Wednesday, June 5, 2013 wilsontimes.com 3AScholarships: Campbell Presidential ScholarshipCollege: Campbell UniversityParents: Son of Jimmy Sharpe and Pamela Holley-SharpeMost Influential Teacher: Amber Godwin (APU.S. History)Statement about Teacher: Amber Godwin possessessuch a passion for both her job as a historyteacher and for her students and colleaguesthat it can be felt by all those who surround her.Her positive attitude and ability to relate withthe student population makes students want tolisten attentively to her every word. Throughoutthe course of her class Ms. Godwin providesmany ample opportunities for her students tolearn without having to constantly barrage themwith notes. The outlines and section-by-sectionreviews that she requires her students to do foreach chapter worked brilliantly to condense eventhe most complex of a chapter’s points down sothat they were able to be easily understood. Despiteher constantly busy schedule, if someonewas unable to understand a piece of informationor an event she was more than willing to helpexplain it no matter the time of day or the day ofthe week.Although I was a student in her AdvancedPlacement U.S. History class, I, like a few othersin the room, lacked a sufficient background inwriting formal essays. Upon learning this, Ms.Godwin dedicated a copious amount of classtime and before and after school hours givingwriting seminars to any student who needed it.In addition to these seminars she was alwayswilling to read over an essay for us and provideadvice on where it could be improved. With thediligent help of Ms. Godwin, I was able to improvemy writing skills to the point where not onlywas I able to score a 4 on the A.P. United StatesHistory exam, but I also witnessed significantincreases on my essay grades in other classes. In the realm of education, students rely heavilyon teachers to not only succeed but to reach theirtrue potential. I am positive that if we had moreteachers like Ms. Amber Godwin teaching, thenmore students would have an intense love ofboth learning and school.Shayla EvansLeadership Positions: SGA Vice President, BruinettesService Club President, National HonorSociety TreasurerSchool Activities: Marching and SymphonicBand, AVID Tutor, Varsity Basketball, FreshmanMentoring Program, Yearbook Staff, NationalHonor SocietyAwards Received: 2012 Commencement JuniorMarshal, Wilson Education Partnership 4.0 AcademicChampion (4 years), Spanish I Award,Team Above Self Award (Basketball), N.C. 4.0Scholar.Scholarships: State Employees Credit UnionPeople Helping People Scholarship, 1973 TrojanPlus Scholarship, Darden Alumni ScholarshipCollege: Elizabeth City State UniversityParents: Daughter of Sharon Evans of Wilsonand Russell Mercer of Rocky MountMost Influential Teacher: Amber Godwin (A.P.U.S. History)Statement about Teacher: Ms. Godwin is myfavorite teacher because she is an inspirationalteacher, and she is the reason I want to pursuea career in teaching.
