Zaš<strong>to</strong> volim <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>Napisala Jelka Tepšić...“komandant” plemenita srcaPriča o prijateljstvu <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>a stradanju Grada i razbijenim izlozima na prenijeti i u naš Grad. Prijateljstvo ii njemačkog Bad Homburga Stradunu. Udruga Kroatienhilfe, koje sam suradnja dvaju gradova, njegovanapriča je o jednoj osobi –osnivačica, zajedno sa svojim prijateljima entuzijazmom Olge S<strong>to</strong>os, imaju svogjedinstvenoj prijateljici <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>a,njegovoj najvećoj zagovornici, i u ratu,i u miru, is<strong>to</strong>vremeno samozatajnoj, alibeskrajno upornoj, odlučnoj i vrijednojosobi – Olgi S<strong>to</strong>os. Gospođa je <strong>to</strong> kojaneprestano radi na produbljivanjuprijateljstva dvaju gradova, odDomovinskog rata sve do danas, akruna <strong>to</strong>g djelovanja bilo je bratimljenjei potpisivanje Povelje o suradnji 2002.godine. Ogromna energija, vedrinai entuzijazam koji zrače iz gospođeOlge S<strong>to</strong>os,učinili su ovu vitalnuženu legendom, omiljenom kako uNjemačkoj, tako i u Hrvatskoj, posebiceu <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>u. Gospođa Olga, majkaje prijateljstva između njemačkog<strong>grada</strong> Bad Homburga i <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>a,bratimstva zače<strong>to</strong>g u najtežim danimaDomovinskoga rata, kad je potaknutastrašnim stradanjima u domovinigđa.Olga otvorila svoje srce, postalanajvećom zagovornicom hrvatskeslobode i najzaslužnijom za ostvarenjevelikog broja humanitarnih projekatai pomoći upućene <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>u.Gospođa Olga, počasna je građanka<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>a od 2010. godine, istaknutapolitičarka u Njemačkoj i iznimnocijenjena stanovnica vrlo boga<strong>to</strong>g<strong>grada</strong> Bad Homburga koji je smještenu neposrednoj blizini Frankfurta.Humanost, prijateljstvo, iskrena odanost- te istinske vrijednosti značajke su ovebila je vrlo aktivna u prikupljanjupomoći svim krajevima Hrvatske – odVukovara, Slavonskog Broda, Zagreba,sve do <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>a. Naša udruga iz BadHomburga je za vrijeme rata u Hrvatskuuputila vrlo vrijednu humanitarnu pomoć,sveukupno oko 420 šlepera, nekoliko godinauzas<strong>to</strong>pce, godišnje vrijednosti od nekolikomiijuna eura.Naša udruga brinula je i o110 djece bez roditelja, na način da smonašli obitelji u Njemačkoj koje su postajalekumovi djeci pomažući im svakog mjeseca“-ispripovijedala je gđa. Olga dio bogatihhumanitarnih aktivnosti kojima jeupravljala za tijekom najtežih ratnihdana i nakon završetka rata. Puno<strong>to</strong>ga još je napravljeno u <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>uzahvaljujući njezinom angažmanu izalaganju. Obnovljen je i rekonstruiranDom za nezbrinutu djecu Maslina,projekt vrijedan više od milijun kuna,za kojeg će gđa.Olga reći da joj jenajvažniji i najdraži.Dugogodišnja suradnja izmeđudvaju gradova rezultirala je nizomprijateljstava, od najmlađih generacijastanovnika dvaju gradova do seniora,sportaša – judaša, rukometaša,nogometaša, tenisača, glazbenika ikulturnjaka, vatrogasaca, do članovagradske uprave obaju gradova kojiredovi<strong>to</strong> razmjenjuju iskustva. BadHomburg je visokotehnološki razvijenasredina s brojnim kvalitetnim rješenjimazagovornika i na dubrovačkoj strani,njezinog velikog i iskrenog prijatelja-pročelnika Grada <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>a zafinancije Nika Pavlovića. To je čovjek –reći će gđa.Olga – bez kojeg ostvarenjesvih zamisli ne bi bilo moguće, čovjekkoji iskreno i s velikom predanošću skrbiza njegovanje međusobnih gradskihodnosa, ali još više o <strong>to</strong>me da gđa. Olgai njezini suradnici i prijatelji budu uvijeku <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>u dočekani i primljeniotvorena srca. Onako kako i zaslužuju.„Olga S<strong>to</strong>os zaista ne voli govoriti o sebi,ali mogu reći da sam je tijekom godinazaista dobro upoznao i doživljavamju kao istinskog prijatelja ne samoGrada, nego i mene osobno. Suradnjatijekom godina nije bila uvijek glatka ilaka, ali, vjerujte, zahvaljujući njezinojvelikoj upornosti došli smo do današnjihrezultata i činjenice da je međugradovima prijateljima najkonkretnijasuradnja upravo između <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>a iBad Homburga, zahvaljujući najvišeOlgi S<strong>to</strong>os. Dali smo joj nadimak„komandant“ jer je <strong>to</strong> zapravo riječkoja najbolje opisuje količinu njezinaangažmana i posvećenja realizaciji svihideja. Njavažnije je, a <strong>to</strong> posebno moramistaknuti, da Olgas S<strong>to</strong>ss sve svojeprojekte temelji na mladim ljudimačvrs<strong>to</strong> vjerujući da je <strong>to</strong> jedini pravi pu<strong>to</strong>stvarenja prijateljstva i suradnje izmeđudvaju gradova - rekao je Niko Pavlović.izuzetne osobe koja je svoju privrženostOlgakoja se u budućnosti mogu<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>u dokazala nebrojenoputa i svojim djelima potvrdilazaš<strong>to</strong> voli <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>.„Prva humanitarna pomoć uvidu najlonske folije krenulaje prema <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>u nakon š<strong>to</strong>sam na televiziji vidjela prilog o6 Dobrodošli u <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Lje<strong>to</strong> 2013.

Why I Love <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>BY Jelka TepšićOlga S<strong>to</strong>os– the noble-hearted “Commander”The s<strong>to</strong>ry about the friendshipbetween <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> andthe German city of BadHomburg is the s<strong>to</strong>ry of one person– a unique friend of <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>, itsgreatest advocate both in war andpeace, and at the same time a modest,yet endlessly persistent, determinedand diligent person – Olga S<strong>to</strong>os.This lady has worked incessantly <strong>to</strong>intensify the friendship between thetwo cities, from the Croatian War ofIndependence right up <strong>to</strong> the presentday, and the culmination of all this hardwork was the twinning and signing ofthe Partnership Charter in 2002. Theenormous energy, cheerfulness andenthusiasm that Olga S<strong>to</strong>os radiateshave made this vigorous woman alegend, well-liked both in Germany andCroatia, especially in <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>. Sheis “mother” <strong>to</strong> the friendship betweenthe German city of Bad Homburg and<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>. Their alliance began duringthe most difficult days of the CroatianWar of Independence, when – motivatedby the terrible suffering in Croatia– Mrs. S<strong>to</strong>os opened up her heartand become the greatest advocate ofCroatian freedom. She was responsiblefor carrying out a large number ofhumanitarian projects and for aid sent<strong>to</strong> <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>. An honorary citizen of<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> since 2010, Olga S<strong>to</strong>os isa renowned German politician and ahighly respected resident of the wealthycity of Bad Homburg, located in closeproximity <strong>to</strong> Frankfurt. Humanity,friendship and sincere loyalty are thevirtues of this outstanding person,who has proved her commitment <strong>to</strong><strong>Dubrovnik</strong> on countless occasions,showing through her actions why sheloves <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>.“The first humanitarian aid in the formof nylon sheetingheaded for <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>after I had seen a TVprogramme on thesuffering of the Cityand the broken shopwindows in the Stradun. The KroatienhilfeSociety, which I co-founded with my friends,was very active in collecting help for all partsof Croatia – from Vukovar, Slavonski Brodand Zagreb <strong>to</strong> <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>. During the warour society, based in Bad Homburg, wassending highly valuable humanitarian aid<strong>to</strong> Croatia, 420 trucks in all, for severalconsecutive years, amounting <strong>to</strong> severalmillion Euros per year. The society also <strong>to</strong>okcare of 110 parentless children by findingGerman families who became their sponsorsand helped them on a monthly basis.”This is how Mrs. S<strong>to</strong>os describes onlya part of the extensive humanitarianactivity she was responsible for duringthe most difficult days of the war andafter it. Many things have been done in<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> thanks <strong>to</strong> her commitmentand dedication. The Maslina Children’sHome was renovated and reconstructed.Mrs. S<strong>to</strong>os claims this project, worthover one million Kuna, <strong>to</strong> be herfavourite and most important mission.The longstanding cooperation betweenthe two cities has resulted in a largenumber of friendships formed betweencitizens of all age groups, from theyoungest members of the population<strong>to</strong> seniors, including athletes (judo,handball, football and tennis players),musicians, people engaged in culture,fire-fighters and officials of both citieswho swap ideas on a regular basis. BadHomburg is a high technology city andhas many excellent ideas that can alsobe employed in our City in the future.Nurtured by the enthusiasm of OlgaS<strong>to</strong>os, the friendship and collaborationbetween the two cities has its advocateon <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>’s side <strong>to</strong>o - her greatand sincere friend Niko Pavlović, Headof the City of <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> FinancialDepartment. According <strong>to</strong> Mrs. S<strong>to</strong>os,he is the person without whom therealization of all these ideas would beimpossible. Mr. Pavlović cultivates therelationship between the two citiessincerely and with great devotion,and pays even greater attention <strong>to</strong>welcoming Mrs. S<strong>to</strong>os, her associatesand friends at all times and with anopen heart. The way they deserve.“Olga S<strong>to</strong>os really doesn’t like <strong>to</strong> talkabout herself. However, I can say that,over the years, I have got <strong>to</strong> knowher very well indeed and I considerher <strong>to</strong> be not only a true friend of theCity, but a personal friend as well.The collaboration has not always beensmooth and easy, but, believe me, it’sowing <strong>to</strong> her great persistence that wehave achieved the results we have <strong>to</strong>day.It is a fact that out of all the twin citiesthe best relationship is the one between<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> and Bad Homburg, andthis is mostly thanks <strong>to</strong> Mrs. S<strong>to</strong>os.We nicknamed her “the commander”because the word describes in the bestway the extent of her commitmentand dedication <strong>to</strong> the realization of allthe ideas. Reklobi se, maslina je ta koja bezuvjetno daje,lozi međutim treba puno ljubavi, pažnjei brige da bi uzvratila rodom. Pos<strong>to</strong>jiipak jedna vinorodna sorta, i <strong>to</strong> neobična, već au<strong>to</strong>h<strong>to</strong>na hrvatska sorta odkoje su proizvedena i prva zaštićena vinas ovih pros<strong>to</strong>ra, za koju je zasigurno čuosvaki vinski znalac u bilo kojem dijelusvijeta, a koja je presedan u odnosu nas<strong>to</strong>ljećima poznatu usporedbu maslinei loze. To je Plavac mali za kojeg kažuda voli patnju i da u teškim i škrtimuvjetima dalmatinskog južnog priobaljai o<strong>to</strong>čja daje najbolje rezultate. Plavacmali je, kako bi rekao jedan od poznatihvinara poluo<strong>to</strong>ka Pelješca, Frano Miloš,najbolji pokazatelj borbe za opstanak.On je pobjednik svog okruženja i jedanod vladara ovih pros<strong>to</strong>ra.U Hrvatskoj, a posebice u Dalmaciji, idanas se može naći velik broj au<strong>to</strong>h<strong>to</strong>nihvinskih sorti. Taj bogati sortimentrazloge ima u dugoj povijesti uzgojavinove loze, pogodnim prirodnimuvjetima i tradicionalnoj okrenu<strong>to</strong>stiovdašnjih ljudi vino<strong>grada</strong>rstvu ivinarstvu. Pos<strong>to</strong>je arheološki nalazi kojipotvrđuju da je upravo na područjimauzgoja Plavca maloga kultura uzgojavinove loze i proizvodnje vina pos<strong>to</strong>jalajoš više s<strong>to</strong>ljeća prije Krista. Povijesniizvori također govore da su vinske sortena ovu zemlju donijeli još stari trgovciSredozemlja, Feničani i Grci.Plavac