CORNWALL OPEN TARGET RIFLE AND INTER COUNTIES CHALLENGEAT MILLPOOL RANGE BODMIN ON 26 & 27 AUGUST 2006by Adrian PettmanIt was a pleasant change to start the 2006 meetingon time without having to wait for the usual hillmist to clear. A total of 53 firers from all over thecountry quickly settled down and began shootingthe first warm up event at 300 yards - the winner herewas Andrew Wilde with a cool 50.8, Tony Mitchellfollowing closely on 50.7. There then came a shooton metric targets, the St Justin Trophy, at the samedistance with Rob Shaw making the top spot with149.8, Paul Charlton runner up on 149.5 and GeorgeCann third with 149.2.A quick break for lunch and the proceedings movedback to 500 yards for the third competition: the ECC/Imery Group Trophy. Gary Capell put up a 74.12 towin with George Cann close behind with 74.11 andPete Coley on 74.10.The last shoot on Saturday (the MWT Trophy at600 yards) saw a three way tie on 50.8. A tie shootfollowed where Rob Shaw surfaced as the winnerwith Jonathan Cload and Alastair Kinross comingsecond and third.The weather remained reasonable for the Sundayshooting. The main event, the Anchorage MarinePlastics Trophy, fifteen shots at 600 and 500 yards,produced a clear winner in Andrew Wilde with amagnificent 150.25. The six man team match based onthis event saw Cornwall coming out top with 861.20,with Devon runners up on 840.72.Lunch followed then a bit of light relief with a tenround rapid fire match at 500 yards, completiontime set at two minutes. The Millpool Gallop, as it isknown, was taken by George Cann who raced awaymaking a 49.7 with Kelvin Ramsay close on his heelswith 49.4.The final match of the meeting involved the toptwenty competitors in the Grand Aggregate shootingin the HRH Duke of Cornwall Cup - this time onlyone sighter was allowed with fifteen scoring shots tofollow at 600 yards. On this occasion George Gilpinrose to win outright with a superb 75.12 to round offthe whole proceedings.As regards the other individual prizes the GrandAggregate, the Jobson Rose Bowl, was won with a veryconvincing 420.46 out of a maximum 425 by Rob Shaw.Dropping only five points over 70 shots including ametric target event is no mean achievement.
