John Cage perform<strong>in</strong>g Improvisation l—Child of Tree or Branches (1975). It consisted of<br />

play<strong>in</strong>g on cacti <strong>and</strong> plant materials that had been connected with contact microphones.<br />

“My reason for improvis<strong>in</strong>g on them,” expla<strong>in</strong>ed Cage, “is because the <strong>in</strong>struments are so<br />

unknown that as you explore, say the sp<strong>in</strong>es of a cactus, you’re not really deal<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

your memory or your taste. You’re explor<strong>in</strong>g.” Used with permission of the John Cage<br />

I have tried to write a book comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a rich history of technical <strong>in</strong>vention<br />

with parallel ideas formulated <strong>in</strong> experimental music. In a world where<br />

technology now <strong>in</strong>filtrates every nuance of our existence, one must remember<br />

that the arts succeed where computers fail <strong>in</strong> elevat<strong>in</strong>g the human be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> us all.<br />

The development of electronic music—itself a by-product of technology—<br />

exemplifies everyth<strong>in</strong>g about be<strong>in</strong>g human that the arts can offer.