mali je najpopularnija igospodarski najvažnija, uz <strong>to</strong> iau<strong>to</strong>h<strong>to</strong>na crna sorta vinove lozeu Hrvatskoj. Go<strong>to</strong>vo pri svakomspominjanju najboljih hrvatskih vina,Plavac mali nezaobilazna je tema, apriča o <strong>to</strong>j sorti i vinu također je vrlointrigantna i zanimljiva. Tome svakakodoprinosi činjenica da je izravni predakZinfandela. Znanstvena istraživanjadovela su do spoznaja o hrvatskimkorijenima te kultne američke sorteo čijem se podrijetlu desetljećimanagađalo. Dakako, suštinska snaga ovesorte iz koje crpi svoju popularnost jenjezin iznimno kvalitetan potencijalzbog kojeg se od ove sorte moguproizvesti izvrsna crna vina. Kadase <strong>to</strong>me pridoda podneblje samihlokacija na kojima se uzgaja, Plavacmali postaje pravi adut nacionalnogvinarstva Hrvatske. Ova vinska sortatraži puno sunca i <strong>to</strong>pline, pa su jojuzgojna područja ograničena nasrednju i južnu Dalmaciju. Ponajviše seuzgaja na poluo<strong>to</strong>ku Pelješcu i o<strong>to</strong>cimaHvaru, Braču, Korčuli i Visu. Dakle,isključivo južnim vinogorjima gdje senalaze i čuveni položaji poput Dingačana Pelješcu , a vino <strong>to</strong>ga vinigorja jei prvo hrvatsko vino sa zaštićenimgeografskim položajem “ Dingačberba 1961.” I drugo hrvatsko vinosa zašti<strong>to</strong>m zemljopisnoga podrijetlatakođer je proizvedeno od Plavca malog– “Postup1967”.Plavac mali zahvalna je sorta po mnogočemu. Vegetacijsko razdoblje trajedugo, ali Plavac mali u proljeće ne žuris otvaranjem pupova, a dozrijeva vrlokasno š<strong>to</strong> je ovisno o lokalitetu i godiniod kraja rujna do sredine lis<strong>to</strong>pada.I na vrlo siromašnijim i sušnim,kamenitim tlima dobre je bujnosti i rađaredovi<strong>to</strong>. Pokazuje i izuzetnu otpornostprema bolestima i nepogodama.Vina od Plavca malog proizvode sepo klasičnoj tehnologiji proizvodnjecrnih vina. I onda, kada ga se vinificirana tradicionalni način, koji počinjegaženjem grožđa u drvenom posuđuveć u samim vinogradima, zahvaljujućinajprije visokom alkoholu i taninimakojima obiluje, od Plavca malog nastajuizvrsna vina.Karakteristike položaja vino<strong>grada</strong>s Plavcem malim i vrijednost samesorte omogućuju dobijanje različitihvina od ove sorte. Od običnih s<strong>to</strong>lnihvina prosječne kakvoće do vrhunskihsvjetskih vina najviše klase . Is<strong>to</strong> takovrlo je pogodan i za dobijanje desertnihvina. Slavu i visok ugled uglavnomje stekao ponajprije na položajimavrhunskih klimatskih značajki, sakojih daje puna, visoko alkoholična iintenzivno obojena crna vina U timuvjetima grožđe ove sorte u redovnimberbama ima od 10 do 20 pos<strong>to</strong>suhih bobica koje doprinose kakvoći iintezitetu mirisa. Takva su vina redovi<strong>to</strong>visoke kvalitete i dugog potencijalastarenja. Enolozi bi rekli da kod tih vinanajprije uočavamo rubinski crvenu boju,slijede mirisne senzacije u intenzivnojaromi uz primarne voćne arome gdjese naslućuju mirisi suhih šljiva, zrelihkupina i višanja , a pronalazi se i mirisprosušenih bobica , kao i neke začinskearome. Najjače senzacije ipak dolazeod okusa pri kojemu se već na prvomkontaktu osjetila s kapljicom naslućujesnaga onih vina u kojima koncentracijaalkohola nerijetko prelazi 14vol.pos<strong>to</strong>taka.Summer 2013<strong>Welcome</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> 11

People saythat the olive tree gives unconditionally,while the grapevine needs a lot of love,attention and care before it rewardsyou with fruit. However, a grapevariety - not an ordinary one, butan indigenous Croatian variety fromwhich the first protected wines fromthis area were made and with whichall wine connoisseurs from every par<strong>to</strong>f the world are certainly familiar - isconsidered a precedent in regard <strong>to</strong> theaforementioned ancient comparisonbetween the olive tree and the grapevine.It is Plavac Mali, which is believed <strong>to</strong>thrive on suffering and which gives itsbest results on the barren soil of theSouth Dalmatian coast and islands.According <strong>to</strong> Frano Miloš, one of therenowned wine makers from the PelješacPeninsula, Plavac Mali is the bestindica<strong>to</strong>r of the struggle for survival. Itis the champion of its own environmentand one of the lords of this region.Today, one can find a large number ofindigenous wine varieties in Croatia, andDalmatia in particular. The reasons forsuch a rich assortment lie in the longhis<strong>to</strong>ry of grapevine cultivation, thefavourable natural conditions and thetraditional commitment of local people<strong>to</strong> grape-growing and wine production.Numerous archaeological finds confirmthat the culture of growing grapes andwine making already existed severalcenturies B.C. in the particular areawhere Plavac Mali is now cultivated.His<strong>to</strong>rical records also reveal that winevarieties were brought <strong>to</strong> this area byancient Mediterranean merchants,Phoenicians and Greeks.Plavac Mali is Croatia’s most popular andeconomically most important indigenousred grapevine. It is an essential <strong>to</strong>picon almost all occasions when the finestCroatian wines are mentioned, andits s<strong>to</strong>ry is extremely intriguing andappealing. This is definitely supportedby the fact that Plavac Mali is a directpredecessor of Zinfandel. Scientificresearch has revealed the Croatian rootsof this American cult wine variety, theorigin of which had been a mystery fordecades. Of course, the core strengthof Plavac Mali - <strong>to</strong> which it owes itspopularity - is its outstanding quality,enabling the production of excellent redwines. Furthermore, the specific natureof the location in which it is cultivatedmakes Plavac Mali a major asset inCroatian wine-making. This wine varietyrequires plenty of sun and warmth,so its cultivation areas are limited <strong>to</strong>Central and Southern Dalmatia. It ismost extensively grown on the PelješacPeninsula and the islands of Hvar, Brač,Korčula and Vis, that is, exclusivelyin the southern grape-growing areas,including the well-known location ofDingač on the Pelješac Peninsula, whichis the home of Croatia’s first wine withprotected geographical origin „Dingač,vintage 1961“. The second Croatianwine with protected geographical originis also produced from the Plavac Malivariety – „Postup 1967“.Plavac Mali is a rewarding wine varietyfor many reasons. Its growing seasonis long, the buds open in late springand the grapes grow ripe quite late -depending on the locality and weatherconditions - from late September <strong>to</strong> midOc<strong>to</strong>ber. The variety grows exuberantlyeven on extremely barren and dry soiland gives a bumper crop on a regularbasis. It is highly resistant <strong>to</strong> diseasesand poor weather conditions. Classicalred wine production technology is usedfor making wines from the Plavac Malivariety. The traditional-style productionbegins already in the vineyard wherepeople press grapes with their feet inwooden vats, and - thanks <strong>to</strong> the highpercentage of alcohol and an abundanceof tannins in Plavac Mali - the finalresult is first class wines.The characteristics of the Plavac Malivineyard locations and the variety’s<strong>to</strong>p quality make the production ofdifferent wines possible, from ordinaryaverage-quality table wines <strong>to</strong> <strong>to</strong>pquality ones. Plavac Mali also givesoutstanding dessert wines. The varietyowes its popularity and excellentreputation mainly <strong>to</strong> the specific climatein the locations where it is cultivated,producing a full-bodied, alcohol-richand intensely-coloured red wine. Thegrape varieties grown in these conditionscontain from 10 <strong>to</strong> 20 percent of drygrapes, which contribute <strong>to</strong> the qualityand intensity of the bouquet. Such winesare regularly of high quality and havea long maturation period. According<strong>to</strong> wine experts, the first thing onenotices about such wines is their rubyredcolour. Their intensive bouquetprimarily includes traces of prunes, ripeblackberries, sour cherries, dried berriesand some spices. OBLJETNICENa Veliku srijedu, 6. travnja pristupi raščišćavanju njezinih ruševina,1667. godine, maloa 2. ožujka 1669. imenovala je trojicuposlije devet sati ujutro plemića za dužnosnike njezine gradnje,<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>om se prolomio prijeteći s napomenom da nova crkva ne smijetutanj, pa strašan udarac koji je ubiti veća od stare na is<strong>to</strong>j lokaciji. Opatnekoliko sekundi pretvorio Grad u Gradić izradu je projekta povjerioruševinu. U kataklizmičkom potresu Andriji Buffaliniju iz Urbina, pa su nacrtpoginuli su: knez, cijela Vlada, polovica i reljefni model bili go<strong>to</strong>vi u drugojčlanova Senata, devet kanonika, 35 polovici 1671., te ih je tada poslao ubiskupijskih svećenika, 60 redovnika, <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>, nastavljajući zdušno stručno121 časna sestra, uz još oko 3000i financijski podržavati graditeljskustanovnika. U <strong>to</strong>j se trešnji srušila i obnovu.velebna romanička Katedrala Gospe Radove izgradnje barokne trobrodneVelike iz prve polovice 12. st., ures i Katedrale s transep<strong>to</strong>m, nad čijim ćeponos <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>a.križištem lebdjeti vitka kupola, započeoNajvažniji pojedinačni građevinski, je 1672. arhitekt Paolo Andreotti izobnoviteljski pothvat nakon potresa u Genove, a povremeno su na Katedrali<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>u bila je ponovna gradnja radili i drugi arhitekti koji su uPrvos<strong>to</strong>lne Crkve, koja je svojim<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>u povremeno boravili, da bivjerskim, kulturnimm i političkim vanjske radove na njoj 1712. uspješnoznačenjem utjelovljavala Grad, pa je i dovršio domaći graditelj i klesar, majs<strong>to</strong>rgrađanima bilo <strong>to</strong>liko stalo do njezine Ilija Katičić. Nakon jednogodišnjihobnove, u čemu je osobit i nemjerljiv unutarnjih radova Katedralu jedoprinos dao opat Stjepan Gradić. osposobio za bogoš<strong>to</strong>vlje, a svečanimDubrovački poklisar pri Sve<strong>to</strong>j S<strong>to</strong>lici, je činom vjerničkom puku i javnostiučen i dičan čovjek, s pravom za svoje predana 29. siječnja 1713.godine.zasluge nazvan „ocem domovine“, već Dugo je dubrovačka Prvos<strong>to</strong>lnicaje nekoliko mjeseci nakon katastrofe bila pusta i prazna, pa su se najprijenas<strong>to</strong>jao da se Gospi, uz Kneževrješavali glavni oltar i orgulje, koje jedvor dade prednost kao simboluVlada posudila iz franjevačke crkve u3ooobnovljenoga Grada. Sukladno <strong>to</strong>me Slanome, a Senat odlučio da se iz Crkve18. lipnja 1667. Vlada je odlučila da se sv. Lazara na Pločama zatraži žrtvenikBra<strong>to</strong>vštine Lazarina, ni više ni manjenego peterodijelni poliptih MarijinaUznesenja, slavnog mletačkog slikarazrele renesanse Tiziana Vecellija. OBLJETNICEBY Maja Nodari3oothAnniversary of<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> CathedralOn Easter Wednesday, 6April 1667, shortly after9.00 am, a threatening roarwas heard in <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>, followed bya violent shaking of the ground whichturned the entire City in<strong>to</strong> a ruin withina few seconds. The people killed in thiscataclysmic earthquake included: theRec<strong>to</strong>r, the entire Government, one halfof the Senate members, nine canons,35 Episcopal priests, 60 friars, 121nuns and around 3000 inhabitants. Themagnificent Romanesque Cathedralof the Assumption of the Virgin Maryfrom the first half of 12 th century, thepride and glory of <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>, wasalso demolished by the earthquake.The most significant individualbuilding- and res<strong>to</strong>ration project afterthe earthquake was the reconstructionof the Cathedral, which - owing <strong>to</strong>its religious, cultural and politicalimportance - was the embodiment of theCity. That is why the citizens cared somuch about the Cathedral’s renovation,<strong>to</strong> which Abbot Stjepan Gradić madea major and invaluable contribution.Gradić - <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>’s envoy <strong>to</strong> the HolySee - a man of learning and honour,called with good reason “Father of theHomeland” for his merits, insisted onlya few months after the catastrophe that,along with the Rec<strong>to</strong>r’s Palace, priorityshould be given <strong>to</strong> the reconstructionof the Cathedral, as a symbol of theres<strong>to</strong>red City. As a result, on 18 JuneSummer 20131667, the