In addition, members without access to the internet, orwho might prefer to respond by post, were invited in an article in the UCUmember-ship magazine to take part in the survey; approximately ten peopleresponded in this way. Retired UCU members were excluded from the emailsurvey.Those contacted by email were initially given three weeks in which to respond.Before the initial deadline for completing the questionnaire, members who didnot respond were sent two reminder emails.There were 24,030 respondents to the survey after deleting non-completeresponses. Of these, 7,110 were employed or principally employed in FE; 1,097were in adult education; 14,667 were in HE; and 187 in prison education. Anumber of respondents (969) did not identify the sector in which theyprincipally worked.10

In all, 80% of respondents employed on a full-time contractworked more than 40 hours a week and 36% worked more than 50 hours aweek.3 These categories are not mutually exclusiveas a high proportion of respondents(9.1%) identified themselves as bothacademic and academic-related, forexample as both teachers and managers.11
