CHARITIES WEEK 2013Charities Week has always been a highly anticipated eventat The Ashcombe, and Charities Week 2013 certainlyproved no exception. From the 25th February – 1st March,a variety of performances took place at lunchtime in themain hall, bringing a rush of pupils to the doors, all in hopeof getting the best spot to watch the forthcoming show.show’s winners ‘Listed’ made a brilliant finish. Adding tothe fun of this year’s Charities Week was the dressing up ofthe 6th Formers. The week brought a variety of themes forfancy dress, including pyjama/onesie day and Disney day.As well as providing excitement for pupils, Charities Week2013 raised a total of £2611.40 for the well-deservingcauses Ashcombe are committed to helping. Studentdedication to making this form of fundraising successfulwas exceptional, and Charities Week 2013 once againproved a great week for everyone at The Ashcombe.Starting the week off was ‘Got to Dance’, which was a greatopportunity for all the budding dancers at the Ashcombeto show off their skills. There was a broad range ofperformances, and everyone - from Year 7 all the way to6th Form - was undoubtedly entertained.Tuesday’s Lower School Talent Show similarly proved a hitwith all the pupils, especially Ellis and his guitar-playingaccompaniment, who provoked a roar for an encore fromthe audience. Wednesday’s performances most definitelystand out as some of the most memorable and outrageous,including the male teachers’ enactment of a Spice Girlsmelody in Teachers Got Talent! Continuing the trend ofgreat shows was Thursday’s Fashion Show, whichincorporated a large dance performance into a successfulfashion show where pupils got the chance to flaunt a rangeof clothes. Concluding the week was the Upper SchoolTalent Show, which has repeatedly been a great finale overthe years. The performances didn’t fail to impress and theRETRO SPORTS DAYYear 11s marked their final Whole School Tutor Periodby holding a ‘retro sports day’. Dressed in florescentand 80s style ‘retro’ gear, over 200 pupils took part inevents such as the egg and spoon race, the sack race andthe three-legged race. It was a great success and enjoyedby all. The event was won by Mr Marshman’s tutorgroup, 11XS..
YEAR 11 LEAVERS BALLOn Thursday 9th May, Year 11 Ashcombe studentsgathered at Wotton House to celebrate the end of their timeat the school before their GCSE exams began. The arrivalof students at the venue is always a much enjoyed occasion,with many parents staying to watch the means by whichthe pupils arrive. This year was certainly one for variety,from tanks to space hoppers and mobility scooters! It wasa fantastic evening and the pupils really enjoyed themselvesin spite of the rain and cold wind. The Year 11 teachers saidhow lovely it was to see the students looking so grown-upand smartly dressed - such a transformation from the youngYear 7s who arrived at the school 5 years ago. We wishthem the best of luck in their forthcoming exams.YEAR 10 BIG BREAKFASTOn 17th April, pupils in Year 10 took part in an eventcalled ‘The Big Breakfast’ to raise money for theTeenage Cancer Trust, an organisation which TheAshcombe School has been supporting for a number ofyears. 240 pupils met to enjoy a cooked or continentalbreakfast which raised £350 for the Teenage CancerTrust. A further £650 of the money raised at TheAshcombe's recent Charities Week brought the totalto £1000.We were delighted to welcome Nigel Revell, theDirector of Education and Advocacy at The TeenageCancer Trust to the school on Tuesday 14th May so thatwe could present the cheque to him. During his visit tothe school he was able to raise awareness of canceramongst teenagers and give the year group details ofhow their money would be spent.The cheque was presented by Year 10 charity committeemembers.
