Wednesday, June 5, 2013 wilsontimes.com 3AScholarships: Campbell Presidential ScholarshipCollege: Campbell UniversityParents: Son of Jimmy Sharpe and Pamela Holley-SharpeMost Influential Teacher: Amber Godwin (APU.S. History)Statement about Teacher: Amber Godwin possessessuch a passion for both her job as a historyteacher and for her students and colleaguesthat it can be felt by all those who surround her.Her positive attitude and ability to relate withthe student population makes students want tolisten attentively to her every word. Throughoutthe course of her class Ms. Godwin providesmany ample opportunities for her students tolearn without having to constantly barrage themwith notes. The outlines and section-by-sectionreviews that she requires her students to do foreach chapter worked brilliantly to condense eventhe most complex of a chapter’s points down sothat they were able to be easily understood. Despiteher constantly busy schedule, if someonewas unable to understand a piece of informationor an event she was more than willing to helpexplain it no matter the time of day or the day ofthe week.Although I was a student in her AdvancedPlacement U.S. History class, I, like a few othersin the room, lacked a sufficient background inwriting formal essays. Upon learning this, Ms.Godwin dedicated a copious amount of classtime and before and after school hours givingwriting seminars to any student who needed it.In addition to these seminars she was alwayswilling to read over an essay for us and provideadvice on where it could be improved. With thediligent help of Ms. Godwin, I was able to improvemy writing skills to the point where not onlywas I able to score a 4 on the A.P. United StatesHistory exam, but I also witnessed significantincreases on my essay grades in other classes. In the realm of education, students rely heavilyon teachers to not only succeed but to reach theirtrue potential. I am positive that if we had moreteachers like Ms. Amber Godwin teaching, thenmore students would have an intense love ofboth learning and school.Shayla EvansLeadership Positions: SGA Vice President, BruinettesService Club President, National HonorSociety TreasurerSchool Activities: Marching and SymphonicBand, AVID Tutor, Varsity Basketball, FreshmanMentoring Program, Yearbook Staff, NationalHonor SocietyAwards Received: 2012 Commencement JuniorMarshal, Wilson Education Partnership 4.0 AcademicChampion (4 years), Spanish I Award,Team Above Self Award (Basketball), N.C. 4.0Scholar.Scholarships: State Employees Credit UnionPeople Helping People Scholarship, 1973 TrojanPlus Scholarship, Darden Alumni ScholarshipCollege: Elizabeth City State UniversityParents: Daughter of Sharon Evans of Wilsonand Russell Mercer of Rocky MountMost Influential Teacher: Amber Godwin (A.P.U.S. History)Statement about Teacher: Ms. Godwin is myfavorite teacher because she is an inspirationalteacher, and she is the reason I want to pursuea career in teaching. For manystudents, college is their first taste of independence. Some embrace that newfoundfreedom, while others grow homesick andlong for the company of their immediatefamily. But as the school year progresses, the majority of first-year college studentsadapt to life on campus and grow to lovetheir new surroundings.Once students have comfortably adaptedto their new lives, many seek opportunitiesto become more actively involvedin life on campus. College clubs and organizationsare a great way to do just that, providing a host of benefits that furtherenhances college life.Meet peopleJoining a student club or organizationis a great way for college studentsto meet fellow students, professors andother people of note on campus. This isespecially beneficial for first-year collegestudents, whose social circle mayotherwise be limited to roommates orfellow residents of their dormitories.Joining a club or student organizationcan quickly expand that social circleto include people who share your interestsand not just your dorm assignment.Find a majorMany first-year college students areunsure about a course of study, enrollingas an undeclared. Such studentscan benefit from joining clubs or studentorganizations that pique theirinterests. For example, joining an oncampusdebate club might help youdiscover a passion for debate, whichcan lead down a path to becoming alawyer. Students who enroll in collegewithout declaring a major may havethe most to gain by joining a club ororganization.Boost your GpaJoining a club or student organizationalso may make you a better student. That’s especially likely for studentswho join a club or organizationthat’s aligned with their field of study.A club or organization can help youapply lessons from the classroom inreal-world situations, improving yourgrasp of certain concepts. In addition, your fellow club members may makegreat teachers, especially those whoare ahead of you and have taken manyof the same classes you’re now takingor can expect to take down the road.Such students can be invaluable resources, helping explain concepts andoffering advice as to which courses totake and which professors they prefer.Improve your overall experienceEven if a student club or organizationhas nothing to do with your studiesor your future career, signing up is agreat way to improve your overall collegeexperience. You’re liable to createmore memories, make more friendsand get the most out of your time oncampus, which many college seniorswill tell you is going to be gone beforeyou know it. Take advantage of all ofthe opportunities your college or universityoffers, and you will likely oneday look back and be glad you madethe most of your time on campus.
