Perhapsit was the superior hitting but there mayjust have been an extra dose of good karmaat Camden Yards on June 14th.Because of the generosity of the OriolesFoundation, cancer survivors from<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Joseph</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>’s CancerInstitute were treated to a wonderfulday at the ballpark. The Foundation hasa longstanding relationship with MarkKrasna, M.D., medical director of TheCancer Institute. For the past three yearsthe Orioles have sponsored <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Joseph</strong>’sSurvivor’s Day, an event that is about fun,family and friends, not disease. Twentysixsuites filled with food, beverages andt-shirts, accommodated 650 guests thatincluded cancer survivors, their guests andmedical center caregivers. Two survivorshad the honor of throwing the first pitches.Michael Schultz, M.D., medical directorof The Breast <strong>Center</strong> at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Joseph</strong> <strong>Medical</strong><strong>Center</strong> Cancer Institute, says the dayis always emotion packed, both for thepatients and the medical staff. “So manypatients are used to seeing their physicianand support staff in a clinical setting,where their illness is paramount. To beS U RV I V O R ’ S D AYat this wonderful event, where everyoneis celebrating their health, is a beautifulthing to see.” Adds Krasna, “Many of thepatients are running from suite to suite,greeting and hugging each other. This year’s EmployeeEvents proceeds went to The Orthopaedic Fundfor Nursing Excellence. As evidence of the events’popularity, over 300 people came to the <strong>St</strong>. Patrick’sDay party and 100 golfers turned out at Oakmont,raising nearly $13,000!“It doesn’t matter whether we’re on the golf course ordancing to Irish music; our employees always get in thespirit of the occasion. People call us months in advanceto make sure they get the events on their calendars,”comments Bruchalski. Adds Castellucci, “It’s great tosee different departments support each other. Woodconcludes, “The help we get from employees is alwaysamazing.
