.61.U16 GIRLS BASKETBALLY11 Girls Basketball team won their Regional game of theNational Schools competition against Maiden Erlegh,Reading (62-18) and so reached the Zonal rounds. Theyplayed and beat Holy Trinity (67-33) and The MaynardSchool (58-25), and qualified for the final four inNottingham for the third year in a row!The girls played St Angelas Ursuline School (East London)in the semi-final. They led after the first quarter (11-5) thenlost the subsequent two quarters (9-21 & 6-17), and wonthe last quarter (16-11). Coming back to win the finalquarter after a dip in the middle two quarters really showsthe strength of character of the girls. Unfortunately theylost the match 54-42 overall, but achieving such a highscore against such strong opposition was a great feat - theiropponents included one England international, 3 Haringeyplayers (who were national league champions this year) andthe Most Valued Player in the 2013 League. In the play offfor third place the girls played St Peters RC High Schooland won 68-52.We are very proud of all the girls have achieved over thepast few years, through hard work and dedication. Theyhave been excellent ambassadors for the school and MissDye has really enjoyed working this motivated and talentedgroup of individuals.