Government decided <strong>to</strong> beginclearing out the Cathedral ruins, and,on 2 March 1669, put three noblemenin charge of the res<strong>to</strong>ration, with thestipulation that the new church mustnot be larger than the old one buil<strong>to</strong>n the same location. Abbot Gradićentrusted Andrea Buffalini from Urbinowith the design, and the scale drawingand relief model were completed in thesecond half of 1671. He immediatelysent them <strong>to</strong> <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> and zealouslycontinued <strong>to</strong> provide his expert andfinancial support. In 1672 PaoloAndreotti, an architect from Genoa,began work on the construction of athree-naved Baroque Cathedral with atransept, over which an elegant cupolawas <strong>to</strong> be built. Other architects livingtemporarily in <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> also workedon the Cathedral, while Ilija Katičić,a local builder and s<strong>to</strong>ne-mason,successfully completed the externalworks in 1712. After a year’s work onits interior the Cathedral was ready forworship, and on 29 January 1713, aftera solemn ceremony, it was opened forthe congregation and for the public.The <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Cathedral was bare andempty for a long time. The first objects<strong>to</strong> arrive were the main altar and organ,which the Authorities received on loanfrom the Franciscan Church in Slano,while the Senate decided <strong>to</strong> submit arequest for the altar of the Brotherhoodof St Lazarus’ from the St LazarusChurch at Ploče - the pentaptych of theAssumption of the Virgin Mary no less- by the famous Venetian painter fromthe High Renaissance period, TizianoVecelli. Just two centuries after itsconstruction, the <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Cathedral’sexterior was completed with an elegantcupola and roof terrace balustrades,adorned with 12 statues by the greatCroatian sculp<strong>to</strong>r Marin Radica fromKorčula, while the interior was fittedwith side-chapels with fine altars, infront of which people worshipped onthe occasions of Our Lady of Porat,the Sacred Heart, St Theresa the LittleFlower and the Holy Cross, and manyother major church holy days. Thus, theCathedral managed over the centuries <strong>to</strong>successfully combine its sacral role withthe most exquisite church art.After the earthquake of 1979, anarchaeological dig was carried out,resulting in the discovery of fascinatingartefacts in layers under the Cathedral,while some fundamental res<strong>to</strong>rationchanges were also undertaken. However,the Cathedral’s atmosphere and stylewere devastated and desacralizedby “purification”. Awaiting its 300 thbirthday, the Cathedral hopes that anew res<strong>to</strong>ration will take place verysoon, <strong>to</strong> bring back its dignity of style,form, aesthetics and spirit – its liturgicalfunction – much <strong>to</strong> the delight of thefaithful.<strong>Welcome</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> 17

Uz 400. obljetnicu rođenja „Oca Domovine“i pobornika europskog jedinstvaepan GradićNapisao Stjepan KrasićJedan anonimni humanist uXVII. s<strong>to</strong>ljeća nadahnu<strong>to</strong>napisa: Parva domus Ragusa, sedsufficit orbi – <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> je malidom, ali dostaje svijetu! Danas ljudidiljem svijeta uglavnom znaju za<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> zahvaljujući njegovimjedinstvenim prirodnim ljepotama,visokim gradskim zidinama i lijepooblikovanim bedemima koji većizdaleka upućuju dobrodošlicu svimdobronamjernim putnicima, ali iprijetnju zlonamjernima š<strong>to</strong> ih čekaako mu se nepozvani usude približiti.Istina je da je <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> po <strong>to</strong>mudanas prepoznatljiv kao jedno odnajpoželjnijih turističkih odredišta usvijetu. Međutim, ono š<strong>to</strong> istinski činivelikim ovaj Grad nisu <strong>to</strong>liko njegovegrađevine koliko njegovi ljudi kojisu znali sve <strong>to</strong> stvoriti. „Čovjek jemjerilo svih stvari“, kako već u V. st.pr. Kr. napisa grčki filozof Protagora.U ovom malom Gradu bilo ih jedoista mnogo.Pretprošle godine (2011.)svečano smo proslavili 300.obljetnicu rođenja Ruđera JosipaBoškovića (1711.-1787.), velikanakojemu se cijeli svijet divi, a većove godine slavimo 400. obljetnicurođenja jednog drugog velikana,vjerojatno najvećega kojega jeikada iznjedrio Grad pod Srđem:Stjepana Gradića. Dok su, naime,drugi dubrovački velikani uglavnombili samo književnici, povjesničari,fizičari, matematičari, političari,diplomati itd., a samo rijetki od njihpolivalentni, Gradić je is<strong>to</strong>vremenobio sve <strong>to</strong> skupa, čak i više od <strong>to</strong>ga:filozof, teolog, pravnik, povjesničar,pjesnik, govornik, prevoditelj,jezikoslovac, matematičar, fizičar,astronom, meteorolog, diplomat,političar, optičar, stručnjak zaprecizno mjerenje vremena,hidrodinamička pitanja i dr. – sve<strong>to</strong> u jednoj osobi. Pravi „homouniversalis“ i <strong>to</strong> ne na lokalnoj, negona zavidnoj međunarodnoj razinina kojoj se našlo malo Hrvata upovijesti.Školovao se u <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>u,Rimu, Fermu i Bologni stekavšizavidnu izobrazbu iz filozofije,teologije, obaju prava, matematikei poznavanja klasičnih i modernihjezika, a priroda ga je obdarilaizvanrednom inteligencijom, blagomnaravi, zadivljujućom sposobnošćuapstraktnog razmišljanja,me<strong>to</strong>dičnošću, kritičnošću, smislomza mjeru, psihološkom pronicljivošću,diplomatskom vještinom, velikimknjiževnim talen<strong>to</strong>m i ora<strong>to</strong>rskomsposobnošću, š<strong>to</strong> mu je svudaotvaralo vrata. Samim time sudbinamu je namijenila veliku budućnost.Nikakvo čudo da jezavidnu karijeru učinio u Rimu,jednom od najvećih povijesnih,kulturnih, vjerskih, političkih iznanstvenih središta svoga doba uEuropi. Bio je član više dikasterija(ministarstava) Sv. S<strong>to</strong>lice, glavniupravitelj prestižne Vatikanskebiblioteke kao treći stranac koji jeobavljao tu službu, stručnjak zameđunarodne odnose, pobornikeuropskog jedinstva una<strong>to</strong>č svimrazlikama među pojedinim državama,i nadasve učenjak. Uspješno sebavio teologijom, filozofijom,pravom, poviješću, matematikom,fizikom, meteorologijom i drugimznanstvenim disciplinama.Eksperimentirao je i bavio sepraktičnom primjenom teorijskihspoznaja u optici, brodarstvu, nauticii hidromehanici održavajući veze sučenjacima iz go<strong>to</strong>vo cijele Europe.Ostavio je iza sebe oko s<strong>to</strong>tinuknjiga, znanstvenih rasprava, članakai dr..No, ono, š<strong>to</strong> na osobit načinobilježava Gradića kao čovjeka jenjegovo zadivljujuće domoljubljekoje je osobi<strong>to</strong> došlo do izražajanakon velikog potresa koji je 1667.go<strong>to</strong>vo sa zemljom sravnio njegovrodni Grad. Od prve vijesti okatastrofi njegov život do zadnjegdaha bio je protkan nesebičnimradom na pružanju pomoćiunesrećenoj Domovini: u novcu,hrani, zbrinjavanju beskućnika,građevinskom materijalu, zanatlijamasvih vrsta i arhitektima kako bi seGrad š<strong>to</strong> prije podigao iz ruševinai obranio od vanjskih neprijatelja.Insistirao je da se najprije podignuobiteljske kuće za stanovanje, a ondaKnežev dvor kao upravno središteGrada i Katedrala kao njegov vjerskii civilizacijski simbol, za š<strong>to</strong> je izinozemstva pribavio vrsne arhitekte iznatna novčana sredstva. Zahvaljujućitim naporima Grad se malo po malopodizao iz ruševina poprimajućidanašnji izgled kojemu se svi dive.Već su ga njegovi suvremenicinazvali najčasnijim naslovom kojimgrađanin jednoga <strong>grada</strong> ili zemljemože biti nazvan: „ocem domovine“i „obnoviteljem našega <strong>grada</strong> islobode“. Nowadays, people all overthe world are familiar with <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>mainly due <strong>to</strong> its unique beauty, highcity-walls and elegant ramparts thatbid welcome from afar <strong>to</strong> all wellintentionedtravellers, but are also athreat <strong>to</strong> malevolent people who dare<strong>to</strong> approach the city uninvited. It is awell known fact that for this reason<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> is <strong>to</strong>day one of the world’smost attractive <strong>to</strong>urist destinations.However, what really makes thecity magnificent are not so much itsbuildings, but its people who knew how<strong>to</strong> create it all. «Man is the measure ofall things», wrote the Greek philosopherProtagoras as early as the 5th centuryBC. In this small city, there really weremany such people.Two years ago (2011) wecelebrated the 300th anniversary ofthe birth of Ruđer Josip Bošković(1711-1787), a leading spirit admiredby the entire world. This year, we aremarking the 400th anniversary of thebirth of another great man, probablythe greatest born in this City at thefoot of Mount Srđ: Stjepan Gradić.Namely, while other <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> giantswere only writers, his<strong>to</strong>rians, physicists,mathematicians, politicians, diplomats,etc., and only few were polymaths,Gradić was all of these things, and evenmore: a philosopher, theologian, lawyer,his<strong>to</strong>rian, poet, ora<strong>to</strong>r, transla<strong>to</strong>r,linguist, diplomat, mathematician,physicist, astronomer, meteorologist,politician, opticist, expert for precisetime measurement and hydrodynamics,etc. - all in one person. He was a true„homo universalis“ not only at local, butalso at the highest international level,which only few Croats achieved duringthe course of his<strong>to</strong>ry.Gradić studied in <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>,Rome, Fermo and Bologna and acquireda remarkable education in the fieldsof philosophy, theology, both kindsof law, mathematics and in classicaland modern languages. He was giftedwith extraordinary intelligence, agentle disposition and an as<strong>to</strong>nishingability for abstract thinking. He wasalso methodical, possessed criticaljudgement, a sense of measure,psychological astuteness, diplomaticskill, a notable literary talent andora<strong>to</strong>rical ability, which opened all doors<strong>to</strong> him everywhere. For all these reasons,destiny marked out a great future forhim.It is not surprising thatGradić had a flourishing career inRome, one of Europe’s greatest his<strong>to</strong>ric,cultural, religious, political andscientific centres at the time. He wasa member of a number of dicasteries(ministries) of the Holy See, head ofthe prestigious Vatican Library as onlythe third foreigner entrusted with thepost, international relations expert,advocate of European unity despiteall the differences between individualcountries, and, above all, a scholar.Gradić was successful in theology,philosophy, law, his<strong>to</strong>ry, mathematic,physics, meteorology and otherscientific disciplines. He conductedexperiments and dealt with the practicalapplication of theoretic knowledge inoptics, navigation, nautical science andhydromechanics, had contacts withscientists from almost the whole ofEurope, and wrote around a hundredbooks, scientific dissertations, essays,etc.However, Gradić’s mostdistinctive human trait was his amazingpatriotism, which he expressedparticularly after the great earthquakeof 1667 that almost completelydestroyed his native city. From thefirst piece of news he received aboutthe catastrophe until his last breath,Gradić’s life was selflessly dedicated<strong>to</strong> helping his wrecked Homeland inthe form of money, food, taking careof homeless people, building materialsand all kinds of craftsmen and architectsrequired for his city <strong>to</strong> rise from theruins as soon as possible and <strong>to</strong> defenditself from external enemies. He insistedon giving priority <strong>to</strong> the building offamily homes, and later the Rec<strong>to</strong>r’sPalace as the City’s administrativecentre and the Cathedral as its religiousand civilisational symbol, for which heprovided competent foreign architectsand substantial material funds. Owing<strong>to</strong> his efforts the City rose slowlyfrom the ruins, acquiring its widelyadmired present-day form. Gradić’scontemporaries already bes<strong>to</strong>wed onhim the highest accolades a residen<strong>to</strong>f a city or country could ever receive:«Father of the Homeland» and«Res<strong>to</strong>rer of our City and Freedom».These are more than good reasons <strong>to</strong>save forever his name and work fromoblivion.20 Dobrodošli u <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Lje<strong>to</strong> 2013.

