Section 17: DISCUSSION OF PUBLISHED WORK INSECURE DEPENDABLE DATA MANAGEMENT (1985 – 2010)17.1 INTRODUCTIONThis section consists of some of my papers that have made an impact in secure dependable datamanagement. The specific sub-areas are the following: Multilevel Secure Data Management Systems;Dependable Data Management Systems; Semantic Web, Web Services and Security; and Data Mining forMalware Detection. A summary of each of these sub-areas is given below. More details are given in theSections 17.2, 17.3, 17.4, 17.5 and 17.6.Multilevel Secure Data Management Systems: As stated in Section 3, my research in secure dependabledata management began in 1985. My initial focus was in multilevel secure database systems. In particular,I examined multilevel security for relational database systems, distributed database systems and objectdatabase systems. In addition, during this time I also conducted research on the inference problem. Myresearch in this area has resulted in several papers and three US patents. The research was also transferredto operational programs and commercial products.Dependable Data Management Systems: In the early 1990s, I started my research in real-time datamanagement systems and later integrated this research with my work in secure data management.Integrating security and real-time systems was a new concept at that time. This research was transferred toAir Force programs such as AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System).Semantic Web, Web Services and Security: In 2000, I started my research in security for semantic weband web services. First I examined security for XML (eXtensible Markup Language) and then designedand developed inference controllers based on RDF (Resource Description Framework). In addition, Iexamined access control and information flow models for web services.Data Mining for Malware Detection: My recent research has also included designing and applying datamining techniques for malware detection. In particular, I have developed data mining tools for bufferoverflow management and intrusion detection. I have also developed stream mining techniques fordetecting novel classes.The organization of this section is as follows. Section 17.2 describes my research in secure datamanagement. Section 17.3 describes my research in dependable real-time data management. Section 17.4describes my research in secure semantic web and web services. Section 17.5 describes my research indata mining for malware detection. Section 17.6 discusses my future work in secure data management.17.2 MULTILEVEL SECURE DATA MANAGEMENT SYSTEMSI began my research on multilevel secure data management systems in 1985 and this research continueduntil the mid 1990s. I describe eleven of my papers on this topic.Secure Relational Data Management: My early research in the mid to late 1980s was on the design anddevelopment of a prominent system called Lock Data Views (LDV). Paper #1 (IEEE Transactions onKnowledge and Data Engineering) in this section describes the design of this system. LDV was one of thefirst two high assurance secure data management systems developed and was designed to meet the A1assurance level with respect to the Orange book (that is, the Trusted Computer Systems Evaluationcriteria). It’s unique in that it is designed to operate on Lock operating system which is an A1 system andhas three pipelines designed to enforce non-interference properties. The security policy was based on theBell and LaPadula model as well as the non-interference model. Additional policies based on content andcontext were introduced for the first time in a multilevel environment. In addition, a multilevel relationaldata model was developed. We also handled the notion of polyinstantiation where multiple users can havedifferent views of the same entity and developed a theory of multilevel relational data model. Utilizingthis data model, we then developed designs of three major modules: the query processor, the updateprocessor and the metadata manager. This paper has been widely cited and some of the ideas were adoptedin the four commercial secure relational data management systems that were being developed in the late101
