Screening CentersN.J.S.A.Title 30:4-27 NJ SCREENING LAW• In 1987 the Screening Law was enacted.• Mandated Screening Centers for every county• <strong>Monmouth</strong> Medical Center was designated as theScreening Center for <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>County</strong>• Provides a system of acute assessment, crisisintervention, screening outreach, and screeningfor involuntary hospitalization– Goal is to protect the rights of patients and promote“least restrictive environment.”3

NJ SCREENING LAW criteriaA person that is mentally ill, , that themental illness causes the person tobe dangerous to self or dangerousto others or property where s/he isunwilling to be admitted to afacility voluntary for care.17


Involuntary Commitment Process• A person is first brought to a screeningservice to be assessed to determine whatmental health services are appropriate.• The individual is examined by a mentalhealth screener who determines if thepatient meets the legal criteria forinvoluntary commitment.• If so, the screener provides a screeningdocument.18


Involuntary Commitment Process• The individual is then examined by apsychiatrist who determines whether or notthe individual meets clinical requirements forcommitment.• If so, the psychiatrist completes thescreening certificate.• Both screener and psychiatrist must agree.19