Veselje se s lakoćom širiiz trublji i bubnjeva Gradske glazbe<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> i već s prvim tak<strong>to</strong>vima nastjera da bez razmišljanja, poput djece,podignemo ruke na pljesak. I tako već170 godina!Gradska glazba <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> osnovanaje 1843. i od tada do danas neprekidnodjeluje. U svom sastavu, ovajDubrovčanima omiljeni orkestar ,okuplja četrdesetak aktivnih glazbenika,profesionalce i amatere, a sve volontere.Još od osnivanja Gradske glazbe<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>, članovi amateri bili suvećinom zanatlije i <strong>to</strong>, zanimljivoje, uglavnom limari i s<strong>to</strong>lari. Počeoje svirati kao petnaes<strong>to</strong>godišnji dječak, au zvuke limenih instrumenata zaljubiose još kao dijete dok je skakutao ispredglazbenika u mimohodu u kojem jebio i njegov otac. Svirao je zajedno socem, trombon i udaraljke, a danas je“capobanda”, onaj koji brine za red,daje znak za početak jer grubo je,kaže, vidjeti Glazbu bez predvodnika.Njegov je pokojni otac Vinko bio članGlazbe od 1905. do 1960. godine, adanas uz gospara Duška, povremeno,u Glazbi svira i njegov sin Vinko. Odsvih unuka ljubav za glazbu naslijedilaje četrnaes<strong>to</strong>godišnja unuka Ðina,flautistica.„ Lijepo je vidjeti unuku kada svirau mimohodu s Glazbom - ponosnoće nono Duško – Nakon škole trčina probe da ne bi zakasnila jer jakovoli svirati u Glazbi. I ja je volimnakon <strong>to</strong>liko godina. Svi je volimo.Jer tko bi bez ljubavi <strong>to</strong>liko godinavolonterski svirao, i usred ljeta na plus36 stupnjeva, koliko je bilo za jednoganastupa na Bledu, i na minus deset uVaraždinu? Ljubav prema glazbi uvijekje prevladala.“ Gospar Duško sviraoje u Folklornom ansamblu Linđo,bio je član i Ansambla <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>te suosnivač Klape Lero, a svirao jei u dubrovačkom Mandolinskomorkestru. ANNIVERSARIESBy Maja Rilović Koprivec17O th Anniversary of the<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Brass BandOne cannot imagine anyreal <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> celebrationwithout the <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> BrassBand. In the sunlit Stradun, the cheerfulmarches performed by the <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>Brass Band musicians - who paradein their bright red uniforms playingtheir gleaming instruments - triggeroff genuine resonant joy. Cheerfulnessspreads easily from the <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> BrassBand trumpets and drums, and theirvery first notes make us clap our handsspontaneously, like children. This hasbeen going on for 170 years!The <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Brass Band was foundedin 1843, and has performed withoutinterruption ever since. This popular<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> band consists of some fortyactive musicians, both professionals andamateurs, all of whom perform on avoluntary basis.Right from the foundation of the<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Brass Band, its amateurmembers consisted mainly of craftsmen,tin-smiths and joiners in particular. Atthat time <strong>to</strong>o, entire families played inthe Band: brothers, parents and children– explains seventy-five year old DuškoAsić, a retired joiner and long timemember of the <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Brass Band,who has also been its leader for the lastten years. Mr. Asić and his family area good example of the Brass Band’spopularity in <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> and of thetradition and love of music making thathave been carried on from generation<strong>to</strong> generation. It is thus not uncommonthat several members of the same familyperform <strong>to</strong>gether. In the 170- yearhis<strong>to</strong>ry of the <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Brass Band,the Asić family has been loyal <strong>to</strong> theBand for more than a hundred years!The fourth generation of the Asićfamily is already part of this <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>orchestra!Mr. Asić himself has been a <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>Brass Band member for the last 60years. He began <strong>to</strong> play as a fifteen yearold boy, and fell in love with the soundof the brass instruments while still achild, running in front of the musicians- one of whom was his father - duringtheir march past. A former trombonistand percussionist, who once performedwith his own father, Mr. Asić is nowthe Band leader in charge of order. Hesignals the musicians <strong>to</strong> start playing,and says that it is not nice <strong>to</strong> see theBand without a leader. His late father,Vinko, was a Brass Band member from1905 <strong>to</strong> 1960, and <strong>to</strong>day Mr. Asić’s son,Vinko, occasionally plays in the Bandalongside his father. Out of all Mr. Asić’sgrandchildren, it is his fourteen-year oldgranddaughter and flutist, Ðina, whohas inherited his love of music.„It is delightful <strong>to</strong> see your owngranddaughter performing in the Band’smarch past along the Stradun – saysGrandad Duško proudly. After school,she runs <strong>to</strong> rehearsals not <strong>to</strong> be late,because she just loves <strong>to</strong> play in theBrass Band. And I still love it <strong>to</strong>o, afterso many years. All of us do. Because,without love, who would have playedfor so many years on a voluntary basisin the middle of summer, at 36 degrees– as was the case during a performancein Bled – and at minus 10 degrees inVaraždin? The love of music has alwaysprevailed.“ Mr. Asić used <strong>to</strong> play inthe Linđo Folklore Ensemble, was amember of the <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Ensemble, aco-founder of Klapa Lero and a memberof the <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Mandolin Orchestra.This year, on the occasion of the 170thanniversary of the <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> BrassBand, the City of <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Councilhonoured Mr. Duško Asić with a specialaward: the City of <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Prize forhis unselfish contribution <strong>to</strong> culturalamateurism and for the participation ofhis entire family in the <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> BrassBand.The tradition, love and joy ofperforming <strong>to</strong>gether in the <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>Brass Band are privileges that simplycannot be measured and written downin musical notes.24 Dobrodošli u <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Lje<strong>to</strong> 2013.


TALENTITenisačicaAnaKonjuhAna Konjuh s 15 je godinadosegnula djelić svog sna.Onog koji je sanjala kad jejoš kao djevojčica vrtićke dobi počelasvoje druženje s teniskim reke<strong>to</strong>m,dolazeći na treninge nepunih šestgodina starije sestre Andree. Postalaje najbolja juniorka svijeta, osvojivšidvostruku krunu na juniorskomAustralian Openu.Koliko god joj je sjaj u Melbornu,koji se nastavio na niz pobjeda naprestižnim Orange Bowlu i EddieHerru, donio zadovoljstva, svjesnaje kako još nije ni na pola puta dosvog teniskog cilja, plasmana međunajbolje seniorke svijeta.- Juniorski tenis nije ništa u odnosuna seniorski. U načinu treninga nemavelike razlike, nastavljam kao i dosad,dnevno radim po šest sati, no iakosam zrelija i iskusnija, psihički moramjoš puno napredovati kako bih bila narazini onih najboljih. Ne želim gledatiu daleku budućnost, nadam se bitizdrava i bez većih ozljeda te uspjetiostvariti š<strong>to</strong> bolje igre i rezultate –ističe Ana, koja još od svojih početakaprima pohvale za talent i trud, te čujenajave istinskih poznavatelja tenisa,poput Gorana Ivaniševića, kako je ustanju ostaviti značajan trag.Iako trenira šest sati dnevno i kažekako ne zna š<strong>to</strong> bi radila u životu dase nije počela baviti ovim spor<strong>to</strong>m,ističe kako su joj na prvom mjestuobitelj i vjera.najbolja juniorka svijeta- Tenis je jedan od najvažnijih dijelovamoga života, no ne i najvažniji.Posvećena sam <strong>to</strong>m sportu, odabralasam put koji ponekad nije lagan i nosipuno odricanja, ali ne žalim ni za čim,posebice jer su rezultati tu. Moj izborpoput svih drugih ima i vrlina i mana.Trenutno sam baš sretna, ispunjena –govori Ana, koja je od desete godine,zbog nepos<strong>to</strong>jećih uvjeta za kvalitetantrening u <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>u, za mjes<strong>to</strong>stanovanja, uz potporu obitelji, odabralaZagreb.Upravo zbog odvojenosti od rodnogGrada, dolasci u <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> za nju suposebni. I ne znače tek odmor.- Nedostaje mi Grad. Svaki put kaddođem doma probude se uspomene ipoželim se vratiti, no svjesna sam kakou <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>u ne bih mogla kvalitetnotrenirati. Svakako, jednog dana voljelabih živjeti baš tu – priznaje Ana.Nedavno je posjetila svoju obitelj i Grad,prigodom vjenčanja sestre Andree,koju je ozljeda zaustavila na njezinomteniskom putu.- Četiri smo sestre, no s Andreom samnajbliža. Ona me najbolje razumije.Prolazila je is<strong>to</strong> š<strong>to</strong> i ja. Vežu nas, pored<strong>to</strong>g š<strong>to</strong> smo sestre, i ljubav prema tenisui godine života u Zagrebu, i pobjede, iporazi. Zahvalna sam joj na svemu š<strong>to</strong>je učinila za mene, na svakom savjetui pomoći – priča Ana o odnosu sasestrom koju je nemoguće zaobići kadagovori o njezinom teniskom dijeluživota.Neobično joj je kad djeca, koja trenirajutenis, od nje traže au<strong>to</strong>gram. No, radoodgovara na njihova pitanja i odigrapokoji poen s njima kad ima vremena.Jedan od susreta s najmlađima nedavnose dogodio na terenima u Uvali Lapad,tamo gdje je počela njezina teniskapriča.- Najčešće ih zanima koliko treniram,kako uspijevam sve obveze uskladiti saškolom – kaže Ana, koja dopisno polaziTurističku školu.Još u danima kada je čekajući sestru daodradi trening u Uvali Lapad, provodilavrijeme udarajući loptice u zid, krasilisu je osmijeh i radost dok je reketdržala u ruci. Taj pogled, istuupornost i želju ova djevojkaposjeduje i danas. TALENTSAnaKonjuhThe World’s Best Junior Tennis PlayerAt the age of 15, Ana Konjuh hasmade part of her dream cometrue. The dream she had whilestill in kindergarten when she startedher friendship with the tennis racket,attending the training sessions of hersister Andrea, her senior by almost sixyears. Ana has become the world’s bestjunior tennis player by winning a doublecrown at the Australian Open JuniorTournament.Regardless of the satisfaction whichthe vic<strong>to</strong>ry in Melbourne brought her– followed by a series of wins at theprestigious Orange Bowl and EddieHerr <strong>to</strong>urnaments - she is aware thatshe is not yet half way <strong>to</strong> reaching hergoal in tennis: <strong>to</strong> be ranked among theworld’s best senior tennis players.- Junior tennis is nothing in comparisonwith senior tennis. There isn’t a bigdifference in the training. Followingmy established routine, I still practicesix hours a day. However, although Iam more mature and experienced now,I still have a long way <strong>to</strong> go as far aspsychology is concerned in order <strong>to</strong>match the <strong>to</strong>p players. I do not wish <strong>to</strong>look in<strong>to</strong> the distant future, I just hope<strong>to</strong> be healthy, without serious injuries,<strong>to</strong> play the best I can and achieve thebest possible results – says Ana. Fromthe very beginning her talent and efforthave been praised by true tennis expertssuch as Goran Ivanišević, who claimedthat she was capable of playing a majorrole in the world of tennis. Althoughshe trains for six hours a day and admitsthat she doesn’t know what she woulddo if she wasn’t involved in tennis, Anaclaims that her priorities include herfamily and faith.