YEAR 9 NEWSThe Spring term was a busy one for Year 9, with difficultdecisions to be made in selecting options choices forGCSEs. Students have worked hard with their tutors,carefully picking the subjects they would like to studynext year. They have also enjoyed some more unusualevents, with students developing teamwork skills in theproduction of costumes for a newspaper fashion show,and a thoroughly enjoyable trip to Guildford Spectrumto go ice skating.CHEMISTRY OLYMPIADMr Grant entered the school in the Chemistry Olympiadfor the first time this year. We are very pleased with theoutcome, especially as most of the competitors are fromindependent schools. James Fox did tremendously wellreceiving a Gold award which put him in the top 7.1%of the nationwide competitors. He registeredhis own business at 15 and is a recognised chocolatier(apparently the world’s youngest!). He is pictured herewith Miss Dye after receiving his award. There is also abook being written about chocolatiers and he isfeaturing in it! Danesh has also recently attended a tradefair at the Excel Centre to promote his ‘Brocks Chocks’business. MAGISTRATES’ COMPETITIONMrs Chalmers and Mr Tunmore took thirteen Year 8 and 9 pupilsto Redhill Magistrates’ Court one Saturday in March, to competein the Mock Trial Competition against eight other schools fromSurrey and Sussex. The team worked very hard in the precedingfour months, rehearsing their roles in preparation for defendingand prosecuting a ‘mock trial’. We were delighted that theirefforts were rewarded, with Isaac Wheatley winning an individualprize for his role as the court usher, and the team being placedfirst in Surrey and second overall. As such they won £150 for theschool, the Surrey Shield, and qualified for the Regional Finals inKent in May.Due to a last minute change of the draw at the Regional Finals ofthe Mock Trial Magistrates competition in Chatham on Saturday11th May, the Ashcombe students had to defend a different casefrom the one they had prepared for. Despite the initial shock, thewhole team rose to the challenge and performed fantastically, andboth the defence and prosecution teams won their cases and beatthe opposing school. The team narrowly missed first place andthus going onto the national finals but they should be incrediblyproud of their achievement. This result was particularly pleasingconsidering students as young as 12 were competing in what isnormally a competition for Year 9 students. All students willreceive a certificate for their achievement, and will be showcasingtheir legal talents in a forthcoming assembly.
