EMS NewsEMS Website www.euro-math-soc.euUpgradedMartin Raussen (Aalborg University, Denmark), EMS Vice-President and Content Administrator of the EMS WebsiteHistoryThe EMS website www.euro-math-soc.eu, based at theoffice in Helsinki, went online in 2008. Before it was established, the EMS participated in the multi-purpose sitewww.emis.de, resulting in a reasonably complicated informationflow. With our new independent website, it becameeasier to publish relevant information quickly andto use it for many different purposes.and corporate EMS members. Members can pay their feesonline through the site; new members can register online.Last but not least, the site collects and archives informationabout EMS activities, mainly for internal purposes.New challengesWhile all this had already been achieved, the technicalfacilities and the demands of users have developedquickly in recent years. Let me single out two particularlyimportant trends. Firstly, mobile devices with smallscreens (iPads, iPhones, etc.) have become more andmore popular; the EMS website was very difficult to readand to use on these platforms. Secondly, hackers try touse weak spots on all sorts of websites for their purposes,so far only with annoying and not disastrous effects forthe EMS.The EMS website is underpinned by a DRUPALbased content management system (CMS), organising anever growing database. This CMS had been basically unchangedsince it was built and put into use. It has becomeincreasingly important to update the site’s managementand to bring it up to date in order to allow a better serviceto users and make it less vulnerable to attacks.DevelopmentIn the Autumn of 2013, the EMS Executive Committeedecided to commission a development project witha DRUPAL expert based in Scotland. After a thoroughinvestigation of the many different uses and users of thewebsite, he developed a “wiring” of the EMS websitefrom scratch in the latest version of DRUPAL, which isquite different from the previous one. Many aimsIn fact, the EMS website has many different types of userand serves many different purposes. First of all, it is conceivedas a service to the EMS membership (individualsand corporate) and to the mathematical communityat large: to find information about interesting news andevents, to post and to look for mathematical jobs, to postand to look for forthcoming conferences, to search forbook reviews, etc. The EMS leadership, management andthe EMS committees use the website to inform othersabout their work. Another important feature is the membershipdatabase containing information about individualNew featuresApart from allowing the site to adapt to various forms of(in particular mobile) devices and making it less vulnerableto attacks, several other goals were set, among themthe following: information added to the website will bemuch better structured (by additional tags) in order tomake it easier to filter and to search for relevant information;EMS committees will be able to handle theirown sub-sites autonomously under the same framework, partly for the public and partly for internal use that onlycommittee members can access; users who wish to uploadinformation will need to log on (using a simple procedure)in order to make abuse more difficult; users willbe able to classify their main mathematical interests andwill then be offered news about mathematical events, conferences, jobs and book reviews, etc., sorting underthe same “tag”; and it will be easier to start online discussionson the site under suitable moderation.6 EMS Newsletter December 2014
EMS NewsTransitionOn 29 June, in the midst of the EMS Council Meeting inDonostia, the newly designed website www.euro-mathsoc.euwent online and replaced the previous one. Users(including this author) have to get used to the new designand the new options. Less is visible directly on the frontpage; you have to click a few times before you find whatyou are interested in. The biggest change for users is thatyou now need to log into a user account if you wish tocomment on a particular item or if you wish to submit anews article, event, job posting or book review. Such submissionsare still subject to manual review by EMS editorsbut it does allow contributors to be cross-referenced.Registration is straightforward, requiring name and emailaddress; the email address is never disclosed to the publicnor will it be passed on to any third party. After filling ina personal page, specific information is offered relatedto the main mathematical interest areas specified underthe menu point “Interests”. For more information and alink to a login page, go to http://www.euro-math-soc.eu/news/14/06/28/changes-ems-website.Experiences? Problems? It cannot be expected that a major operation like thisone can be executed without problems and bugs. Everybodywill have to get used to the new look and will needto learn how to make use of new ways of handling theinformation flow and how to profit from new features.Website users are encouraged to report their experiencesand any problems they may encounter to the EMS officeat ems-office@helsinki.fi – please use EMS web as thesubject line.Call for ApplicationsEMS Schools in Applied Mathematics(ESSAM)Jose Antonio Carrillo (Imperial College London, UK)Currently, four series of summer schools in applied mathematicstake place every year under the EMS banner.Their existence and organisation are part of the activitiesof the EMS Applied Mathematics Committee. The EMSconsiders as a priority the goal that the schools maintaina high scientific level and focus on relevant topics of impact. The EMS helps these schools in fundraising and, inparticular, contributes toward the participation of youngresearchers from European and Mediterranean countries.Initially, there was a school organised by IMPAN inBedlewo and a school organised by CIME taking placeevery year. In 2010, a summer school in biomathematicsjoined ESSAM, organised every year by the ESMTB(European Society for Mathematical and Theoretical Biology). The last ESSAM school was created in 2011: asummer school in mathematical finance, organised by theInstitut Louis Bachelier. The programme committee of each organising institutionincorporates a representative of the EMS AppliedMathematics Committee for the planning of futureschools and to certify their scientific level and the fulfilmentof EMS requirements. If you want to create such a series or you are in chargeof an existing one and you want to become part of theESSAM schools, please send a message to StéphaneCordier at stephane.cordier@math.cnrs.fr.List of ESSAM 2014 schools:- EMS-ESMTB Summer School: “Dynamics of infectiousdiseases”.- IME-EMS Summer School in Applied Mathematics:“Centralized and Distributed Multi-agent Optimization:Models and Algorithms” (funded by the EMS).- Seventh European Summer School in Financial Mathematics.- EMS School on Stochastic Analysis with applicationsin biology, finance and physics (funded by the EMS).You can find more information about these schools andtheir guidelines at the EMS Applied Committee’s webpage:http://www.euro-math-soc.eu/ems-summer-schoolsapplied-mathematics-essam.EMS Newsletter December 2014 7