- Tennis is one of main parts of mylife, but not the most important. I amdedicated <strong>to</strong> this sport and I chose apath which is not easy at times andrequires a lot of sacrifice. However, Ihave no regrets whatsoever, especiallybecause I can see the results. My choice,like all choices, has its advantages anddisadvantages. At the moment I amtruly happy and fulfilled, explains Ana.She has chosen <strong>to</strong> live in Zagreb sincethe age of ten - with the support of herfamily - because <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> lacked theconditions necessary for good qualitytraining. Separation from her nativeCity is the reason why Ana’s visits <strong>to</strong><strong>Dubrovnik</strong> are special for her and notmerely a holiday.- I miss the City. Every homecomingbrings back memories and I would like<strong>to</strong> remain there, but I am aware thatin <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> I would not be able <strong>to</strong>have good quality training sessions.Nevertheless, one day, I would love <strong>to</strong>live right here, confesses Ana.She has recently visited her family andthe City on the occasion of the weddingof her sister Andrea, whose tennis careerwas brought <strong>to</strong> an end by injury.- I have three sisters, but Andrea is theclosest <strong>to</strong> me. She understands me thebest. We have been through similarexperiences. In addition <strong>to</strong> being sisters,we are connected by our love of tennis,the years lived in Zagreb, our vic<strong>to</strong>riesand defeats. I am grateful for everythingshe has done for me, for every pieceof advice and help – Ana describesher relationship with her sister, who isimpossible <strong>to</strong> leave out while talkingabout the tennis part of her life.It feels strange <strong>to</strong> Ana when tennisplayingchildren ask her for herau<strong>to</strong>graph. However, she gladly answerstheir questions and plays a game ortwo with them when she has the time.One of her meetings with very youngchildren <strong>to</strong>ok place recently at UvalaLapad (the Bay of Lapad), the placewhere her tennis s<strong>to</strong>ry began.- They most often wish <strong>to</strong> know howlong my practice sessions last, howI manage <strong>to</strong> find time for all myobligations and study at the same time –says Ana, who is doing a correspondencecourse in Tourism.At the time when she was still hittingtennis balls against a wall while waitingfor her sister <strong>to</strong> finish her practicesessions at Uvala Lapad, Ana wasalready beaming with joy when she helda racket in her hand.Today this girl still has that verysame look, persistence and eagerness.Although her approach <strong>to</strong> this sportmakes Ana a true professional, tennisis still a game she delights in. Otvaranje ovog novogobjekta bilo je snažan poticaj tadašnjemturizmu Grada.I nakon završetka Prvoga svjetskograta, Hotel Odak je nastavio uspješnoposlovanje, a nakon smrti RobertaOdaka, 22. travnja 1927., daljnjerukovođenje hotelom preuzela je njegovasupruga Mina, a u kolovozu 1929.godine Hotel Odak je prodan. Kupilaga je „Dubrovačka rivijera“ – Društvoza izgradnju hotela za 5 milijuna i 400tisuća dinara. To je Društvo proširilo ipreuredilo Hotel i 1930. godine mudalo novo ime – „Excelsior“. Već tihprvih godina, „Excelsior“ ozbiljnopridonosi turističkoj prepoznatljivosti<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>a i njegove okoline. Godine1938. „Excelsior“ je kupio Božo Banac,predsjednik „Jugoslavenskog Lloyda“(ovo je poduzeće u svom sastavuimalo brodove i hotele, među kojimai zagrebačku „Esplanadu“). OBLJETNICEje zasigurno bio prvi dubrovački hotelkoji je doživio svjetsku slavu. Bile su<strong>to</strong> „zlatne godine“ ovog hotela, ali idubrovačkog turizma.Nakon obnove, Hotel je imao 120 sobas tekućom <strong>to</strong>plom i hladnom vodom,u većini soba bile su kade ili tuševi,centralno grijanje, pomoćni pros<strong>to</strong>ri, au svim se pros<strong>to</strong>rijama nalazio moderannamještaj.Početkom Drugoga svjetskog rata, utravnju 1941., u Hotelu su se smjestiliNijemci i Talijani (ostali su samoTalijani) sa svojim zapovjedništvom.Nakon Talijana, u Hotel su 1943.opet došli Nijemci. Saveznici su 1944.bombardirali „Excelsior“, koji je <strong>to</strong>mprilikom djelomično izgorio.Poslije Drugoga svjetskog rata, HotelExcelsior je više puta obnavljan,preuređivan i restauriran. Unjemu su od samog početka radilinajbolji dubrovački ugostiteljskiradnici (kuhari, konobari, slastičari,barmeni, recepcioneri...), bio je pravorasadište vrhunskih kadrova. Uz te,iznadprosječno kvalitetne zaposlenike,njegova prednost u usporedbi s drugimdubrovačkim hotelima bila je i odličnalokacija. U drugoj polovici pedesetihgodina 20. s<strong>to</strong>ljeća, odlučeno je dase izgradi nova z<strong>grada</strong> ovog Hotela.Međutim, gradnja koju su pratili brojniproblemi se odužila, da bi u cjelostibila završena 1965./1966. godine,kada je novi hotel zasjao punim sjajem.Dobio je novih 240 kreveta, tako da jeukupno imao 320 postelja najmodernijeopremljenih, š<strong>to</strong> je odgovaralo tadašnjojnajvišoj A kategoriji, novi res<strong>to</strong>ran za350 osoba, kuhinju, slastičarnicu, ibrojne druge sadržaje koje je spomenutakategorija zahtijevala. Posebna atrakcijabio je prostrani zimski bazen, dug 25,a širok 3 metra s grijanom morskomvodom. Tih sedamdesetih i osamdesetihgodina prošloga s<strong>to</strong>ljeća, „Excelsior“Tijekom Domovinskoga rata(1991.-1995.)“Excelsior“ je pretrpioozbiljne štete, kako granatiranjem,tako i dugim boravkom prognanikai izbjeglica. Detaljno je obnovljeni 1998. ponovno je primio goste.Bio je prvi hotel na našoj obali s petzvjezdica. Raspolagao je sa 172 sobe i 18apartmana.Godine 2001., Wren’s grupacijaGorana Štroka kupila je ovaj objekt odHrvatskog fonda za privatizaciju. Danasje „Excelsior“ u vlasništvu GrupacijeLukšić iz Čilea. ANNIVERSARIES1OOYears of theExcelsior HotelNapisao / By Nikola ŠubićThe Odak Hotel at Ploče(owned by Robert Odak andDr. Marteccini), the predecessorof the famous Excelsior Hotel, began <strong>to</strong>operate on the evening of 10 July 1913.The opening of the new hotel was apowerful incentive <strong>to</strong> the City’s <strong>to</strong>urismat the time.After the end of World War I, the OdakHotel continued its successful business.After Robert Odak’s death on 22 April1927, the hotel was managed by his wifeMina. In August 1929 the hotel wassold, and the <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Riviera HotelConstruction Company bought it for 5million,400 hundred thousand Dinars.The Company extended and renovatedthe hotel and gave it a new name - theExcelsior Hotel. Already during itsfirst years the Excelsior made a majorcontribution <strong>to</strong> the <strong>to</strong>urist recognizabilityof <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> and its surroundings. In1938 the hotel was bought by BožoBanac, President of Yugoslav Lloyd (thecompany that owned ships and hotels,including Zagreb’s Esplanade Hotel).The Excelsior was renovated again,a third floor was added, a restaurantwith a terrace overlooking the sea wasopened, and the beach was connectedwith the main building by an eleva<strong>to</strong>rand a staircase. After the renovation,the hotel had 120 rooms with runninghot and cold water, the majority ofrooms included bathtubs or showers,central heating and auxiliary rooms,Summer 2013Richard Bur<strong>to</strong>n and Elizabeth Taylorand all rooms were equipped withmodern furniture. At the beginning ofWorld War II, in April 1941, the Hotelaccommodated the Germans and Italians(the Italians remained there) with theirheadquarters. After the Italians had left,the Germans returned <strong>to</strong> the hotel in1943. In 1944 the Allies bombarded theExcelsior, which was partially burneddown.After World War II, the hotel wasrenovated, redecorated and res<strong>to</strong>redseveral times. From the very beginning,<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>’s finest catering workers(chefs, waiters, pastry chefs, barmen,receptionists…) worked at the hotel,which was a true nursery for <strong>to</strong>p classpersonnel. In addition <strong>to</strong> such superiorpersonnel, the Excelsior’s advantageover other <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> hotels was itsexcellent location. In the second half ofthe 1950s, a decision on the constructionof a new hotel extension was reached.However, the construction, accompaniedby numerous problems, <strong>to</strong>ok a long time.It was finally completed in 1965/1966,when the new hotel shone resplendently.The Excelsior Hotel acquired 240 newbeds (which made a <strong>to</strong>tal of 320 bedswith the most up-<strong>to</strong>-date equipmentthat granted the hotel the then highest„A“ category, a new restaurant for 350people, a kitchen, a pastry shop andmany other facilities required by theaforementioned category. The hotel’sspacious 25-metre long and 3-metrewide indoor swimming-pool with heatedsea water was a special attraction. Inthe 1970s and 1980s the Excelsior wasdefinitely <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>’s first hotel <strong>to</strong>earn world wide popularity. They were„golden years“ for both the hotel and<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> <strong>to</strong>urism.During the Croatian War ofIndependence (1991 – 1995) theExcelsior was severely damaged byshelling as well as by a lengthy stayby displaced persons and refugees.Thoroughly res<strong>to</strong>red afterwards, itwelcomed guests again in 1998. The firstfive-star hotel on the Croatian coast, ithad 172 rooms and 18 suites. In 2001,Goran Štrok’s Wren’s Hotel Groupbought the hotel from the CroatianPrivatization Fund.Today, the Excelsior Hotel is owned bythe Lukšić Hotel Group of Chile. UNESCO-va baštinaKlapskoAko bi netko želiood svih hrvatskihglazbenihfenomena izdvojiti najdalmatinskiji/najmediteranskiji, zacijelo bi se odlučioza klapsko pjevanje koje predstavljaidealan spoj tradicijskog i popularnog spozitivnom težnjom širenja izvan granicaDalmacije i zamišljenih mediteranskihgranica. Fenomen klapskog pjevanjakontinuirana je i relativno starapojava na koju su upozorili istraživačii muzikolozi krajem 19. s<strong>to</strong>ljeća.Tradicija klapa i klapske pjesme kakvudanas poznajemo formira se u vrijemeprofiliranja hrvatskih kulturnih, patako i glazbenih identiteta malihmediteranskih gradića na obali io<strong>to</strong>cima, posebice u Dalmaciji. To jevrijeme nastanka prvih organiziranihcrkvenih i svje<strong>to</strong>vnih pjevačkih zborova,ali i gradskih limenih glazbi (ostavštinaNapoleonova vremena), te tamburaškihsastava i orkestara.Sam pojam klapa premaetimološkim istraživanjima ima korijeneu tršćanskom dijalektu, gdje je smatranžargonskom riječju koja označavadružbu, družinu, skupinu ili kliku odkojih bi riječ družina najbliže označavalariječ klapa. Nekako u is<strong>to</strong> <strong>to</strong> vrijeme(polovina 19. st.), u Dalmaciji djelujuformalne i neformalne pjevačke družinekoje preuzimaju termin klapa. Danasriječ klapa najčešće asocira upravona organizirane pjevačke skupinesa specifičnim a capella reper<strong>to</strong>aromdalmatinskih klapskih pjesama.Potrebno je istaknuti da je u početcimaovaj način glazbenog komuniciranja bioisključivo muška tradicija. Bile su <strong>to</strong>manje skupine pjevača koje je uz prisnoprijateljstvo, zajedničke poslovne i ineinterese vezala i ljubav prema pjesmii zajedničkom muziciranju. Ribari itežaci pjevali su uz bok trgovcima iobrtnicima, učenicima i studentimanajviše u konobama u kojima se uzjednostavno jelo (slane srdele, slanutak,bob, pršut, sir) pilo crno i bijelo vino.Pjevali su za svoju dušu po uskimkaletama tražeći skrivene kutke u kojimaglas najbolje rebatije – odzvanja, nazadovoljstvo družine pjevača. Pjevali su iza druge, posebno voljene drage kojimabi skupina pjevača pjevala podoknice,serenade, sve dok se ukućani ne bi smililiotvoriti vrata i portune, pustiti pjevače ukuću te ih počastiti jelom i pićem. Is<strong>to</strong>zadovoljstvo imale su prilike doživjetii brojne turistkinje kojima su svoj pjevpodarili dalmatinski „galebovi“, širećii na taj način dalmatinsku turističkuponudu.Glazbeno gledajući, radise o stilu tradicijskog homofonogpjevanja koji je evoluirao od tipičnotradicijskog oblika pjevanja (klapskapjesma) i pos<strong>to</strong>janja (klapa) do stručnopostavljenog, organiziranog oblikapjevanja koje se u današnje vrijeme34 Dobrodošli u <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Lje<strong>to</strong> 2013.

