According todata collected in this study, a majority of women, schoolchildren and womenliving with a disability reduce their activities when they have their periods, in partbecause of social and religious beliefs and ongoing social norms, and also becauseof the condition of the sanitary infrastructure.The infrastructure issue, therefore, has an impact on the participation of womenand girls in social, economic and cultural activities.This section aims to describe the condition of the infrastructure in the region.Toilet in the public school Tierno Salif Sidibe (578 students in 2014-2015) in Kedougou.Built in 1981,​they are closed due to their bad state. Students therefore leave school to use a toilet.Analysis of the impact of menstruation on the living conditions of women and girlsThe condition of infrastructure in the study areaTwelve multi-family dwellings, three markets, four schools, one health centre and oneprison were visited. Water and sanitation infrastructure was observed in accordancewith the protocol set down in the observation sheets and photos were taken.The aim was to observe the condition of the infrastructure, to note if it was equippedwith separate toilets for men and women and handwashing equipment, and if it hadsoap, water and other hygiene equipment.For the multi-family dwellings, the task was to observe the relative positions of thewashtub and the toilets, the type of toilets, and to ask if girls and women had access tothe toilets. The task also included checking the drying arrangements.51
