Program Learning OutcomesAt the completion of the IELP program, students will be able to:• Demonstrate orally and in writing the ability to think critically bybringing together evidence in support of an argument;• Exemplify efficient writing and reading abilities by producing andunderstanding multiple diverse perspectives in a set framework;• Demonstrate ideas by speaking extemporaneously in a social or academic environment;• Demonstrate the ability to learn new words and recognize parts of speech in various word forms;• Respond to questions that call for reasoned analysis of given information.نتائج البرنامج التعليميةعند االنتهاء من برنامج اللغة االنجليزية المكثف،‏ سوف يتمكن الطلبة من:‏‏•إثبات القدرة شفويا وكتابيا على التفكير النقدي عن طريق الجمع بين األدلة لدعم الحجة‏•تجسيد كفاءة وقدرات القراءة الكتابة من خالل إنتاج وفهم وجهات نظر متنوعة متعددة في إطار مجموعة‏•إظهار وإثبات أفكار عن طريق التحدث شفهيا في بيئة اجتماعية أو أكاديمية‏•إظهار القدرة على تعلم كلمات جديدة وفهم مقاطع باللغة اإلنجليزية في أشكال مختلفة للكلمات‏•الرد على األسئلة التي تستدعي التحليل المتروي للمعلومات المعطاة.‏Program StructureThere are four levels of instruction: IELP 096 (basic), IELP 097 (low intermediate),IELP 098 (high intermediate), and IELP 099 (advanced). Students in each level studyin instructor-guided classes for four hours daily, Sunday through Thursday. Each course isapproximately fifteen weeks in Fall and Spring, and approximately seven weeks in SummerI and Summer II. Each course also develops three skill sets: Reading/Vocabulary, Listening/Speaking, and Writing/Grammar. Course DescriptionsIELP 096 BASICIntensive EnglishPrerequisite: Placement by ACCUPLACERor with permission of Program Coordinator.Limited English is assumed.IELP 096 is for high beginning non-native speakersof English who have some basic understandingof English. This course builds a foundation ofacademic English in speaking, reading, writing,grammar and listening. Students develop theirreading skills, build their vocabulary, learnto write grammatically correct sentences,and write simple paragraphs. Class activitiesinclude oral and written communicativetasks, short presentations, and listening andtaking notes from simple lectures. Studentsalso develop their overall competence inacademic learning skills, and computer use.It is assumed that an incoming student is able to:• respond appropriately to simpleclassroom commands, instructionalexplanations, and questions;• write simple grammaticallycorrect sentences in responsesto oral or written cues;• read, understand, discuss, andanswer questions about simplelevel appropriate texts; and,• ask and answer questions.IELP 097 Low IntermediateIntensive EnglishPrerequisite: IELP 096 with a grade ofP+/P or placement by Accuplacer TMIELP 097 is for low intermediate non-nativespeakers of English. This course expands existingproficiency in speaking, writing, reading, grammar,and listening. It also further develops academiclearning skills of students whose goal is toenter the university. Students will build theirvocabulary, learn academic reading strategies,and write complex, well-developed paragraphsusing grammatically correct sentences. Thestudents will participate in group discussionsand give informal presentations. In writingthey will learn to support opinions by givingreasons and explanations. Class activitiesinclude grammar review and expansion, oraland written communicative tasks, listening tolectures, doing projects, and using computers.It is assumed that an incoming student is able to:• understand and respond appropriatelyto classroom instruction,questions, and directions;• write a simple paragraph (9-12 sentences)containing supporting details;• express opinions on various topicsboth orally and in writing;• use different strategies to read andunderstand level-appropriate academictexts and academic vocabulary; and,• listen to, take notes on, discuss, and answerquestions about level appropriate lectures

Course DescriptionsIELP 098 High IntermediateIntensive EnglishPrerequisite: IELP 097 with a grade ofP+/P or placement by Accuplacer TMIELP 098 is for high intermediate non-nativespeakers of English, This course expands on preexistingproficiency in speaking, writing, reading,grammar, and listening. It also further developsthe academic skills of students whose goal is toenter the university. At this level, students listento and take notes on more complex lectures.They also participate in more challengingspeaking activities such as giving formalpresentations and discussing causes, effects,and solutions to problems. They continue tobuild their vocabulary, acquire advanced readingstrategies, and review and expand grammarknowledge and skills. They write multi-paragraphessays demonstrating mature thought. Thiscourse places more emphasis on communicativetasks, projects, and computer-based learning.It is assumed that an incoming student is able to:• write different types of complexparagraphs developing multiple ideasthat support the topic sentence andare restated in the conclusion;• use various strategies to read,understand, and answer questionsabout level-appropriate academic textsand build academic vocabulary;• speak on given topics for short periodsand deliver short prepared speeches; and,• listen to, take notes on, discuss, and answerquestions about level appropriate lectures.IELP 099 AdvancedIntensive EnglishPrerequisite: IELP 098 with a grade ofP+/P or placement by Accuplacer TMIELP 099 is for advanced non-native Englishspeakers whose goal is to study at the universityThis course is focused on further developingthe students’ English and academic skills neededto succeed in university classes. It focuses onwriting essays using sophisticated sentencestructure in coherent, well-developed paragraphs.Students will learn to construct an outline,structure an essay, create a thesis statement,provide specific and relevant support, usetransitions, and proofread for accuracy. IELP099 also develops listening and speaking skillsuseful in university classes, such as note-takingfrom lectures, writing reports, and makingformal presentations. It assists the students indeveloping their university level academic Englishvocabulary and reading strategies to increasetheir reading speed and comprehension.It is assumed that an incoming student is able to:• write different types of essays with clearthesis statements that use parallel structure,introduce the content of body paragraphs,and are restated in a concluding statement;• use various strategies to read,understand, and answer questionsabout level-appropriate academic textsand develop academic vocabulary;• speak on given topics for short periodsand deliver short prepared speeches; and,• listen to, take notes on, discuss, and answerquestions about level appropriate lectures

Admissions Requirements• A completed Application for Undergraduate Admission Form• Non-refundable application fee of AED 200• Students are required to take the university English entrance exam Accuplacer TM , to determinetheir level of English• 2 passport-size photographs and passport photocopyStudents who wish to pursue a degree at AUD upon completion of the IELP program have to submitall necessary documents for review by the Admissions Committee.