Izvodi ihpjevačka skupina - klapa (muška, ženskaili mješovita) od pet do deset pjevačapreteži<strong>to</strong> u durskom, četveroglasnomhomofonijskom slogu. Od ostalihsličnih mediteranskih a capella pjevanjarazlikuje ih izuzetno važna ulogavodećeg glasa – I. tenora kojeg u s<strong>to</strong>puu paralelnoj terci prati glas II. tenora.Duboki slavenski profondo basovi dodajutemeljne <strong>to</strong>nove akorada, a bari<strong>to</strong>nidodaju ulja pismi upotpunjujući akordepreostalim <strong>to</strong>novima, prinoseći takopunoći klapskog višeglasja.Spomenete li danas klape iliklapsko pjevanje bilo gdje u Hrvatskoj ilimeđu Hrvatima koji žive u inozemstvu,većina će upitanih prepoznati o čemuse u osnoviradi. Bit će tui onih koji će Vampokušati objasniti kakvo je<strong>to</strong> pjevanje, povezati ga sa svojimlje<strong>to</strong>vanjima, suncem, morem, vinomi ribom, sirom i pršu<strong>to</strong>m… E, tu ihmorate zaustaviti jer načine kako klape,odnosno cjelokupni klapski pokret danasfunkcionira zaista nije lako niti opisati,niti pokušati objasniti. Kompleksnusliku sačinjava mnoštvo glazbenihizričaja, modela, zemljopisnih bazena,izvedbenih prilika (smotri, susreta,festivala – poput dubrovačkog Aklapelafestivala klapa) koje u posljednjihdvadesetak godina izrastaju iz lokalnogglazbenog fenomena u regionalni,nacionalni, a na dobrom su putu dapostanu i globalni kulturno-tradicijskiproizvod. Zahvaljujući dobroj medijskojprezentaciji i popularizaciji klapskihpjesama, potaknu<strong>to</strong>j osnutkom Festivaladalmatinskih klapa u Omišu 1967.,klapsko je pjevanje pozna<strong>to</strong> i izvanDalmacije, u prvom redu kao kulturnodobro južnog dijela Hrvatske, ali ivrijednost koja predstavlja Hrvatskukao neizostavni dio europske kulture.Klapa nikada nije bila izoliran fenomen:karakter, glazbeni sadržaji i stiloviklapskog pjevanja dinamički su semijenjali kroz različite periode, slobodnoprihvaćajući vanjske utjecaje i promjene.Navedene činjenice glavni su razlozi zadanašnju popularnost klapskog pjevanja,posebice među mlađom generacijom.Klapska aktivnost nadovezujese na svjetske trendove koji u posljednjevrijeme preferiraju višeglasno a capellapjevanje kojemu po svim svojimznačajkama klapsko pjevanje izriči<strong>to</strong>pripada. UNESCO HeritageIf someone wished <strong>to</strong>single out the Croatianmusic phenomenonwhich is most characteristic ofDalmatia and the Mediterranean, hewould definitely choose klapa singing(Dalmatian harmony-singing), whichis an ideal blend of traditional andpopular music that definitely tends <strong>to</strong>expand beyond the borders of Dalmatiaand the imaginary borders of theMediterranean. Klapa singing is anongoing and relatively old phenomenon,first observed by researchers andmusicologists in the late 19th century.The tradition of klapa and klapa songas we know it <strong>to</strong>day was formed at thetime the Croatian cultural and musicalidentities of small Mediterranean citieswere being defined on the coast andislands, particularly those in Dalmatia.This is the time when the first organisedchurch and secular choirs appeared,along with city brass bands (a legacyfrom the time of Napoleon), as well astamburitza groups and orchestras.DalmatianAccording <strong>to</strong> etymologicalresearch, the term klapa (a harmonysinginggroup) derives from the dialec<strong>to</strong>f Trieste, where it was considered aslang word denoting a gang, group orband, of which the word group wouldbe the most precise. This is the time(the mid 19th century) when bothformal and informal singing groupsthat performed in Dalmatia adoptedthe term klapa. Today, the word klapais most often associated with organisedgroups of singers with a specific acappella reper<strong>to</strong>ire comprising Dalmatianklapa songs. It is worth mentioningthat, initially, this way of performingwas exclusively a male tradition. Theywere small groups of singers whoshared, along with close friendship andmutual business and other interests, alove of songand making music <strong>to</strong>gether. Fishermenand peasants sang alongside merchants,craftsmen, pupils and students, mainlyin taverns where people consumedsimple dishes (salted anchovies, chickpeas,broad beans, smoked ham, cheese)and drank red and white wine. Theysang for their own pleasure in narrowalleys, searching for hidden cornerswhere the voice resounds the best,much <strong>to</strong> the delight of the singinggroup. They also sang for other people,especially for their sweethearts, whomthe group serenaded until the housedwellers <strong>to</strong>ok pity on them, openedtheir doors and hallways, let themin and offered them food and drink.Numerous female <strong>to</strong>urists also had the36 Dobrodošli u <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Lje<strong>to</strong> 2013.


By Joško Ćaletaopportunity of enjoying the song of theDalmatian „seagulls“ (gigolos), thusadding their own contribution <strong>to</strong> the lis<strong>to</strong>f Dalmatian <strong>to</strong>urist attractions.From the musicologicalaspect, this is a traditional homophonicstyle of singing which evolved from atypically traditional form of singing (theklapa song) and existence (klapa) <strong>to</strong> aprofessionally set up, organised form ofsinging, which is nowadays – becauseof the way it is performed – considered<strong>to</strong> belong more <strong>to</strong> popular music stylesthan <strong>to</strong> traditional ones. Klapa songsare recognizable by the way they areperformed, the gender and numberof performers, the internal musicalstructure and the motifs of their poeticcontents. They are performed by aIf, nowadays, you mentionklapas or klapa singing anywhere inCroatia or among Croats who liveabroad, the majority of them willrecognise the basic point. Some ofthem will try <strong>to</strong> explain this kind ofsinging, and connect it with theirvacation, the sun, sea, wine, fish, cheeseand smoked ham… This is where youhave <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>p them, because the waysin which klapas, i.e. the entire klapamovement, function <strong>to</strong>day is indeedneither easy <strong>to</strong> describe nor easy <strong>to</strong>explain. The complete image consistsof many musical expressions, models,geographic regions and performingopportunities (events, gatherings andfestivals – such as <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>’s AklapelaFestival of klapas) which have in the lasttwenty years developed from a localmusical phenomenon in<strong>to</strong> regional andhave changed intensively throughdifferent periods, freely adoptingexternal influences and alterations.The aforementioned facts are the mainreason for the present-day popularityof klapa singing, particularly among theyounger generation.Klapa activity follows world trends whichin recent times prefer a cappella partsinging,<strong>to</strong> which klapa singing definitelybelongs, due <strong>to</strong> its characteristics.Klapa Singinggroup of singers –klapa (male, female ormixed) - consisting of five<strong>to</strong> ten members who sing mainlyin a major key and in the four-parthomophonic style. They differ fromother similar Mediterranean a cappellatypes of singing due <strong>to</strong> the extremelyimportant role of the leading voice –the 1st tenor, closely followed by the2nd tenor’s voice in the parallel third.The deep Slavic profondo basses add thebasic chord notes, while the bari<strong>to</strong>nesenhance the song by completing thechords with the remaining notes, thuscontributing <strong>to</strong> the fullness of the klapapart-singing.national phenomena,and are well onthe way <strong>to</strong> alsobecoming a global culturaland traditional product. Thanks <strong>to</strong>good media presentation and thepopularization of klapa songs, encouragedby the establishment of the DalmatianKlapa Festival in Omiš in 1967, klapasinging has also become popular outsideDalmatia, primarily as a culturaltreasure of the southern part of Croatia,but also as a value that representsCroatia as an integral part of Europeanculture. Klapa has never been an isolatedphenomenon: the character, musicalcontents and styles of klapa singingThis is confirmed by last year’sinclusion of klapa singing in UNESCO’sRepresentative List of the IntangibleCultural Heritage of Humanity. U skladu sa sličnimnas<strong>to</strong>janjima na europskom Mediteranu,odlukom Velikog i Općeg vijeća od 9.veljače 1432. utemeljeno je dubrovačkonahodište, Hospital milosrđa.Za Nahodište je preuređenaopćinska z<strong>grada</strong> nasuprot samostanu Malebraće na Placi (danas z<strong>grada</strong> u Zlatarićevojulici unutar zidina). Nakon potresa1667. godine Nahodište je preseljeno uzapadno predgrađe Pile gdje je smještenou nekoliko z<strong>grada</strong> (najmanje tri). Go<strong>to</strong>vodva s<strong>to</strong>ljeća Nahodište je djelovalou zgradi u kojoj je danas smještenaTuristička <strong>zajednica</strong> Grada <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>ana Pilama. Nakon izgradnje bolnice1888. godine Nahodište je preseljeno naBoninovo, pros<strong>to</strong>r današnjega campusadubrovačkoga sveučilišta.Donositelju djeteta je bilazajamčena anonimnost, a za prihvatdjeteta uređena je obrtaljka, drveni valjaks otvorom. Dubrovačka rota nije bilanadzirana, a prema odredbama zakonamorala je biti otvorena danonoćno.Obrtaljkom je bila opremljena i bolnicaDomus Christi (najkasnije od 19. s<strong>to</strong>ljeća).Brojne štićenike, osobi<strong>to</strong> iz udaljenijihmjesta, primjerice s Pelješca, neanonimnosu donosile žene, koje su za tu uslugu bileplaćene.Summer 2013U zgradi Hospitala milosrđaje radilo osoblje pod nadzoromnekoliko državnih službenikavlastelina.U Nahodištu su većinombile zaposlene žene: nads<strong>to</strong>jnica,dojilje i sluškinje. Na platnoj listiNahodišta bili su i brijač-ranarnik isvećenik. O pritjecanju odgovarajućihnovčanih sredstava brinuo je Senat,najviše državno tijelo Republike.Stalno rastuće potrebe Nahodišta zaodjećom, obućom, lijekovima i raznimdrugim potrepštinama zadovoljavalisu lokalni obrtnici i trgovci, a gradskinovac dospijevao je na selo plaćanjemvanjskih dojilja koje su brinule zaštićenike u svojim domovima.Skupine štićenika Hospitalamilosrđa bile su šarolike. U njima sunesumnjivu većinu činila napuštenadjeca, no tu treba ubrojiti i djecurođenu u braku, koja su privremenouzimana na skrb kod javnih dojiljana državni trošak, najčešće u trajanjuod šest mjeseci. Prihvat djetetau Nahodište mogao se zbiti još umajčinoj utrobi. Državno Nahodištedjelovalo je vjerojatno već u 17.s<strong>to</strong>ljeću, a sigurno od polovice 18.s<strong>to</strong>ljeća i kao sklonište za trudnice unevolji. Hospital milosrđa djelovaoje kao nahodište, sirotište, rodilište iagencija za dojenje.Nakon prihvata u Nahodištei krštenja, štićenici su smještani koddojilja, najčešće na selima. Vanjskedojilje bile su udate žene s vlasti<strong>to</strong>mdjecom uz koju su dojile i “komunskodijete”. Dojilje su bile nadzirane idobivale su poticajni dodatak zauspješno dojenje. Nakon trogodišnjegdojenja, kasnije i duljeg, štićenici suvraćani u Nahodište, odakle su daljeudomljavani ili usvajani, većinom useoske obitelji. Odnos prema štićenicimau obitelji dojilja i udomitelja varirao jeizmeđu roditeljskog osjećaja i hladnoćeposlovnog odnosa. Primjeri loše skrbiizuzetno su rijetki.Tijekom 18. s<strong>to</strong>ljeća Nahodišteje prosječno primalo 26 štićenikagodišnje, a pedesetak u 19. s<strong>to</strong>ljeću. Uprosjeku, barem četvrtina nahoda bivalaje udomljena. Odrasli nahodi najčešćesu ostajali na najnižim stepenicamadruštvene ljestvice, no njihovi su sepo<strong>to</strong>mci uzdizali. Nahodski rodovi živei danas, integrirani u zajednicu iz kojesu potekli, svjedočeći o poslovičnojvitalnosti spurjana. Živo<strong>to</strong>pisi nahodana osobit način otkrivaju milosrdno lice<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>a i njegove vlastele.Dubrovačko Nahodišteukinu<strong>to</strong> je 1927. godine, pet godinaprije “okrugle” pets<strong>to</strong>godišnjiceutemeljenja.<strong>Welcome</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> 41

