This is due to the immense technologicalimplicati<strong>on</strong>s of these novel materials and systems that make smart/intelligent structurestechnology <strong>on</strong>e of the most imp<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>tant emerging technologies of the future. A smart structurec<strong>on</strong>sists of a passive, load bearing <str<strong>on</strong>g>master</str<strong>on</strong>g> structure with surface mounted <str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> embeddedsens<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>s and actuat<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>s made out of smart materials (e.g. piezoelectrics, electrostrictives,magnetostrictives, shape mem<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>y alloys), that have the capability to sense and take c<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>rectiveacti<strong>on</strong>. If sensing and actuating is linked by feedback c<strong>on</strong>trol, the system is often called anintelligent structure. This type of system can automatically adapt itself to changes in operatingc<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s in such a way that e.g. the def<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>mati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> vibrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> buckling tendency isattenuated to acceptable limits, <str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> it can m<strong>on</strong>it<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> its own health. Due to these capabilitiessmart/intelligent structures are increasingly used e.g. in automotive and aerospace engineering,robotics, medical applicati<strong>on</strong>s etc. Typical applicati<strong>on</strong>s are shape c<strong>on</strong>trol, high-precisi<strong>on</strong>positi<strong>on</strong>ing, vibrati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trol, noise c<strong>on</strong>trol, health m<strong>on</strong>it<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing etc.Research areas1. Static and dynamic analysis <strong>on</strong> piezoelectric/magnetostrictive b<strong>on</strong>ded smart beam/plateexperimentally based <strong>on</strong> the software Labview. From the static/dynamic resp<strong>on</strong>ses of thesmart beam, geometrically and material n<strong>on</strong>linearity can be detected.2. Active c<strong>on</strong>trol of smart beam/plate f<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g> vibrati<strong>on</strong> suppressi<strong>on</strong>, various c<strong>on</strong>trol alg<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ithmshave been simulated <strong>on</strong> computer, and these c<strong>on</strong>trol alg<str<strong>on</strong>g>or</str<strong>on</strong>g>ithms are going to beimplemented into the real system.RequirementsInterested in mechanics, c<strong>on</strong>trol engineering and programmingBasic knowledge of Labview would be helpful
