Flying High With United
Been up in the air lately? – as in a flight in a
jet airliner? If so, you might be interested in a bit a
history. A new book by Bob Taylor, titled, “The Man
Aviation History Almost Forgot,” tells of the role a
onetime Lincoln resident played in helping Orville
and Wilbur Wright make mankind’s first powered
aircraft flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C. December 17,
1903.
What Lincoln connection? Well, the Wrights’
mechanic was Charles E “Charlie” Taylor who
worked for a time in the bindery of the ebraska
State Journal, predecessor to the Lincoln Journal
Star. The Wrights’ first engine was not powerful
enough, so Charlie, years after leaving Lincoln, was
called upon to rebuild it. His mechanical skills paid
off for that successful first powered flight of 852 feet!
Here we are as United Methodists. The United
name carried over when the Methodists and the
Evangelical United Brethren merged. And guess
what! Orville and Wilbur Wright were the sons of a
bishop of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ.
United flies high in the skies and in worldwide ministries.
Welcome aboard!