HeritageBy Rina Kralj– BrassardThe Compassionate Faceof <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>Protective institutionswere part of theurban landscape inthe well-organised City. Followingsimilar trends in the European part ofthe Mediterranean, a decision reachedby both Major and Minor Councilson 9 February 1432, resulted in theestablishment of the <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>Foundling Home, the Hospital ofMercy.A municipal building oppositethe Friars Minor Monastery in thePlaca was turned in<strong>to</strong> the FoundlingHospital (nowadays a building inZlatarićeva Street within the citywalls). After the earthquake of 1667,the Foundling Hospital moved <strong>to</strong>the western suburb of Pile, where i<strong>to</strong>ccupied several buildings (three, atleast). For almost two centuries, theFoundling Hospital operated in abuilding at Pile where the <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>Tourist Board is presently located. Afterthe construction of the hospital in 1888,the Foundling Hospital was moved <strong>to</strong>Boninovo, the site of the present-dayUniversity of <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Campus.People who brought foundlings weregranted anonymity, and the “wheel” - arevolving wooden turntable with anopening for admitting babies <strong>to</strong> thehospital - was installed. The <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>rota was not moni<strong>to</strong>red, and it had <strong>to</strong>be open night and day according <strong>to</strong>legal provisions. The Domus ChristiHospital also had a “wheel” (from the19th century onwards, at the latest).Numerous wards, particularly thosefrom remote places such as Pelješac,used <strong>to</strong> be brought non-anonymously bywomen who were paid for the service.The personnel employedat the Hospital of Mercy workedunder the supervision of a number ofaris<strong>to</strong>crat officials. The majority ofpersonnel at the Foundling Hospitalwere women: the governess, wet nursesand maidservants. Other staff on thepayroll included a barber-surgeon anda chaplain. The Senate, the Republic’smajor government body, was incharge of the finances. The FoundlingHospital’s increasing demands forclothes, footwear, medicines and variousother necessities were taken care of bylocal craftsmen and merchants, and cityfunds were sent <strong>to</strong> the villages for theservices of wet nurses who looked afterthe wards in their own homes.The Hospital of Mercy <strong>to</strong>okcare of different groups of wards. Themajority of them were undoubtedlyabandoned children, but also includedthose born in wedlock, who weretemporarily placed in the care ofcommunal wet nurses at the Republic’sexpense, most often for a period of sixmonths. The wards could be admitted<strong>to</strong> the Foundling Hospital while stillin their mother’s womb. The StateFoundling Hospital was probablyalready operating in the 17 th century,and certainly from the middle of the18 th century when it also served as ashelter for pregnant women in distress.The Hospital of Mercy operated asa foundling hospital, an orphanage,a maternity ward and a wet-nursingagency.Having been accepted at theFoundling Hospital and baptized, thewards were sent <strong>to</strong> their wet nurses,most often in the villages. The externalwet nurses were married women whobreast-fed their own children alongsidethe „communal child“. The wetnurses were supervised and receiveda stimulating bonus for successfulbreast-feeding. After a three-yearbreast feeding period, which was laterextended, the wards were sent back <strong>to</strong>the Foundling Hospital, from wherethey were fostered or adopted, mainlyby rural families. The way the wardswere treated in the wet nurse- and fosterfamilies varied from parental affection<strong>to</strong> the coldness of a commercially-basedrelationship. Examples of inadequatecare were rare indeed.In the course of the 18thcentury, the Foundling Hospitaladmitted on average 26 wards per year,and around fifty in the 19th century.On average, at least a quarter of thefoundlings were fostered. Grown-upfoundlings most often remained withinthe lowest social classes, however theiroffspring managed <strong>to</strong> make progress.Descendants of foundlings are alive even<strong>to</strong>day, integrated in<strong>to</strong> the communitythey originated from, bearing witness<strong>to</strong> the business vitality of the spurjani(bastards). KULTURNA BAŠTINADubrovački dumanjski ubručićiUboga<strong>to</strong>j riznici dubrovačke„male povijesti“, povijestisvakodnevlja, iščitavaju seneke od neprocjenljivih različi<strong>to</strong>stiovoga kraja, š<strong>to</strong> potvrđuje razinui dosege danas popularno zvanenematerijalne kulturne baštine. Jednaod takvih povijesnih pojava, zasigurnosu i dubrovački dumanjski ubručići. Tonisu bile samo lijepe ženske tradicijskerukotvorine, već i dubrovački izvozniproizvod, njegov negdašnji „brand“,zaštitni znak područja. Kroničariprve polovice 20. s<strong>to</strong>ljeća bilježe odubrovačkim povećim svilenim rupcima,dumanjskim ubručićima, „na glasu“.Ime im dolazi s<strong>to</strong>ga š<strong>to</strong> su ih tkaledumne, no svoje početke imaju upravou dubrovačkim ženskim samostanima.Sirovi svileni materijal dobivao se izdubrovačke okolice i „preko mora“.Dudova stabla, „murve“, dala je posaditiDubrovačka Republika upravo radigojenja svilene bube, a u Konavlima juje gojila svaka kuća, dok su konavoskežene kod kuće spravljale i bojile sviluza svoje prelijepe vezove. Izradom svilebavile su se pučanke, ali i dubrovačkevladike. I jedne i druge pri svojimsijelima nikada nisu dangubile, većuvijek neš<strong>to</strong> korisno radile.Prije velike trešnje, 1667., bilo je u<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>u više ženskih samostana,u koje su dolazile plemkinje za kojenije bilo nade da se udaju. One suu „konventima“ njegovale sve vrsteženskih radnji, u čemu su bile praveumjetnice.Dumanjski ubručići tkali su se „narašicu“, a po šarama su bili karirani,s pasom naokolo. Boje su bile crna itmas<strong>to</strong> crvena, a katkad i tmas<strong>to</strong> zelenai žuta. Žene su ih upotrebljavale za naglavu i ogrtanje, a muškarci najviše zatzv. ubručiće „tabakaše“. Dumanjskisu se ubručići uvelike izvozili iz<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>a, te su bili vrlo traženi pocijeloj Dalmaciji.Kad su Francuzi, okupiravši <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>zaplijenili i prenamijenili ženskesamostane, prestala je proizvodnjaubručića, a pored rijetkih privatnihosoba, izrađivali su ih još neko vrijeme uSamostanu od Sigurate, kod Tri crkve iSamostanu sv. Marije od Milosti naDančama. Privatni proizvođači zadržalisu tu industriju sve do početka 20.s<strong>to</strong>ljeća, ali smrću Kate Glumac naKonalu i Mare Bini u Gružu, bilježionodobni tisak, ta je industrija sasvimpropala. Podsjećam na proizvodnjudumanjskih ubručića u Samostanu odSigurate, gdje su se davno bile smjestileTrećoretkinje sv. Franje, ponekad zvanei „picukare“, čiji najstariji pisani spomendatira iz 1281. god. CULTURAL HERITAGENapisala / By Maja NodariThe <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Nuns’ KerchiefsThe rich treasure-house of<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>’s „little his<strong>to</strong>ry“,the his<strong>to</strong>ry of every-day life,contains priceless artefacts unique <strong>to</strong>this area, confirming the level andachievements of what is nowadayspopularly called the intangible culturalheritage. One such his<strong>to</strong>ric phenomenonis definitely the kerchiefs made bythe <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> nuns. These were no<strong>to</strong>nly beautiful traditional women’shandicrafts, but also an export produc<strong>to</strong>f <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>, a one-time “brand” andtrademark of the area. Chroniclers ofthe first half of the 20 th century wroteabout <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>’s largish silk headscarves, the “famous” nuns’ kerchiefs.Their Croatian name dumanjski ubručićireveals that the kerchiefs were originallywoven by nuns in <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>’s convents.The raw silk fabric was obtained fromthe <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> surroundings and from“overseas”. The <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> Republichad mulberry trees (murve) plantedfor the express purpose of breedingsilkworms. In the Konavle area everyhouse used <strong>to</strong> breed them, while thewomen of Konavle produced and dyedsilk in their homes for their beautifulembroidery. Both non-aris<strong>to</strong>cratic andaris<strong>to</strong>cratic women were involved in theproduction of silk. Neither class everwasted time and always did useful workduring their gatherings.Before the great earthquake of 1667there were several nunneries in<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> which admitted aris<strong>to</strong>craticgirls who had no hope of gettingmarried. In the convents they weretrained for all kinds of women’s work, inwhich they were true artists. The nuns’kerchiefs were woven using the na rašicu(warp and weft) method, in a checkpattern, with a surrounding trim. Thecolours included black and dark red, andsometimes also dark green and yellow.Women wore them over the head andshoulders, while men mostly used themas so-called „<strong>to</strong>bacco“ kerchiefs. Thenuns’ kerchiefs were exported from<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> on a large scale, and were ingreat demand all over Dalmatia.When the French – on occupying<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> - confiscated the conventsand put them <strong>to</strong> new use, theproduction of kerchiefs came <strong>to</strong> an end.In addition <strong>to</strong> a few private producers,kerchiefs were, for a time, still made atOd Sigurate Convent, at the Tri Crkve,and at the St Mary of Mercy Convent atDanče. Private manufacturers continuedthe trade until the early 20th century.However, according <strong>to</strong> local newspapers,the trade disappeared completely afterthe deaths of Kate Glumac at Kono andMare Bini in Gruž.Worth noting is the production of nuns’kerchiefs at Od Sigurate Convent, thehome of the St Francis Tertiaries –sometimes also called picukare – whowere first mentioned in a documentdating back <strong>to</strong> 1281. These nuns werepredominantly engaged in embroideryand weaving, as testified <strong>to</strong> by a numberof 18th century looms, and silk headscarves known as nuns’ kerchiefs wereparticularly popular and valued. Jedan od najstarijih europskihfestivala, Dubrovačke ljetne igre,64. godinu za redom publicipredstavlja bogat i raznovrstan dramski,glazbeni, operni, baletni, folklorni ifilmski program. Festival Grad promatrakao živi organizam, koji je s jednestrane najpoznatija hrvatska turističkadestinacija, a s druge jedno nevidljivomjes<strong>to</strong> emotivnih slika, bezvremenskihodjeka svih znamenitih genija kojisu ga nastavali i pohodili, odjekapredstava, koncerata, zvukova ljudi kojiga čine, onih koji ga posjećuju i onihkoji u njemu daju najbolje od svojegaumjeteonstva. The festival perceives theCity as a living organism, which, onthe one hand, is Croatia’s most famous<strong>to</strong>urist destination and, on the other,an invisible place of emotive images,timeless echoes of all the renownedgeniuses who have resided in and visitedit, and echoes of the plays, concerts andsounds of the people who make up thecity, who visit it and who offer it theirfinest art. This new, different City map- which everyone can mark according<strong>to</strong> his or her own memories, wishesand inspirations and which everyonecan breathe life in<strong>to</strong> in his or her ownway - is the basis of the way we view theworld <strong>to</strong>day and, therefore, our Festival.The physical borders of our world arebeing erased, whilst new ones are beingestablished. Napisala Zrinka KesićHrvatskih nacionalnih simbolaima jako puno,a međunajvažnijima su svakako grb,zastava i himna, ali i jedan cvijet. I dokje, primjerice, djetelina s tri lista irskizaštitni znak, u Hrvatskoj je <strong>to</strong> hrvatskaperunika (Iris croatica).Hrvatska perunika je endemska vrstau Hrvatskoj, a rasprostranjena je ubrdskim područjima kontinentalneHrvatske. Osim navedene vrste uhrvatske endeme spadaju još Irisadriatica, Iris illyrica, Iris pseudopallida iIris x rotschildii. Budući da predstavljajuiznimnu vrijednost za našu floru,navedene vrste su strogo zaštićene,a neke od njih se nalaze na Crvenompopisu ugroženih biljaka Hrvatske.Latinski naziv roda (Iris) potječe odimena starogrčke božice duge Iride,a hrvatski naziv dolazi od imenastarohrvatskog boga gromovnikaPeruna, odnosno njegove žene boginjePerunike. Vjerovalo se da bi na mjestugdje munja boga gromovnika udari u tloili ga duga dotakne niknula perunika, i<strong>to</strong> svaki put u drugoj boji.Perunike su zeljaste trajnice koje, ovisnoo vrsti, cvatu od ranog proljeća dosredine ljeta velikim cvje<strong>to</strong>vima u širokojpaleti boja, ali ipak najzastupljeniji suplavi. Budući da cvijeće plave boje uprirodi nije čes<strong>to</strong>, možda je upravo <strong>to</strong>razlog zaš<strong>to</strong> je tako otmjeno, profinjenoi ekstravagantno.Perunike (ili bogiše - kako ih čes<strong>to</strong>nazivaju u <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>u) uspijevaju nadobro ocjeditim tlima (neutralne doblago alkalne reakcije) i osunčanimpoložajima, premda podnose i zasjenjenepoložaje. Ove izuzetno otporne trajnices prekrasnim cvje<strong>to</strong>vima blagog mirisavrlo su jednostavne za uzgoj. Pogodnesu za sadnju kao rubne biljke, cvjetniceunutar kamenjara, lončanice, a omiljenesu i kao rezano cvijeće koje u vazizadržava svježinu danima. Vrlo uspješnose razmnožavaju dijeljenjem krajem ljetaili u proljeće, međutim moguće ih je ikupiti u rasadnicima ukrasnog bilja povrlo pristupačnim cijenama.I za kraj - na<strong>grada</strong> koju Turistička<strong>zajednica</strong> Dubrovačko - neretvanskežupanije dodjeljuje za uređenostturističkih mjesta nazvana je baš poovom cvijetu - „Perunika- Bogiša”.rvatska perunikaSummer 2013<strong>Welcome</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> 53


NATIONAL SYMBOLBy Zrinka KesićCroatian IrisCroatia has very many nationalsymbols, the most importan<strong>to</strong>nes definitely including thenational coat of arms, flag and anthem,but also a flower. While, for instance,Ireland’s trademark is the trefoil clover,its counterpart in Croatia is the Croatianiris (Iris croatica).The Croatian iris is an endemic plant,growing in the mountainous areas ofContinental Croatia. Other Croatianendemic plants include Iris adriatica,Iris illyrica, Iris pseudopallida and Iris xrotschildii. In view of the fact that theyare extremely important <strong>to</strong> the Croatianflora, the aforementioned plants arestrictly protected, some even beingincluded in Croatia’s Endangered PlantsRed List.The Latin name for the species (Iris)comes from the Old Greek rainbowgoddess Irida, while the Croatian namecomes from the Old Croatian thundergod Perun, i.e. his wife, the goddessPerunika. People believed that a perunikasprung up wherever the lightning of thethunder god struck or where a rainbow<strong>to</strong>uched the ground, each time in adifferent colour.Perunikas are perennial herbaceousplants which - depending on thespecies - flower from early spring <strong>to</strong>mid summer, developing big flowers ina wide spectrum of colours. These highlyresilient perennial plants with beautiful,delicately fragrant flowers are very easy<strong>to</strong> cultivate. They are well suited forgrowing as border plants, as floweringplants in rockeries and as pot plants.They also make well-loved cut flowersthat remain fresh in vases for manydays. Filmska poduzeća dolazeiz srednjoeuropskih metropola kao š<strong>to</strong>su Prag i Berlin. Iz kratkih novinskihteks<strong>to</strong>va može se saznati da prevladavajufilmovi ljubavnog i pus<strong>to</strong>lovnogsadržaja. Strani redatelji za određenescene koristili su usluge domaćihglumaca iz kazališta i naturščika.Nakon II. svjetskog rata<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> doživljava velik interesstranih filmskih kompanija početkom50-ih godina XX. st., a najplodonosnijerazdoblje filmske aktivnosti u<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>u i okolici bilježi se tijekom60-ih godina prošlog s<strong>to</strong>ljeća. Znatnutehničku pomoć pružaju im filmske kućeiz bivše države (Jugoslavije), dok domaćiglumci i glumice dobijaju zapaženeuloge u zajedničkim koprodukcijama.Mnogi dijelovi povijesnogGrada koriste se za snimanje scenau eksterijeru, dok se unutrašnjostdubrovačkih ljetnikovaca i drugihspomenika kulture upotrebljava za sceneinterijera. Zanimljivo je spomenuti da jeprvi film u boji snimljen u <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>utijekom srpnja/kolovoza 1953. godine.Radi se o glazbenoj komediji „Svadbau Dalmaciji“ u koprodukciji „Triglavfilma“ iz Ljubljane i „Hanza filma“ izHamburga. Film companies that came<strong>to</strong> <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> included those fromEuropean metropolises such as Pragueand Berlin. Brief newspaper articlesreveal that love- and swashbucklingadventure films prevailed at the time.Foreign film direc<strong>to</strong>rs engaged localtheatre ac<strong>to</strong>rs and non-professionals forsome of their scenes.After World War II,<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> attracted great interestfrom foreign film companies in theearly 1950s, while the most productivefilm-making time in <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> and itssurroundings was in the 1960s. A largenumber of European film companiesfrom Munich, Prague, Paris, Berlin,London, Rome and St Petersburg,but also from the USA (Los Angeles),made films of different genres. Theywere given substantial technicalsupport by film companies from theformer Yugoslavia, and local ac<strong>to</strong>rs andSummer 2013actresses were engaged for prominentroles in co-productions.Many parts of the Old Citywere used for filming exterior scenes,while <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> summer residences andother his<strong>to</strong>ric buildings were used forinterior scenes. It is worth mentioningthat the shooting of the first colourfilm in <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> <strong>to</strong>ok place in July/August 1953. It was a musical comedyentitled A Wedding in Dalmatia coproducedby Triglav Film from Ljubljanaand Hanza Film from Hamburg.Numerous famous film ac<strong>to</strong>rs, actressesand direc<strong>to</strong>rs visited <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> fromthe 1950s <strong>to</strong> the late 1980s, whensome 40 films were made. Napisala Sandra LackovićMljetska vršaSjednete li u bilo koji mljetskiugostiteljski objekt u nekomnjegovom kutku zasigurnoćete ugledati vršu. Taj tradicionalniribolovni alat, kojim su se Mljećanislužili oddavnina, i danas se aktivnokoristi, no postao je i turističkaatrakcija. Male vrše nerijetko udanašnje doba dobijaju i sasvimdrugu primjenu - kao stiliziranilusteri u konobama ili suveniri kojiće podsjećati na vrelinu i ljepotuzelenog Odisejeva o<strong>to</strong>ka, Mljeta .Vrša, koja je ulovom ribe hranilai othranila go<strong>to</strong>vo svaku mljetskuobitelj, u potpunosti je izrađena odprirodnih materijala, ispletena je,naime, od pruća mrče ili somine.Nakon š<strong>to</strong> se pruće ubere, pokiša seu vodu kako bi dobilo savitljivost,odvaja se po duljini, širini i debljini.Za jednu vršu potrebno je i do 400pru<strong>to</strong>va.Iako već dugi niz godina živi u<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>u, Vicko Lazo i dan-danasplete vrše, š<strong>to</strong> je naučio od dunda naMljetu, gdje je kao dječak provodiosvoje djetinjstvo. Danas ispletenevrše uglavnom daruje prijateljima,zaljubljenicima u starinu, tradiciju,poš<strong>to</strong>vateljima zanata koji je othraniogeneracije i generacije mljetskedjece i njegove obitelji. No, i ribolovvršama ima svoje zakoni<strong>to</strong>sti.- U male vrše hvataju se crneji,pjerke, kanjci, velike tabinje i jas<strong>to</strong>zi.Počinje se ribat sredinom travnja kadpočne lijepo vrijeme pa do VelikeGospe. Tada se bacaju s dvora Mljeta,a kad počne grubo vrijeme bacaju seu kanal. Vrša može trajati i do desetgodina, a s njima je jednostavnoribat. Mala riba koja uđe u vršu,mamac je za dobru, veću ribu, za<strong>to</strong>se pletu guste ili rijetke vrše. Nekadse u vršu uhvati i 10-tak jas<strong>to</strong>ga –pripovijeda dundo Vicko.Prisjećajući se djetinjstva, kažekako se čes<strong>to</strong> znalo dogoditi daje na s<strong>to</strong>lu, u <strong>to</strong> vrijeme, poslijeDrugoga svjetskog rata, bilo obiljejas<strong>to</strong>ga, a da su bili željni i gladnikruha. FOLD TRADESThe MljetIf you pay a visit <strong>to</strong> any cateringestablishment on the Island ofMljet, you will definitely see a fishtrap. This traditional fishing implement,which the inhabitants of Mljet haveused since time immemorial and whichis still in use <strong>to</strong>day, has become a <strong>to</strong>uristattraction. Today, small fish traps oftenserve a completely different purpose – asstylized hanging lamps in taverns or assouvenirs recalling the heat and beautyof Ulysses’ green Island of Mljet.The fish trap, which has fed and raisedalmost every family from Mljet, ismade entirely of natural materials,namely, myrtle and juniper twigs. Afterthe twigs are picked, they are soakedin water <strong>to</strong> make them pliable, andsorted according <strong>to</strong> length, width andthickness. It takes up <strong>to</strong> 400 twigs <strong>to</strong>weave a fish trap.Although Vicko Lazo has lived in<strong>Dubrovnik</strong> for many years, he stillconstructs fish traps. He learned thetrade from his uncle on the Island ofMljet, where Vicko spent his childhood.Today he usually gives away the fishtraps he has made <strong>to</strong> friends, lovers ofantiquity and tradition, and <strong>to</strong> thosewho respect the trade that has raisedmany generations of Mljet’s childrenand families. By Sandra Lackovićish Trap- Small fish traps are usedfor catching chromis,painted comber, comber,huge forkbeard and lobster.The fishing season starts in midApril, when the good weather begins, andlasts till the Feast of the Assumption. Thenfish traps are lowered <strong>to</strong> the south of Mljet,and, when the weather is bad, they arelowered in<strong>to</strong> the Mljet Channel. Fish trapscan last for up <strong>to</strong> ten years, and fishing withthem is simple. When a small fish swimsinside the fish trap, it becomes bait forbigger and better fish, which is the reasonwhy a thick or wide weave is used for theirconstruction. It sometimes happens that asmany as ten lobsters are caught in a fish trap– says Uncle Vicko.Recalling his childhood, Vicko says that, atthat time, following World War II, it oftenhappened that there was an abundance oflobsters on the dining table, yet the familywere short of, and longing for, bread. Letters from an 18 th century English travel writerBy Nella LonzaThe life of the Rec<strong>to</strong>r of<strong>Dubrovnik</strong>The Rec<strong>to</strong>r of <strong>Dubrovnik</strong>, according <strong>to</strong> the writings of Englishman Thomas Watkins in 1789From the year 1358, the Rec<strong>to</strong>rof <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> was electedfrom amongst the nobility <strong>to</strong>represent and embody the Republic.His term of office – which lasted foronly one month in order <strong>to</strong> preventthe concentration of power in thehands of a single individual, and whichinspired a poet <strong>to</strong> call him „an eveningprimrose in the garden of power“ -attracted the attention of all foreigntravel writers who left records of theCity. They included Thomas Watkinswho visited <strong>Dubrovnik</strong> at the age of28, returning from his travels <strong>to</strong> theEast Mediterranean. A sharp observerof society and delighted with the goodcompany he found in the City, Watkinssent a couple of letters <strong>to</strong> his father,Pennoyre Watkins Esq., describingthe natural beauty, the governmentinstitutions, cus<strong>to</strong>ms, and gave aparticularly vivid account of the Festivalof St Blaise (3 February) he witnessed.His reliable account and agreeablestyle were certainly the reason for thepopularity of his collected letters, whichwere reprinted several times and alsotranslated in<strong>to</strong> foreign languages withina short period.This is a quote from Watkins’ writingson the Rec<strong>to</strong>r:“At the head of the Republic is thePrince, or Rec<strong>to</strong>r, elected by the Senate,whose term of office lasts for only onemonth. The royalinsignia was, in fact, displayed only ifthe Rec<strong>to</strong>r died during his term of office,but the ceremonial red robe and thelavish en<strong>to</strong>urage certainly contributed <strong>to</strong>the majesty of the Rec<strong>to</strong>r’s appearancein public. Certainly the most interestingpart of Watkins’ account is histestimony about the Rec<strong>to</strong>r’s secretsearch for company in the evening.Actually, the law required him <strong>to</strong> stayin the Palace on permanent call for anyreason of state that may occur. However,a very interesting document from 1552discloses that equally important was theidea that his frequent and “<strong>to</strong>o familiar”appearances in public would underminethe authority and magnificence of therec<strong>to</strong>rship.
